Method Man, Ghostface & Raekwon Collabo LP Postponed

posted by xxl staff

The Wu-Massacre has been put on hold. Despite several haunting viral videos promoting the forthcoming Method Man, Ghostface and Raekwon collaborative album for a December 22 release, a rep for the group has confirmed with XXLMag.com that the disc has been pushed back to the top of 2010.

The Wu-Tang album isn’t the only Def Jam release that fans will have to wait to hear. Redman’s seventh solo disc, Reggie Noble 9 ½ has also been rescheduled for early ’10.

All four rappers have released LPs in 2009. Ghostface dropped his R&B tinged project Ghostdini the Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City back in September, Red and Meth reunited for the sequel to 1999’s Blackout! last May and Rae finally delivered his long delayed Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…Pt. II album two months ago.

As of press time there are no concrete release dates for either the untitled Wu project or 9 ½. —Elan Mancini

Talib Kweli & Phife Pay Tribute to De La Soul on New Mixtape

posted by xxl staff

With 2009 marking the 20-year anniversary of De La Soul’s classic debut, 3 Feet High and Rising, DJ Mick Boogie and Terry Urban will be releasing a free mixtape paying homage to the beloved Long Island-bred group tomorrow (November 25).

The project titled, LE DA SOUL: A Tribute to De La Soul, will be presented by clothing company Lemar and Dauley and include cameos from Talib Kweli, Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest, Skillz, Kardinal Offishal, Tanya Morgan and Camp Lo, among others.

“The number of legends who stepped up to be on this tape is insane,” Mick said in a statement. “Phife! Camp Lo! These guys were shapers of the Native Tongue culture and we are honored to have them on here.”

Apparently the mixtape giants did not plan on dropping the tape a day before Thanksgiving, but found the date fitting. “We have been waiting and waiting to get this done and get all the verses in… and they are finally in,” he said. “Ironically, it’s Thanksgiving week. And what better way to give thanks to our favorite group then to release this project.”

Fans can download the project tomorrow at thepressplayshow.com.

AZ Reached Out To Nas For "Doe Or Die 2" Project, Says "I Haven't Gotten Feedback As Of Yet"

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Rap veteran AZ recently hit up SOHH to discuss his relationship with fellow Queens, New York rapper Nas and the possibility of collaborating with him once again.
Click here to find out more!

Known for their time together on The Firm, AZ said Nas has been hard to get in contact with most likely due to his recent publicized hardships.

"I mean, I reached out to him, uhm, I think he's going through a couple of whirls, he's going through a lot of situations so we haven't really sat down and politic'ed and talked about everything," AZ explained. "Actually, I did reach out for this Doe Or Die 2, that's what I'm working on, the Doe Or Die 2 stuff. Raekwon did the Cuban Linx [2], and The Blueprint 3 and the Carter III and IV, so them sequels do good in the marketplace. So I'm trying to do this Doe Or Die 2, I reached out to him, I haven't gotten feedback as of yet, but like I said, look at what he's going through." (SOHH)

Nas made headlines last month when his tax problems landed online.

Kelis isn't the only person trying to get money from Nas -- turns out Uncle Sam is too! TMZ has obtained a federal tax lien filed last month against Nas for a whopping $2,584,206.31. Looks like Nas didn't pay his taxes in 2006 and 2007. Nas is currently involved in a bitter divorce battle with Kelis. Looks like she'll have to wait in line. (TMZ)

A judge ruled against Nas over the summer and said he would have to pay over $40,000 to Kelis in spousal and child support expenses.

A day after welcoming a baby boy, the "Milkshake" singer, 29, was awarded nearly $44,000 in monthly support from her ex Nas at a hearing. He initially asked a court to deny Kelis any spousal support and then proposed paying Kelis a one-time payment of $20,000 until the judge could settle on an appropriate spousal and child support amount at a later hearing. But on Thursday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Louis Meisinger rejected the offer, stating that new mom Kelis needed more money per month to accommodate her new lifestyle. (Us Magazine)

AZ shares over a decade of musical history with Nas.

In the wake of his debut Doe or Die's critical success, AZ collaborated with Nas in the ill-fated supergroup the Firm and released Pieces of a Man (1998), another critical favorite. But for the most part, that was it from AZ for several years as he fell by the wayside, not surfacing in a big way again until a pair of Motown releases, 9 Lives (2001) and Aziatic (2002), that didn't sell any better than his previous efforts. He subsequently took his music underground, periodically releasing albums such as A.W.O.L. (2005). (All Music)

No further details on Doe Or Die 2 have been released as of now.

Jadakiss Talks Ruff Ryders Movement, "It's Like A New Beginning"

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

The Lox's Jadakiss recently discussed his role in Ruff Ryders reunion and revealed that rap elite like the late Biggie Smalls and Eminem have co-signed his emcee skills.
Click here to find out more!

According to Jada, the Ryders long-awaited reunion is just a matter of getting his crew together in the studio.

"You know, the Ryders is pure talent around the board," Jada said about his team of emcees which includes DMX, Eve and Swizz Beatz. "It's just a matter of linking up and putting it together. I had to be the engine, you know what I mean, with this Last Kiss album, get back in the door, get my elbows, get my elbow space and pull everybody out. DMX is back out of the trouble again. I feel fresh, it's like a new beginning. Five years off [and] to have a first-week like I had, you know, the response is great. The people are still feeling the kid and that's all it's about...I was told I was nice from [Big] Pun, Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem." (Parker Vision)

Swizz Beatz previously talked about re-sparking the Ruff Ryders through working with X and Eve.

"I'm about to drop this joint that was supposed to be DMX and Jadakiss, but it's gonna be DMX and Eve," Swizz said in an interview. "I want people to hear Eve in that hard element again. X is on his A-game. They're in trouble. Just the lineup of music I have already done, ignorant! X is gonna come back so crazy. They are both on the way...I paused up on my album sh*t...I'm on a different level of expressing myself. I'd rather express musically than lyrically. But any minute, I can go in the studio and jump on some sh*t I made for somebody else and not wanna give it to them." (MTV)

Last summer, Jada confirmed the movement would be in full effect for 2009.

"We got the Ruff Ryder, D-Block remix out," Kiss explained as he and Swizz Beatz pulled out trademark Ruff Ryder bandannas in an interview last May. "We got [DMX] on there. X on there, Eve, Drag On, Styles P, Sheek Louch, we bringing it back. We bringing it back to that element baby! ... And yeah, yeah, the Big Bosses tour, me and my big homie Cam'ron coming to a venue near you real soon...Catalog is crazy right now. We got Lox album coming, Ruff Ryder compilation, new Sheek album, new Swizz album, new Kiss album. We gettin' it poppin' baby! ("106 & Park")

Their reunion "Who's Real (Remix)" music video landed online earlier this year.

Originally a Jadakiss solo hit (produced by Swizz Beatz) from his most recent album The Last Kiss, the song's remix and accompanying video reunite the entire Ruff Ryders crew, Jadakiss, Swizz, DMX, Styles P, Sheek Louch, Drag-On, Eve and Murda Mook. The video's concept, overseen by Ruff Ryders co-founder and CEO Joaquin "Waah" Dean, pays homage to the collective street spirit the Ruff Ryders pioneered in the late 1990s. The video was shot in different locations, with DMX and Swizz on set in Arizona due to X's current travel restrictions, and the rest of the crew filmed in New York City. (Dr Jay's)

M-Eighty Will Attempt To Break Freestyle Record

by Danielle Harling

On December 19, rapper and Wu-Tang affiliate M-Eighty will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Record’s record for longest freestyle.

The current Guinness record is 8 hours and 45 minutes and was set by Canadian rapper D.O. years ago.

“I don’t think it was ever a question of whether I could freestyle for x amount of time; I believe you can do anything you set your mind to,” M-Eighty said in a statement. “I chose to take on this obstacle because at the end of the day I am providing a great service to others and doing something life altering for an entire community in the name of education.”

Aside from hopefully breaking the Guinness record, M-Eighty hopes the event will also raise money for the construction of a secondary school in Africa. To raise money, M-Eighty has teamed up with both the International Studies Program at Indiana University/Purdue University-Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the Timmy Foundation. Together their goal is to raise $30,000.

M-Eighty’s attempt to break the current record will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana and the event will be open to the public.

Busta Rhymes To Release Chemo in 2010

by Andres Tardio

Busta Rhymes, who has had fans patiently waiting for his new album, has decided to drop The Chemo. In an interview with Billboard.com, the emcee spoke on the album, the title, and why the industry may need his help to recover.

"I called the album 'The Chemo' because it seems like the industry and music overall is dying slowly," he said. "The cancer that's stricken the business is killing the music, not only from a business standpoint, but also the value of the content and the creativity behind it. I just want to start the first stage of chemotherapy treatment that needs to take place and hopefully inspire others to do their part and contribute to different stages of the cure," he noted.

Rhymes also added that he was pleased to see fellow artists like Jay-Z, Drake and Jadakiss release note worthy albums in 2009.

Earlier this year, Busta added more on the meaning behind the title of his new album through his blog.

"We're coming to kill the cancer in music. I ain't trying to offend anybody... We gotta re-establish the understanding that the perspective of Hip Hop is to make music that always felt undeniable and unprecedented and we set a standard. And we always made sure we supplied the demand of being the ultimate cutting-edge form of entertainment that we always have and will always be. We always did a good job at doing that," he said when letting fans know of the album title.

Chris Brown, Diddy and Wyclef are all set to be guest stars on the album. In a recent entry in his blog, Busta let fans know that they can send beats in to be featured on the album, also.

His album, The Chemo will be released on Flipmode/Universal Motown in the first quarter of 2010.

Eminem To Re-Release Relapse With 5 New Tracks

by Slava Kuperstein

Although he had initially planned for a fourth quarter release for Relapse 2, Eminem has now altered his plans and will instead re-issue Relapse with seven bonus tracks.

According to the rapper's homepage, the re-release of Slim Shady's fifth solo effort will be titled Relapse: Refill, and will feature five never-before-heard songs, plus his posse cut with Drake, Lil Wayne and Kanye, "Forever," and "Taking My Ball," which also appeared on the "Renegade" edition of DJ Hero.

"I want to deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned" said Eminem. "Hopefully these tracks on The Refill will tide the fans over until we put out Relapse 2 next year".

Eminem elaborated on his recording process for Relapse 2, indicating that the creative process has taken longer than he anticipated. "I got back in with Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch. The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on Relapse 2, but I still want the other stuff to be heard."

There is no current release date set for Relapse 2. Relapse: Refill hits stores December 21.

Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Secures $10 Mil In Funding

By Nolan Strong

Representatives for the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame have announced they have secured $10 million dollars in funding for the new, Manhattan-based project.

The Hip-Hop Hall of Fame will feature artifacts from Hip-Hop’s rich history, exhibits, workshops and community outreach programs with the pioneers of rap, many of whom are on the museum's advisory board.

The Hip-Hop Hall of Fame was originally created in 1992 as an award show that aired on BET in 1995.

The concept was created by JT “J-Train” Thompson, a Brooklyn born Queens/Harlem raised Hip-Hop entrepreneur.

"After 26 months of talks and negotiations, that yielded a few false starts and stops along the way, has come to a suitable arrangement by matching funds that may be increased," said J.T. Thompson, the chairman and creator of the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.

"We wanted to give the fans and the lovers of Hip Hop around the world an opportunity to give to the 'museum cause' and to have a 'pride of ownership stake and voice' in what we do at the HHHOF Museum Complex and in the communities we serve,” Thompson continued. “We have been often imitated but will never be duplicated, as Hip-Hop legends have paved the way, and our goal is to expand the culture, with 'barrier breaking' leadership and development internationally well into the 21st century.”

Members of the Museums Advisory Board include Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, Kool Herc and a number of other Hip-Hop pioneers.

The Hip-Hop Hall of Fame Museum and Entertainment Complex slated to open in New York City in late 2010.

Canibus Goes After Em On Scathing Diss 'Air Strike'

By Nolan Strong

Rapper Canibus released a new diss track today (November 23) aimed at Eminem.

The track, titled “Air Strike (Pop Killer),” was released on Warlab Records and features Canibus and label mate DZK airing out Eminem over a number of issues.

Canibus and DZK insult Eminem on the 5:32 second track, making fun of his feud with Mariah Carey, in addition to Eminem’s addiction to pain killers and his troubled past with his parents.

Right before Canibus’ verse starts, he taunts Eminem with a clip of his own words in regards to rap battles.

“If you’re an MC and you mention my name in the wrong way, you draw first blood, I’m gonna come back,” Eminem says in a sample, taken from an interview with Tim Westwood in 2002.

“You aint know Hip-Hop messiah/You a b***h cause you dissed Mariah/s**tlike that is supposed to be private/I’ma fry you on behalf of Mariah and Michael/Put you back on the drugs, make you suicidal," Canibus raps.

The disrespectful lines get worse as the track moves on, referencing the infamous incident in which actor Sacha Baron Cohen’s bare bottom landed in Eminem’s face at the MTV Music Awards in May.

According to Eminem his beef with Canibus started in 1998, before he was signed to a record label.

During in interview with Tim Westwood, Eminem explained the beef started after LL Cool J released his track “The Ripper Strikes Back,” a response to Canibus’ diss record “Second Round K.O.”

Originally, Canibus and producer Wyclef believed that Eminem wrote the lyrics to the track for LL Cool J, an allegation Eminem denied.

Despite Canibus’ attempt to squash the beef, Eminem continued to diss him in interviews and on his 2002 album, The Eminem Show.

On a track titled “Square Dance,” he referred to Canibus as “Canib**ch.”

“Let’s see you Square Dance now/Let’s see you hold your bladder,” DZK raps. “Let’s see you fire back Em/where’s the fire at/it’s suicide hotline time/go dial that/put on that ‘8 Mile’ hat and a file track/Get at some people who can actually diss you back.”

Triple C’s Attack KRS-One, New Boyz

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Rick Ross affiliates Triple C’s have taken aim at legend KRS-One and the New Boyz in response to what they deem are hypocritical critiques of their style of Hip-Hop.

In a recent interview for rollingout.com, the 3 man group resurrected the 3 year old debate Nas coined with his 2006 Hip-Hop Is Dead LP, and launched criticism at KRS-One in spite of the Bronx veteran dropping an album in early 2007 entitled Hip-Hop Lives.

For them, Hip-Hop’s health is based on the fact there is still money being made, and not the stance of some fans and critics that the genre has seen a downward spiral due to the lack of creativity from certain artists.

“You notice it’s the people that always say ‘Hip-Hop is dead,’ they ain’t got no money,” argued Torch. “And to top it all off, it’s like Hip-Hop is dead but when they had their run, the same people that say these things, they be in pictures with AK’s, they forgot all that now. You need to do your track record, do your homework and the record that people are pointing their fingers, you gotta realize, every time you point your finger, the other four are pointing right back at you. You gotta understand what’s going on. So at the end of the day, I ain’t with the finger pointing and the other four pointing back at you, but at the end of the day, music is music. You stay in your genre of music whether its backpack, dancing, and let us stay in ours. We make real music.”

To accentuate Torch’s point, rapper Gunplay dismissively shouted out Boogie Down Productions’ landmark debut Criminal Minded while a picture of BDP’s politically charged and Malcolm X-inspired cover for By All Means Necessary flashed on screen.

Triple C’s then turned their attention to teen group the New Boyz, implying the duo were gay due to their choice of clothing.

“We don’t knock nobody’s hustle because we don’t want anyone to knock ours, because we might knock your head off,” stated Breed. “If your jeans tighter than my b***h’s, hey, we’re not knocking your alternative lifestyle. It’s on you if you want to wear sparkling beat chains. But don’t [criticize] when we talk about our sticks, bricks, when we’re doing our thing because we’re going to feed the streets regardless. We talk about what we know.”

Triple C’s debut album Custom Cars & Cycles was released on October 27.

Dre Confirms 'Detox' Appearances From 50 And Game

By Nolan Strong

Producer Dr. Dre has confirmed that rivals 50 Cent and Game will make cameo appearances on his often delayed album Detox.

Dre made the revelation during a press conference for his Beats by Dre headphone line at Best Buy’s Union Square location in New York on Thursday (November 19).

A reporter for RapRadar.com queried the producer on the feud between the two artists, who are affiliated with his Aftermath imprint.

“Everything is good. Both guys are gonna be on my record,” Dr. Dre revealed. “And you know, I’m just trying to put it back where it’s supposed to be, all love.”

When asked about the release date of Detox, Dr. Dre could offer no solid date.

“The minute it’s done and it feels right to me, that’s when it’ll come out. Hopefully in the beginning of the year,” Dre said.

Dre’s headphone line is a partnership with Interscope and Monster Cable and Best Buy.

Best Buy will set up custom “Club Beat” areas in 300 stores to sell the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones in addition to DJ equipment, mixers, turntables, laptops and other gear.

While the Game and 50 cent may make cameo appearances on Detox, the cold war of words between the two rappers rages on.

In a recent interview with MTV.com, 50 Cent proclaimed that he would never work with Game under any circumstances.

“I wouldn't do it,” 50 Cent told MTV.com. “I'd be on a record, on a song, on the [Detox] album, but not on that record [with Game].”

The Game replied to 50’s comments in an interview with Complex Magazine. Although he had unflattering words for his rival, Game said he would consider working with 50 Cent in the future.

“I mean, I don’t know what 50’s problem is but I’m here,” Game told Complex.com. “Whenever he wants to call me on the phone and talk about it, squash it or we can keep on going with this f**king child like antics. He can do it, I can do it and we can do it ’til we f**kin’ die, it makes me no difference, man.”

Beanie Drops New Diss 'How I Could Kill Jigga Man'

By Nolan Strong

Philadelphia DJ Cosmic Kev debuted two brand new tracks by rapper Beanie Sigel tonight (November 21st) during his radio show on Power 99 FM.

“Back down Jigga/put my nuts on that n**as neck,” Sigel raps on the first, unnamed track.

While the first rap only contains one line about Jay-Z, the second track is sure to raise eye brows.

On the second track, Sigel issued another harsh freestyle aimed at Jay-Z, this time dropping a verse over Cypress Hill’s hit “How I Could Just Kill a Man” renaming the song “How I Could Kill Jigga Man.”

Sigel’s opening lines make use of Jay-Z’s signature battle song “Takeover,” which was originally a diss record to Jay-Z’s old nemesis, Nas and Mobb Deep.

“Take over/n***a the breaks over/fraud emcee/he Jay Hova/,” Sigel starts his verse. “Hey little soldier you aint ready for the rude boy/quick to pull the tool boy.”

“You aint gonna say nothing boy?” Sigel says at the end of the song taunting Jay-Z. “Damn, I thought you was the boy, boy. You aint nothing but a boy, boy boy. I aint gonna stop boy.”

The debut of the freestyle marks the end of a busy week for Sigel, who has been dissing his former ally, Jay Z, in various internet clips and interviews.

Next week Sigel will grace the cover of Hip-Hop Weekly. In the interview Sigel continues to air out Jay-Z, as well as his former business dealings with the former Roc-A-Fella CEO.

In the Hip-Hop Weekly interview Sigel continues to hurl insults at Jay-Z, stating that the rapper is not “a camel but he is a snake.”

Sigel also claims in the interview that Jay-Z blocked collaborations with other superstar rappers, further hindering his career.

“When I listened to Blueprint 3 it really hurt me to hear the subliminal shot on the album that Jay was taking at me, Peedi, and everyone at State Property,” Sigel said in the interview with Hip-Hop Weekly.

Beanie Sigel is currently working on an untitled album, which he says will delve into his issues with Jay Z.

Sigel is currently in negotiations to sign a deal with Jay-Z’s rival 50 Cent, who appeared on Sigel’s last single “I Go Off.”

At present time it is still unclear if Sigel’s album will be released on 50 Cent G-Unit imprint.

KRS-One to Feed Thousands in New York

By Nolan Strong

Hip-Hop legend KRS-One will give back to New York this holiday, when he will help feed thousands of homeless people.

KRS-One, who was once homeless himself, will return to the Bowery Mission this Thanksgiving (November 26), to feed meals to over three thousands of the city's homeless.

The rapper, who once stayed at the very mission where he will serve meals, will appear at the Bowery Mission on Thanksgiving, from 8:00am until 7:00pm.

“I am participating in the Bowery Mission Thanksgiving Food Drive and Event because I myself was once homeless, walking these very streets, spending time with these wonderful people at the Bowery Mission," KRS One told AllHipHop.com in a statement." I depended on them to survive. I am showing up for Thanksgiving this year to not only lend a hand, but hope that I may inspire others in the Hip-Hop community to consider their roles towards helping the homeless and join me by helping those in your community that need help during this holiday season."

KRS-One recently released his second book, Gospel of Hip-Hop: First Instrument.

The 800-page book combines philosophy and faith along with knowledge and spirituality for people who participate in Hip-Hop culture.

The Bowery Mission serves New York’s homeless 365 days a year, 7 days a week, since 1879.

In addition to shelter, the organization offers doctors appointments and recovery and job assistance programs.

Drake Eyes Big Features For "Thank Me Later" LP, "I Really Wanna Get Andre 3000"

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Drake recently discussed his forthcoming Thank Me Later debut album and what artists he has eyed down for collaborations including renowned singer Sade and OutKast's Andre 3000.

Drizzy says he is looking beyond a typical "hip-hop" sound for his debut.

"I really, really wanna do a joint with Sade," he revealed in an interview. "I really wanna get Andre 3000 on the record. And I really wanna do a song with Kings of Leon. Yeah, slowly, but surely [I'm trying to get the guest features]. We'll see." (Rap-Up)

Drake's producer, Omen, recently revealed an upcoming collaboration track with the rapper and The-Dream.

"We're filming a video for it soon helmed by Hype Williams. The track will be serviced just a few weeks after," Omen revealed. The song came about when Omen teamed up with Drake's longtime musical collaborator, 40, and together they came up with the production. "I was working on some drum patterns and 40 had the melody going. 40 is very skilled and has a crazy ear for obscure sounds and chords," says Omen. "It took us the whole night to come up with the track, but we finished it and played it for Drake the next day, who already had the song's concept." The idea for the track, which Omen describes as a "Prince-like, powerful song," is about "empowering females. Drake said he had a song idea called 'Shut It Down' aimed at club-going females. When they go out and they get dressed up and put their makeup on and get their hair done, they have the capacity to shut the club down," Omen recalls. (Billboard)

Drake recently touched on the importance of lyricism on his debut album.

"Lyrically, I want to keep the album as genuine and honest as 'Fear' is, but musically there will be a little more energy," he promised. "There will be more moments of triumph, because my life is the best it's ever been in my 22 years of existence. I want my music to reflect that, but I still want to be able to relate and connect with people. It's a good indication. There will obviously be some variation -- not every track is going to sound like that. I was actually going to save 'Fear' for the album, but I wanted to give people another reason to buy the [So Far Gone] EP" (Shock Hound)

Aside from music, the Canadian-based emcee will reportedly grace the new VIBE Magazine re-launch issue next month.

The cover with Chris Brown actually shares the print run with covers featuring Drake, another hip-hop artist. But it's the Chris Brown cover that's more likely to get people talking. Now the print edition is coming back with a reduced frequency, four issues next year compared with the 10 once planned for 2009, and a smaller paid circulation guarantee, 300,000 now compared to 600,000 at shutdown. That partly reflects the tough economy. It's a result, too, of abandoning all subscribers to the old Vibe, who now have to buy new subscriptions if they want the new print edition; InterMedia didn't take on liability for prior subscribers when it bought Vibe's assets. The return issue, out Dec. 8 in a slightly over-sized format, is expected to include more than 40 pages of advertising. (Ad Age)

Thank Me Later is slated to land in stores February 2010.

Dame Dash Says Lyor Cohen Influenced "Roc" Collapse, "He's A Mastermind"

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon "Dame" Dash recently spoke on seeing his former record label collapse and said he still maintains "love" for his ex-associates including Jay-Z and Kanye West.

Dame also suggested former Def Jam president, Lyor Cohen, influenced the company's 2005 break-up.

"I'm very disappointed where Roc-A-Fella went," Dame explained in an interview. "I'm very disappointed, it's like the brand is compromised. I never thought that could ever happen where Roc-A-Fella is just not relevant. Lyor is a funny dude, he's a mastermind. He's not scared, I think his influences are what broke up Roc-A-Fella. It's just all business man and even though I'm not running it no more, you still don't wanna see something go down. It feels good but it feels bad, it's bittersweet. It's hard. I got love for everybody, really. But sometimes people do things that are uncharacteristic of what I thought they were. I wish [Beanie Sigel] could have done a little more. I'm surprised at that certain position he took. But you know, he's a man and he's gotta do what he's gotta do...Kanye is a funny cat to me, I can never know whether he's acting or not...The Kanye I see on television isn't the Kanye that I know -- but I always will admire his hustle, his work ethic..." (Mixtape Monster)

Lyor, now an executive at Warner Music Group, was reportedly a deciding factor in Jay-Z's decision to release his number one album, Blueprint 3, through the company.

"Jay knows Lyor and Kevin [Liles] from back when they all worked together at Def Jam, and he obviously wants to work something out with his friends," says our insider. "He wants to get the dream team back together. There have been a few whiffs of a reunion in the past, but only now - and very privately - is something finally starting to happen...This is big in hip hop. These are three of the most powerful men in music, who might be working together, and there's no question the success they'll have as a team will be huge." (New York Daily News)

Dame recently weighed in on seeing Jay and Beans having their issues publicized.

"I love Jay, I love Beans -- what's the reason for beef?" Dash responded in an interview. "That's stupid. What's the reason for beef? People die, people don't feel good -- I want people to laugh...I was hurt for him, more or less, because I know that ain't him. But I don't want to speak on that. Whatever [Beanie's] going through where he's got to do that...I could understand where he may look at things and feel that way. I can see that. He's probably got a lot of people around him and nobody to really tell him what's going on. It was a different environment for Roc-A-Fella back then. I feel bad for those cats. I love those cats. I hate that they struggle. I hate it. I hate to see anybody struggle. I don't embrace that. I'm not one of those dudes that get happy when I hear something bad about somebody I had a bond with. I really loved those dudes." (MTV)

He also announced plans to launch a new Internet radio station earlier this year.

"I think it's gonna launch in a couple weeks and it's just really for good music," he revealed in a September interview. "It's not about getting money or all the ads, or things like that, it's really about giving people a platform to hear good music...I think the whole world is getting ready to turn for that. It feels like good music is gonna take the forefront and people with a good show. I think that's the good business model." (XXL Mag)

Duck Down Releases 2005 "Triple Threat" Box Set

Diehard Boot Camp Clik and Duck Down Records fans recognize 2005 as a benchmark year for the veteran New York imprint. While releases like Black Moon's 1993 Enta Da Stage and Smif N Wessun's 1995 Dah Shinin' set the stage for the Boot Camp Clik's '90s brand, 2005 found success in three releases that would direct the label to its recent glory.

These albums partnered the Brooklyn collective with southern, Justus League production, led by 9th Wonder and helped form a restored identity for Sean Price as he switched names and went solo for a period. The critical and commercial success of all three releases helped Duck Down expand into the latter half of this decade.

Sean Price's Monkey Barz, Buckshot & 9th Wonder's Chemistry and Smif N' Wessun's Reloaded will be packaged together, and released as "Triple Threat" November 24.

The three releases will don a new CD jacket, created by Marc Ecko, and sold for the price of one album.

2009 Duck Down releases have included albums from Torae & Marco Polo, Skyzoo, B-Real and Buckshot & KRS-One.

9th Wonder Launches "Bethune Project" In Support of Small NC College

By Tai Saint Louis

Producer 9th Wonder has been recruited by a small North Carolina college to create a new program aimed to revitalize the school’s low enrollment.

The board of trustees at Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina has asked the renowned producer to develop the 9th Wonder Center for Music Studies and Entrepreneurial Studies, he told AllHipHop.com exclusively.

Founded as a women’s seminary tied to the Presbyterian Church in 1867, Barber-Scotia College is a Historically Black College, which has always had enrollment numbers under a thousand students.

Among the school’s alumni is Dr. Mary McCleod Bethune, who would go on to found what is now Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida, and serve as adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Since losing its accreditation in 2004, the now co-ed Barber-Scotia College’s enrollment is at an all-time low of just 20 students. The 9th Wonder Center is just one of many projects the school has recently revealed as it prepares to be recognized for accreditation candidacy in April 2010.

In May, the school also announced the creation of the Faithful Promise campaign, whose honorary chairperson is R&B singer Monica. The campaign’s goal is to raise $10 million by June 30, 2011 to fund scholarships, support operational costs and repay the school’s past debts.

“As the main facilitator for the Center for Music and Entrepreneurial Studies, I’ll be overseeing all aspects of the project,” 9th explained to AllHipHop.com.

Among his duties are the development of courses and programs of study, as well as the selection of the faculty and administration who will be involved.

“I’m in the process right now of asking some of my closest friend in academia to help me do this,” he added. “I’m calling my project The Bethune Project. I wanna come in and try to bring more students to that school. So I’m basically rebuilding a college. It feels like 1899.”

Once completed, the Center will offer courses in Music Technology, Music Ethnology and History of Black Music in a social context. While he develops the new Center, 9th Wonder will be pulling double duty as a professor.

Starting in Spring 2010, he will be teaching Hip-Hop in Context and History at Barber-Scotia. Having also just recently become an adjunct professor at Duke University, 9th has developed a course with Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, professor of Black Popular Culture in the department of African and African-American Studies at the University.

The two will be teaching a new course called “Sampling Soul,” which explores Soul Music from the 1950s to the present, while exploring how the music was shaped by Black culture and vice versa.

Is Redman Taking On Auto-Tune Or Is It Reggie Noble?

Auto-tune has come under some harsh criticism in hip-hop. T-Pain is a big fan of auto-tune but in Jay-Z's song titled D.O.A. (Death of Autotune), Jigga wrote that he will never join the bandwagon of this new trend. Redman has jumped on the bandwagon of auto-tune or is it his alter-ego Reggie Noble?

The Brick City rapper is preparing his new album Reggie Noble 9 1/2 that is set for release in December. He told Rap-Up.com that Reggie will use auto-tune and that he "don't give a f*ck."

"Reggie Noble don't give a f*ck! He wanna do auto-tune," Redman said. "He wants to do a pop record. He just wants to do music because he loves music."

"Reggie Noble is doing the album, not Redman. Let's get that clear," the rapper added.

During the interview Redman had explained that he and Reggie are totally different. Redman continues that Reggie Noble wants to do auto-tune just for fun.

"What's the difference between Reggie Noble and Redman is that this Reggie Noble album is more conceptual," the rapper explained. "It got concepts on it, it got auto-tune on it, it got a pop record on it. I had fun on it. I'm just throwing it out, giving it to Def Jam."

Redman will release another album not Reggie Noble called Muddy Waters which will be released sometime next year on Def Jam. This is his sequel to his Muddy Water LP that premiered in 1996.

Bekay's "Blood Sport"

DJ Kay Slay Talks Papoose Debut Album Delay, "There [Were] Creative Control Conflicts"

Written by Cyrus Langhorne
Known for helping land Papoose a $1.5 million recording contract with Jive Records in 2006, New York's DJ Kay Slay recently said record label conflicts have caused the rapper's long-awaited debut album delay.

According to Slay, fans should still anticipate the project coming in 2010.

"You're all going to hear something next year," Slay promised in an interview. "We have way more than enough songs; we just haven't found the right situation. We thought we had the right situation, but there were stupid motherf*ckas in positions that didn't know how to work with an artist like that -- so there [were] creative control conflicts, because I was like, 'We ain't doing that! This ain't why y'all brought us up here.' You see, that's what happens: When they get you, then you have some other n*ggas with some big-brained scheme, and then I'll ask a motherf*cker, 'When is the last time you been to Brooklyn? What record is Papoose most known for? Where's he performing at this week?' They don't know nothing about him, but they have all these d*ckhead ideas... And that's the reason why sh*t wasn't working." (iHipHop)

Kay Slay recently said he felt the current record label giants were catering more toward a Southern fanbase and big name artists which would bypass Pap.

"He's grindin', you know, he's just putting everything back in order," Slay said about Papoose. "He's in a different frame of mind now. We recorded a whole lot of records. Putting an album out ain't a problem, it's about putting an album out through a right situation. I think [Papoose would] rather [prefer] an independent than a major. It really don't make no sense to do a major in this time in age...Papoose would do better on an independent right now because majors are really geared towards Southern artists or high profile artists that's been known for selling records. They don't wanna gamble too much with no new artists." (XXL Mag)

Papoose previously said he would no longer blame his album delay on the record labels.

"I just been taking care of every day life," Pap explained in an interview. "I've been putting in that work, laying in the cut, making the right decisions...I'm coming with my album, The Nacirema Dream next year. I'm not sitting around like these n*ggas is doing and crying about these labels and all that. I got a master plan I'm about to put into effect next year, so n*ggas is gonna really see how it's gonna go down with my album. You like it or love it, if you f*ck with me, cop it. And to keep it real with you, the feedback I get from the haters, the people that don't like me, the only thing they say is 'Yo, the n*gga ain't dropped the album yet.' So what they gonna say when I drop it, man? So next year, the album coming. I've been working." (Hip Hop Beef)

He also confirmed his debut album was still on deck despite multiple delays earlier this fall.

"Right now my aim is bigger," Pap said in an interview. "What I got in the works right now is going to shake the ground when it drops. What I'm about to do I feel like nobody is doing right now. I really don't give too much details about it right now, but the announcement will be made real soon. I'm about to make a real power move. I'm coming for you n*ggas, so I hope you're prepared for it. The Nacirema Dream album is coming properly. The fans are going to be proud. I hear the fans complaining, they're always saying, 'Yo, when you going to drop the album?' But I appreciate you waiting for me man. The fans know I'm not an idiot and everything is strategic so that announcement is coming real soon... A lot of people go to Koch and Babygrande and all that, but they're not doing it how I'm about to do it. When I make this move they're going to respect it." (Hip Hop DX)

Cosby Contributors Respond To Simmons

Recently Def Jam co-founder and entrepreneur Russell Simmons spoke out about Bill Cosby's involvement in critiquing the urban youth, most notably on his album State of Emergency, citing Cosby's generational difference as a conflict that has hindered his perception.

Defending Cosby, State of Emergency contributing rapper Supa Nova Slom explained in a statement, "I respect Russell Simmons for all of his contributions to Hip Hop culture but I hope that people do not get distracted and lost in his critiques of Cosby's past comments but instead they are able to acknowledge what Cosby is doing RIGHT NOW!"

Offering the idea of seeing Simmons and Cosby in a public forum to discuss their disagreements, Slom continued, "Cosby is taking a whole other route by investing in politically-charged Hip Hop that does not condemn but instead inspires and uplifts during a time when there is next to none of that happening in the music industry."

Jace The Great, another contributing artist to State of Emergency, offered his own take on the situation. "Point blank the problem right now is there is a state of emergency in our communities and we need to act fast. Cosby knowing the power and importance of Hip Hop culture is using it as a means to reach more youth not to condemn them."

Specifically, Young Jeezy revealed the group's plans via press release. “This album is not about just laying down another compilation of different lyrical creativity, but more about letting the streets know that USDA is still united strong and fierce in that same branded Corporate Thuggin Way.”

The album, which features original members Jeezy, Slick Pulla and Blood Raw, also enlists the help of new members Boo Rossini, 211 and JW.

The new album picks up where the group's 2007 effort, Cold Summer , left off. It will also reportedly be preceeded by Jeezy's fourth album, Thug Motivation 103.

Rap Group Calle 13 Dominates Latin Grammys

Hip-Hop’s universal appeal stood tall recently as Puerto Rican rap duo Calle 13 emerged as the big winner at this year’s Latin Grammy Awards.

The group, comprised of rappers Rene "Residente" Perez and his half brother Eduardo "Visitante" Cabra, collected five Grammys for album of the year and best urban album of the year.

The group’s release Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo won record of the year.

Calle 13 also earned best alternative song for their collaboration with Mexican rockers Cafe Tacuba, aka Cafe Tacvba for "No Hay Nadie Como Tú” and best short form music video for "La Perla."

Upon accepting the award for album of the year, Residente took time out to dedicate the award to popular folk singer/activist Mercedes Sosa.

The veteran entertainer died in October at age 74. "May she rest in peace. An applause for Mercedes Sosa, please," Residente said.

Prior to her death, Sosa was known as a co-founder of the Nueva Cancion movement, an effort developed in the 1950s and 1960s that combined elements of traditional Latin folk music with popular rock music and lyrics pertaining to leftist politics.

Residente continued to show his appreciation for Sosa as he shared how her activism provided inspiration for those who would come after her.

"She is a voice who should never die, and young people should listen to her," the rapper said. "In an era of dictatorship and difficult times, she wasn't afraid. That's why I dedicated it to her."

Sosa’s presence was felt throughout the Latin Grammys as the Latin Recording Academy also paid homage to veteran Argentine entertainer with a brief video segment introduced by salsa icon Ruben Blades.

Other performers included Alejandro Sanz and Alicia Keys, who joined forces for "Looking for Paradise;" La Quinta Estacion member Natalia Jimenez, who sang "Me Dueles;" Oscar D'Leon and Puerto Rican Gilberto Santa Rosa, who treated the audience to a salsa jam with showgirls; and Los Tucanes de Tijuana, who performed “Se Fue Mi Amor," a winner for best regional Mexican song.

Best female pop vocal album winner Laura Pausini opened the Latin Grammys with "En Cambio No." Despite a string of memorable performances, the show, hosted by Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez and Mexican singer and actress Lucero, ran late.

The delay resulted from Mexico's "Divo of Juarez," Juan Gabriel singing for 40 minutes straight.

The vocalist, who received the Latin Recording Academy's person of the year award, was scheduled to perform three of his hit songs, but continued singing as he interacted with amused audience members.
