Royce Da 5'9" Says Slaughterhouse/Shady Deal Is About A Week From Being Final

by Rashad Phillips

During an interview with the On Air Idiots of Hartford's WZMX "Hot" 93.7 Tuesday, Royce Da 5'9" confirmed Slaughterhouse will be signing with Eminem's Shady imprint.

"The whole status with the Slaughterhouse/Shady situation is that it's pretty much done," Royce explained to K-Dubasis and DJ Biggmann. "We're gonna make an official announcement and probably have a few release parties."

Royce added that there were "one or two little things" holding the deal up, but that the partnership would be official within about a week.

"I inquired about it. I sat down with [Eminem's manager] Paul [Rosengerg] and had a good conversation with him," he added. "It just so happened that at the same time, Em had already been listening to the album. For Em, once something gets on his radar, that's it. If he decides he's gonna pull the trigger on it, he's gonna pull the trigger on it."

The signing has been rumored since Slaughterhouse appeared with Eminem in the "Forever" video, and finalizes a reunion of sorts for one-time "Bad Meets Evil" collaborators Eminem and Royce.

In addition to the Slaughterhouse deal, both emcees will be busy on solo projects. Royce plans to release the third installment of his Bar Exam series on May 31, while Eminem's Recovery is slated for a June 22 release.

"I always try and change it up," Royce says of Bar Exam 3. "There was a transition between number one and number two, and it's gonna be another transition. I'm trying a lot of different stuff on there. I'm rhyming like crazy; everybody knows I can do that. But I'm doing some interesting stuff on there."

Each One Counts Foundation Not Registered To Guru

by Salima Koroma

While the death of Hip Hop veteran Guru has left fans in mourning, the string of controversies surrounding the rapper's death continues to grow by the day. Guru's producer Solar told MTV's Sway last week that he and Guru founded the Each One Counts charity organization together, however, certain aspects of the foundation do not add up.

In a final letter, Guru states, "I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life."

Since the letter was released, blogs, media outlets, and fans alike have questioned the authenticity of the address, suggesting that perhaps the letter was written by Solar. According to an investigation conducted by BirthplaceMag.com, who looked at Each One Counts' tax records, the foundation is listed under a Denise Sandoval, or as revealed today, Solar's wife.

Last week, the website spoke to a friend of Solar and Guru, who stated, "The foundation is something Solar started. Guru was aware of the foundation, but nothing was ever done with it. It was something Solar always wanted to get going but never did." It was also revealed that the non-profit earned less than $25,000 a year, yet never filed the proper tax documents.

More on this story as it develops.

Group Home, Jeru Da Damaja Perform In Brooklyn

by Jake Paine

This Thursday in Williamburg, Brooklyn, an event called The Heavy Sound is set to take place at the Warsaw venue. Although the Ghostface Killah-headlined event is also joined by Brand Nubian's Grand Puba, it should be noted that the Warsaw stage will be taken by three former members of the Gang Starr Foundation.

With Keith "Guru" Elam losing a battle with cancer a week ago today, this event marks the first public appearance by two of his former proteges. Brooklyn emcees Jeru Da Damaja, Lil Dap and Melachi The Nutcracker (Group Home) worked by both members of Gang Starr, Guru and DJ Premier on several of the duo's albums. Additionally, Guru and Premier worked extensively on The Sun Rises In The East and Wrath of The Math by Jeru and Livin' Proof by Group Home.

None of the three artists have spoken publicly about Guru to date. This event has not been billed to be a Gang Starr/Guru tribute to date.

Pre-sale tickets are not available. Perspective attendees may contact RSVP@TheHeavySound.com.

RZA To Produce GZA's Liquid Swords 2

By Houston Williams

Raekwon’s Only Built For Cuban Linx II may have inspired another Wu Tang sequel.

RZA, the architect of the Wu Tang sound, has announced that he’ll be producing the next installment of the GZA’s Liquid Swords, which is largely considered a classic album.

RZA made the announcement via Twitter.

“IT'S TRUE: "LIQUID SWORDS 2" PRODUCED BY THE ABBOT RZA COMING FALL 2010. WHO'S READY FOR THE WU? BONG BONG.”

Liquid Swords is the 1995 second album from the GZA, but the first during his tenure as a leader in the Wu Tang Clan.

B-Real Weighs In On West Coast In-Fighting; Blames Lack Of Radio Support

By Roman Wolfe and Whitney Nichole Stevens

(AllHipHop News) Cypress Hill group member B-Real has weighed in growing division between older West coast rappers and a crop of new emcees from various parts of California.

Cypress Hill and Ice Cube were engaged in a feud on wax between 1995 and 1997.

While he didn’t call out names, Ice Cube took to his blog to address rumors that new talent from the West coast like Jay Rock, Glasses Malone, Crooked I and Bishop Lamont, felt the veterans were not supporting the new artists.

“He’s gotta a point man, he don’t owe anybody nothing,” B-Real told AllHipHop.com. “That’s just the reality of it. He doesn’t own them nothing.”

B-Real was referring to a controversial statement Ice Cube made in March on his official blog, while promoting his new album, I Am the West.

"I don't even remember ever meeting these clowns or even being in the same room with any of 'em. They can't make a name for themselves so they need help from the O/G's. I refuse the throw'em a life line. f**k'em. It ain't my job to make nobody famous," Ice Cube stated.

B-Real said the real culprit is radio on the West coast, in particular and that local radio stations were over saturated with artists from the South.

“You got a few people doing some real cool s**t but then it all starts to sound generic,” B-Real told AllHipHop.com. “And then you can’t differentiate the good from the sh**ty. It starts to all sound the same. And I think that’s the problem that’s going on down there. But I can’t hate, do your thing.”

As for the West coast artists, B-Real agreed that it was important to continue to support the new batch of artists, even if local radio does not.

“These guys ain’t getting no love from the radio, they ain’t getting love from nobody. But once and a while we gotta show these guys some love,” B-Real told AllHipHop.com. “These are the next generation of dudes so we have to support them.”

Cypress Hill’s new album Rise Up hit stores on 4/20.

Dr. Dre's Son Curtis Young Preps Album, Label; Talks New Image

By Morris Moore

(AllHipHop News) Dr. Dre’s biological son Curtis Young hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father, with the launch of his new record label, Young Entertainment Inc.

Like his famous father, Curtis Young, formerly known as Hood Surgeon, also hails from Compton, California.

His debut solo album, titled Product of My DNA, will be released this summer on his Young Ent. Label.

"My world became complete when I finally met my father at the age of 21,” Curtis Young told AllHipHop.com. “I am extremely grateful for my father paving the road for me and many other artists. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to take over a legacy. As a producer, my father has set extremely high standards to existing and upcoming producers all over the globe but my hard and dedicated work will show everyone that I deserve the name Young.”

Young has been active on the West coast mixtape scene with several releases over the past year.

Mixtapes like Family Tree Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Son of A Doctor and Billionaire Dreams have helped Curtis Young gain a local following.

According to Young, he has reshaped his image and his sound represents a “new era of positive feel good music for the West Coast.”

"People can expect a new trendy look from me…I am a new generation of Left Coast artists who can not only rap but produce as well. In the future, my company Young Entertainment Inc, will set high standards and create another element for the Hip-Hop world so get familiar.”

As for Product of My DNA, the album has no release date, but is due in stores sometime this Summer.

The album will reveal intimate details about his relationship with his father Dr. Dre and how the two met for the first time.

"For my debut album, you can expect to learn about the making of Curtis Young,” Young promised. “The story of actually becoming a product of society. People can expect to hear the true meaning of 'Product Of My DNA' that will let people know who Curtis Young is and how I learned about my father, Dr. Dre."

DJ Premier Issues Formal Statement On Guru

By Houston Williams

DJ Premier has issued his official statement on the death of former rap partner Guru. Both men released six influential albums as Gangstarr. The letter is seen in its entirety below.

IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.

FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.

I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER

Cam'ron & Jim Jones Reconcile After Public Apology

by Rashad Phillips

Miss Info reports that last week, she received phone call
from one-time Diplomats co-CEO Jim Jones featuring a public apology to Cam'ron and likely ending the three-year rift within the crew. In a conversation, which apparently took place in Cam'ron's car, Jones claims responsibility for the rift between himself and Cam, saying, "The business of the Diplomats could have been fixed before. But by putting my emotions out in the public, it only made things worse. And of course, some of us became bitter about it."

With each member now focusing on solo projects, Cam'ron added that no new material has been recorded, but he and Jones were "working out the mechanics" to see what could happen.

So far, there has been no word from Juelz Santana. During a 2008 interview with HipHopDX, Juelz voiced his displeasure over how his Def Jam contract was handled, but also remained hopeful things could be resolved.

"I tell people, there’s no hard feelings with Cam" Juelz said. "The business wasn’t right so I couldn’t continue, but it’s still Diplomats for life. I always tell fans it was the business that wasn’t right. As some of the fans get older, I hope they’ll understand that. I hope everything does come to a place where we can get back together in a room and do what we gotta do. But as of now, it is what it is."

DX will provide more news on the possible reunion of the Diplomats as it becomes available.

Cypress HIll Talks To Complex About Most Influential Records

by Salima Koroma

With over 20 years in Rap's consciousness, Cypress Hill is still going strong, just releasing their eighth studio album Rise Up. In an extended interview with Complex Magazine this week, members B-Real and Sen Dog spoke on the inspiration for ten of their most influential records. They explained that little of their music was recorded in-studio, rather their songs were created in group member DJ Muggs' home.

"All of our shit started in Muggs’ bedroom man," said B-Real. "There was probably one song that was created outside of that environment once we got our record deal. Maybe it was “Hole In The Head” and “Latin Lingo.” Those were the two last songs that we recorded for that first album. And those were the only two that were created in a studio and not in Muggs’ bedroom. We were pretty much all together all the time. He’d either be saying, 'Hey you should fuck with this.' Or we’d hear something where we’d be like, 'Hey let’s fuck with that.' We always threw ideas at each other. Really, he was the one for the vision for the music and how he wanted those tracks to sound. We’d just pick the ones we liked."

Sen Dog explained that B-Real's motivation for writing the 1991 record "Pigs," stemmed from a tense run-in with their neighborhood police officers.

"[After the confrontation] B-Real was pretty pissed," explained Sen Dog. "When I rolled up to my house, he was sitting in front of my mom’s house in his car. I rolled up in my driveway and I walked up to him and I was like, 'Hey what are you doing?' And he goes, 'I’m writing a song about the pigs!' He had this look on his face. When I came back outside the house, he was like, 'Listen to this!' That was actually one of the later songs that we recorded during the first album because either Muggs or I reminded him about the poem he wrote about the pigs."

The group members also shared the inspiration for their video "How I Could Just Kill A Man," and explained how they teamed up with Ice Cube for the Friday soundtrack.

Big Boi Solo Album Coming This Summer

By Chris Richburg

(AllHipHop News) The wait for Outkast rapper Big Boi’s solo debut album Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty, as well as a new album from the Atlanta-based duo is coming to end.

The 14-track Def Jam Recordings offering, which features appearances from T.I., Sleepy Brown and Jamie Foxx, will hit stores on July 6.

Producers for the album include Scott Storch, Boi-1da, Organized Noize, Andre 3000 and Lil Jon, among others.

The release of Sir Lucious comes amid a string of delays that raised doubts about the project.

Despite the release of four singles (the 3000 and Raekwon-assisted “Royal Flush,” “Sumthin’s Gotta Give featuring Mary J. Blige, “Ringtone” and “Dubbz”) and leaked collaborations with 3000 and Brown (“Looking for You”), George Clinton and Too Short (“Fo Yo Sorrows”), Gucci Mane (“Shine Blockas”) and T.I. (“Tambourine”), Sir Lucious was never made available to the public.

Shortly after the album summer release, Big Boi will appear at the Pitchfork Music Festival. The event, will take place during the July 16-18 weekend in Union Park in Chicago.

In addition to Sir Lucious, plans to unleash the follow-up to Outkast ’s 2006 opus, the soundtrack to the film Idlewid, will resume. Big Boi confirmed to Billboard.com that the long-awaited album will be released after Sir Lucious.

Guru's Family Questions Authenticity Of Death Bed Letter

By Gentle Jones

(AllHipHop News) The family of Gang Starr emcee Guru, has released a statement in hopes that AllHipHop.com and other media outlets would release the information to fans of the late rapper.

The letter states that Guru, born Keith Elam, was comatose and remained unconscious from February this year until his death.

The letter also disputes the legitimacy of any foundations purported to operate on Guru's behalf.

"The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

from The Elam Family”

To be accurate, Solar did mention the Each One Counts foundation referenced in the original letter allegedly written by Guru in a previous interview in 2008 with Guru and AllHipHop.com.

Guru died of cancer on Monday, April 19th.

Guru of Gangstarr Dies, Writes Letter To Supporters

By Houston Williams

(AllHipHop News) Legendary Gangstarr artist Guru has succumbed to cancer after a lengthy bout with the disease.

The artist, born Keith Elam, died on Monday April 19. He was 43 years old.

Solar, Guru's partner, expressed sadness over the loss.

"The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all-time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru," Solar said in a statement. "Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it, but tragically, this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius.

Guru, a Boston native, rose to fame in the 80's as one half of Gangstarr, the iconic rap group with DJ Premier.

The group released six highly regarded albums in their tenure until 2003 when they broke up. After his successful run with Premier, Guru founded 7 Grand Records with producer Solar.

Solar went on to tend to the rapper as he fell ill, seemingly controlling the flow of information and access to Guru. Many of his family members complained that they were denied their right to see him.

Solar also said that Guru wrote a letter to fans and sent it out through a press agency.

"For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can't tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter (read below) while he was in the hospital for the fans," the producer continued. "I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place."

In the letter, seen below, the rapper explains his illness, expresses gratitude to supporters and offers some parting words for DJ Premiere.

I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options.

I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting.

My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own.

I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on Jazzmatazz 4 for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with Jazzmatazz 4 of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life.

AllHipHop.com sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Keith Elam.

KRS, Rap Pioneers To Build Governing Body For Hip-Hop

(AllHipHop News) A number of Hip-Hop pioneers will gather at S.O.B.’s in New York tomorrow (April 20th) to focus on a unified front in maintaining and continuing the integrity and preservation of the culture.

KRS-One’s Temple of Hip Hop in association with the Universal Zulu Nation will host an ongoing series of discussions regarding the cultural integrity of Hip-Hop.

"Pioneers will come to the April 20th meeting at S.O.B’s, to form a consensus and build a framework of a governing body," stated KRS-One, Founder of the Temple of Hip Hop.

Additionally, the discussions will lead to the creation of a Supreme Council, as well as a plan to compensate pioneers for their contribution to the genre.

"If you want to do any project that has to do with the culture of Hip Hop, it has to be run through the pioneers," said the Universal Nation’s DJ Yoda.

On Tuesday, April 6th, KRS-One appeared at the launch party for the National Museum of Hip Hop, a non-profit launched in 2005, to document the of Hip-Hop culture to society throughout the world.
By Roman Wolfe

He revealed that a number of pioneering rappers, including Africa Bambaataa and Kool Herc, did not support the National Museum of Hip-Hop’s mission.

"I think it’s a great thing that the Pioneers are coming together for this most important positive cause. If it has to do with the preservation of the hip-hop culture, NMoH is behind it 100%," stated Craig Wilson, President of the National Museum of Hip-Hop, who will not attend the meeting.

Wilson will participate in future meetings at S.OB.’s, as will other pioneers.

A pioneers dinner will take place at 5:00 PM, with media opportunities to follow from 6:00pm-7:00 PM. The open discussion starts at 7:00 at S.O.B.s.

B.I.G. Lawsuit Against Los Angeles, LAPD Dismissed

By Roman Wolfe

(AllHipHop News) A federal has judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the mother of the later rapper Notorious B.I.G., which blamed the city of Los Angeles and the LAPD for her son’s death.

On Monday April 5th, Judge Jacqueline Nguyen dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice, after an eight-year wrongful death lawsuit in federal court.

Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace, was gunned down in March of 1997, after attending an after party during the Soul Train Awards in Los Angeles.

Although it has never been proven, the wrongful death lawsuit claimed that Marion “Suge” Knight conspired with Amir Muhammad, the alleged triggerman and LAPD officers Rafael Perez and David Mack, to murder Notorious B.I.G.

B.I.G. had been feuding with Tupac Shakur, who was gunned down on the Las Vegas strip six months earlier, in September of 1996.

In March of 2006, U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper ruled in favor of B.I.G., awarding the family a $1.1 million dollar judgment against the city.

In May of 2006, Judge Cooper dismissed the previous ruling in the case, after discovering the family had information they told the court they did not have access to.

In June of 2006, the city of Los Angeles claimed B.I.G.‘s attorneys went to “absurd lengths” to "satisfy their ambition to extract hundreds of millions of dollars from the city.”

Vinyl
sales were one of the music industry's few bright spots in 2009, as overall sales increased by 50% to 1.9 million units of vinyl sold. The increased interest in wax in recent years has sparked such trends as Record Store Day.

Record Store Day began in 2007 after being conceived by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehner. The founders say they created the day "as a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally."

Artists ranging from the likes of Paul McCartney and Norah Jones to Doomtree's P.O.S. and Webbie have become noted supporters.

"The opinion of those people working at record stores are so important to me as a customer," added Paul Wall. "They'll tell me what's good and let me know the truth on what's only hype. They'll tell me, 'When you buy this, listen to track [number] six' and might even say, 'There's only two really good songs on there, the rest is just B.S.' They know the history about the artists and music. When I buy music I want quality music. At the record store they can let me know what's good, not just what the top seller is."

This year, Hip Hop legends the Beastie Boys are releasing a limited run of 1,000 copies of their white label 12", Super Surprise. And as the title suggests, they have given no indication of what's actually included on the release.

Detroit mainstay, and Slaughterhouse member, Royce Da 5'9" will release a double 12" set of 2009's Street Hop album, while Critical darlings, The Gorillaz, will release a 10" vinyl version of the track "White Flag" from their latest album, Plastic Beach.

Raekwon Speaks On Wu-Tang Clan "Love" & "Animosity"

by Andres Tardio

Raekwon the Chef is proud to state that Wu fans are awake again. The emcee who released last year's Only Built for Cuban Linx 2, which received rave reviews, has already followed that up with Wu Massacre, an album with two other Wu brothers Ghostface and Method Man. However, no matter what the members of the Shaolin clan seem to do, talk always seems to center around group problems and issues. In a recent interview with DJ Jenny Boom Boom, Raekwon spoke on the Wu Massacre album and the fact that there may be animosity in the crew from time to time, but explains that it's normal.

"The Wu Massacre was something that Ghostface and Def Jam put together and asked for my assistance. I just came through for them...So Ghost quarterbacked the whole movement of that Wu Massacre album. But, it's really just to make sure that we let the fans know we're going to drop more music," he said of the collaborative project. "In my eyes, I wanted to do it independently but this is what Ghost wanted to do...so I supported it."

During the interview, he also added that the trio made an effort to make "Our Dreams, which they felt would be viable commercially. Alicia Keys also helped with the project, which Rae says she did out of love and kindness. Still, the Massacre didn't leave Method Man incredibly happy. As Rae explains, he and Meth were somewhat out of the equation and both felt the record should have gotten a better push from the label.

"This is something that me and Meth didn't really have too much knowledge about...Overall, he just thought that if we had a little bit more time to do a couple more new records, and really put a heavy promotional foot on it, we probably could have made this situation a little bit better. But, maybe Def Jam was just feeling like 'Cuban Linx is rockin' right now and we're just trying to follow that wave.'"

Whenever creative differences come up with the Wu, it's difficult to forget the tension that existed when the Wu released their last album together. Talk of the members not getting along grew and it seemed we would never get another disc from the clan. However, when asked if their next album was being held up by turmoil, Rae was frank in his response.

"No, it's not no beef in the crew. There's love in the crew. Even if there is animosity here and there, that's normal. That's life for you."

Still, Rae would not make a prediction about another Wu album.

DJ Premier On Kanye's New Album: 'Strictly Hard Beats And Rhymes

by Slava Kuperstein

n a recent interview with The Red Bulletin, legendary Hip Hop producer DJ Premier spoke briefly on Kanye's career, as well as his highly-anticipated fifth album.

Preme noted how Kanye's emphasis on sampling brought the production technique back to the forefront at a time when synth-laden soundscapes were the norm. "Well, first of all, if you look at all of Kanye West’s output, he actually did a lot to bring back sampling and make it cool again, even though he’s more of a mainstream artist."

Premier also provided insight on Ye's new album, revealing that the Chicago producer/emcee would be taking a back-to-basics approach - presumably typical of his debut, College Dropout. "his new album is strictly hard beats and rhymes. He’s totally done with electro. You’re gonna be surprised what you hear."

This fuels already rampant speculation regarding Kanye's project, thought to be titled Good Ass Job, as it was reported recently that Q-Tip, RZA and Pete Rock might all be contributors to the project.

Immortal Technique Speaks on ‘Middle Passage’ Delay

By Ismael AbduSalaam and Chuck "Jigsaw" Creekmu

(AllHipHop News) Political emcee Immortal Technique is close to finishing his 4th album, The Middle Passage.

As an entrepreneurial artist that also serves as president of Viper Records, Technique explained that he has been very meticulous in his approach to the new LP, which he expects to be his biggest project to date.

“[We’re] 8 songs deep into the middle passage,” he told AllHipHop.com. “There was one sample that wasn’t clearable so we had to redo the song so it’s just been little stuff because we are trying to do it as official as possible.”

Because Immortal Technique is focused on the album having a streamlined focus, another project for additional songs is in early stages to accommodate fans.

“It’s a very, very vivid journey and then besides that, I will probably have a supplement to that as well,” he revealed. “Besides just the record, I got another 5-6 songs that are from a few years ago that didn’t really match the vibe of the album, but they’re still dope, so we might do an unreleased Immortal Technique EP.”

Viper Records is also still in the midst of a promotional run for Long Island rapper Diabolic’s Liar and a Thief LP, available at www.viperecords.com.

At press time, Immortal Technique has not finalized a release date for The Middle Passage.

Murs Reveals Process Of Making 'ForNever' With 9th Wonder

By Jake Crates

(AllHipHop News) Los Angeles born and raised rapper Murs and Raleigh, North Carolina producer 9th Wonder are gearing up for what could be one of their most successful releases to date.

In what is widely regarded as their fourth release, ForNever is a 10 track album that features the assistance of Kurupt, Verbs, 9thmatic, Suga Free, Sick Wonder and Uncle Chucc.

“I try to combine everyone, so its not just Hip-Hop, or gangster rap or Latino rap or backpacker Hip-Hop. I just put them all on the same record and put my name on it,” Murs told AllHipHop.com. “I am all of that. It’s just like ‘lets rap’. Let make good music and to me it’s the album I always wanted to make. Its extremely West Coast, but its still real Hip-Hop because 9th Wonder gives it a traditional Hip-Hop bed or foundation.”

Many fans regard this as the pair’s fourth collaboration, due to the fact that the artists’ record labels were holding back the third project they worked in 2008, called Sweet Lord.

“I count it as the fourth,” Murs told AllHipHop.com. “This one was different. We did it in LA, we did it in Inglewood and we were on the West Coast. So I got to bring through my patnas and my homies and I was more in my element. Usually we are out East, where 9th records around Thanksgiving time.”

When asked about how the project came together, Murs stated that 9th always came with between 12-15 beats to choose from.

“From there we narrow it down, or he narrows them down. I definitely don’t pick any of them. I believe in letting the producer produce, so whatever he comes up with [that] sounds good. I never argue with him,” Murs revealed.

Murs has also announced that he will sell limited edition products through his new online store called MursWorld.com.

While users can immediately download the new ForNever album on the site, they can also purchase a deluxe package, that includes a Murs t-shirt, the physical CD, an immediate download of the new project, and the rare and unreleased DVD/CD, Murs for Dummies, of which the first 20 ordered will be autographed.

Murs recently finished up his Paid Dues 2010 festival in L.A., a festival that he has been putting together for the past 5 years featuring independent artists relevant in the Hip-Hop community, in association with Guerilla Union.

This year’s concert featured Ice Cube, Tech N9NE, Raekwon, Tha Dogg Pound, Jay Electronic, Freeway + Jake One, Dilated Peoples, Del tha Funky Homosapien, Strong Arm Steady, Necro, People Under the Stairs, and the legendary Freestyle Fellowship.

“This year I wanted to expand the brand and include West Coast legends,” Murs told AllHipHop.com. “In the end it’s what we grew up on. For us, Kurupt is just as dope as Rakim is to people in New York. “We all hear it coming out of the cars here. Big Daddy Kane and DJ Quik are the same to me. Why can’t they be on a Hip-Hop festival?”

Game Reunites With Dr. Dre On R.E.D. Album

By Roman Wolfe

(AllHipHop News) Compton, California rap star Game has officially confirmed June 15th as the date he will release his fourth solo release, the R.E.D. Album.

The release is being executive produced by Game and Pharrell Williams, who produced tracks on the album along with Dr. Dre, who offered his production expertise, in addition to laying down rap vocals for the R.E.D. Album.

“Game is good kid…and I'm excited for the world to hear the many facets of his character...what's even crazier is that as a fan, I cannot believe I am actually producing songs on the same album as Dr. Dre. Humbling, man…I owe Game for that one. His album is gonna be a problem," stated Pharrell.

The first official single from the album will be “It Must Be Me,” which will be followed up with “Aint No Doubt About It,” which features Justin Timberlake.

“I never thought I would have the chance to work with Justin, but to come up with a smash like we did, it’s only fitting,” Game said today (April 13th).

Game also expressed excitement in reuniting with his mentor Dr. Dre on the R.E.D. Album, which he believes could be the biggest release of his career.

“Dre is a hip hop legend and one of the reasons I’m making music," Game continued. "To be working so closely with him again…man, I don’t even have words to describe it…my two favorite producers are helping me with the direction of this album, I couldn’t be in a better position.”

Rhymefest: “I Got N***as I Want To Air Out

By Ismael AbduSalaam and Jake Crates

Rhymefest is promising to put his peers on notice publicly with the release of his revolution-inspired El Che next month.

The project is Rhymefest’s second full-length album, and comes 4 years after his major-label debut Blue Collar on J Records.

Because of the delay and label politics, the Chicago emcee was forced to rework the album and keep his name afloat with guest spots and mixtapes, most notably the Dangerous: 5-18 tape released last week.

“We changed the whole album. The album El Che drops May 18. Ni**as been saying, ‘Aw, ni**a…that’s the Detox El Che,’” Rhymefest told AllHipHop.com. “No, it’s my album and its coming out. It’s not a legend. It’s not a fairy tale. I had to get away from that label.”

Rhymefest utilizes interludes throughout the album to tell the narrative of his revolutionary activity while being tailed relentlessly by unidentified agents.

On the album track “Talk My S**t,” he takes credit over former foe Charles Hamilton’s decreased output and visibility in recent months (“Wet behind the ears I make Chucky disappear…”), and criticizes Wale for not heeding his advice for his debut Attention Deficit (“Even before Wale bricked/I tried to pull him to the side and say those white boys won’t sell your s**t!”)

Regarding these callouts, Rhymefest advised fans and critics to expect to hear him focused and sharp on El Che.

“I got names I wanna name. I got ni**as I want to air out. I’m about to kill it,” Rhymefest explained to AllHipHop.com.

El Che will be available May 18, and features guest spots from Little Brother, Glenn Lewis, and Saigon

Shyne To Drop New Single Next Tuesday

By Mike Winslow

(AllHipHop News) Shyne is gearing up to release the first official single from his upcoming album via a new deal between his Gangland Records, and Island/Def Jam.

According to reports, Shyne will drop the single next Tuesday (April 13th), making it his first new single in almost 10 years.

In February, Shyne inked a seven-figure deal with Island/Def Jam and began recording his album in Belize, where IDJ CEO L.A. Reid hosted a press conference announcing the new business deal.

Shyne is barred from entering the United States and was not allowed to enter the United Kingdom in February, due to his criminal record.

Shyne, aka Moses Leviy, was released from prison in October of 2009, after serving over 9 years in prison for his role in a nightclub shootout in 1999, involving Bad Boy Records’ CEO Sean “Diddy” Combs and his then girlfriend Jennifer Lopez.

Shyne was supposed to be featured on DJ Khaled’s album Victory, but the track, named “All My Life,” featuring Akon and Mavado, was dropped for legal reasons.

According to reports, Shyne is collaborating with Scott Storch, who is said to be producing a large portion of the album.

He is also working with producer Coptic, who has confirmed that he created a track for Shyne titled “Hand on My 45.”

Dr. Dre Hints at Kraftwerk Inspiration on Detox

By: Ismael AbduSalaam

With the long-awaited first single from Detox set to debut later this month, Dr. Dre has alluded to several possible musical influences on the project.

In an interview with Reuters, the acclaimed producer disclosed his focus has been on studying the avant-garde artists of the 1960’s and 70’s.

"I'm just keeping my ear to the concrete,” Dre revealed. “I've been listening to a lot of old 60s and 70s music. Things like Kraftwerk, and Parliament Funkadelic. I've really been listening to a lot of Kraftwerk.”

The work of the Germany-based Kraftwerk in the 70’s and early 80’s were important building blocks for the emerging culture of Hip-Hop. Their innovative use of synthesizers and robotized vocals on the songs “Trans-Europe Express” and “Numbers” formed the sampling foundation for many Hip-Hop records, such as Afrika Bambaataa’s seminal 1982 single “Planet Rock.”

"Kraftwerk had a really big inspiration on the beginning of Hip-Hop,” Dre continued. “My tastes change with the season. Right now it's Kraftwerk. I'll see what happens this summer."

While Dr. Dre has extensively sampled and worked with George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic on previous tracks such as “Let Me Ride” (“Mothership Connection”), “Dre Day” (“Knot Just (Knee Deep)”), and “Bitches Ain’t Shit” (“Adolescent Funk”), the Compton native has not extensively utilized Kraftwerk’s music before.

The band’s work can also be heard in songs from Jay-Z (“It’s Alright,” “Sunshine”), Kool G Rap (“Rhymes I Express”), De La Soul (“Ghetto Thang”), and MC Lyte (“Cha Cha Cha”).

Detox’s Jay-Z assisted “Under Pressure” single features additional production credits from Scott Storch and No I.D, and vocals from Ester Dean. It's expected to drop within the next two weeks.

By Roman Wolf

(AllHipHop News) Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, T-Pain, Ludacris and a host of other artists have teamed up to celebrate the legacy of pioneering musician Quincy Jones on the new album Q: Soul Boss Nostra.

Jones, who serves as executive producer of the project, called upon the top artists and producers in the music industry to create Q: Soul Bossa Nostra.

In addition to the aforementioned rappers, the album features appearances by Usher, John Legend, Talib Kweli, Mary J. Blige, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Robin Thicke, Wyclef Jean, Q-Tip, Three 6 Mafia, David Banner, BeBe Winans, Scott Storch, Mervyn Warren and Jermaine Dupri.

Each artist picked a song to remake from Jones’ vast catalog, which spans six decades.

"Each artist picked a song that really resonated with them for different reasons - some of them having a connection because they remembered their parents playing the track when they were growing up," Jones told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “I am honored that everyone wanted to be a part of this celebration of these songs. They all made them their own, and knocked them out of the park."

The first single from the album is Akon’s remake of “Strawberry Letter 23,” originally a hit for The Brothers Johnson in 1977.

Jones has collaborated with a number of top artists during his legendary career.

In 1989, Jones released Back on the Block, which featured songs by artists like Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Big Daddy Kane, Ice-T, Prince and others.

In 1995, Jones released Q’s Juke Joint, which featured appearances by LL Cool J, Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Patti Austin, Sarah Vaughn, Gloria Estefan, Kid Capri, Funkmaster Flex and others.

Throughout his career, Jones has worked with everyone from Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, to Will Smith and Michael Jackson.

Quincy Jones’ Q: Soul Boss Nostra is due in stores in May or June, on Interscope Records.
