Chris Lighty, Founder Of Violator Found Dead

by Allen Jacobs
Police reports confirm that Chris Lighty took his own life amidst a difficult year for the veteran music executive. Longtime Hip Hop executive Chris Lighty has died. News broke today (August 30) first on Twitter and then confirmed on VIBE.com that the Bronx, New York native and founder of Violator Entertainment died from an alleged suicide. Details are still emerging. Lighty was integral to the careers of 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, N.O.R.E., Diamond D, and many others. After growing up under the tutelage of Hip Hop icons like DJ Red Alert, Lighty began working professional at Russell Simmons' RUSH Management firm in the late 1980s, where he helped work with Def Jam Records artists and others in securing endorsement deals and touring. A part of the Native Tongues at the turn of the decade, Lighty and his brother as The Violators, helped the movement alongside A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. The Violator name carried on in the late 1990s and 2000s, when Lighty launched his own firm. The management company handled clients ranging from Diamond D and Foxy Brown to Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip. In recent years, Lighty was working on Brand Asset Group with Lyor Cohen, his longtime associate and friend, and Warner Music Group. Last September, Violator merged with Primary Wave to form powerhouse management company Primary Violator. N.O.R.E. mourned the passing on Twitter, saying, "I will be a Violator for life 4ever." UPDATE: The New York Daily News confirms that Lighty was found dead at his apartment in Bronx, New York this morning at 11:30 am EST. He was shot in the head in what arriving officers reported was self-inflicted. Police officials also told the newspaper that Lighty, 44 years old, was newly divorced and owed the IRS several million dollars. HipHopDX extends our condolences to the Lighty family, Violator and all of Chris' friends and associates. hiphopdx.com

Cory Gunz Previews New Mixtape "That's WTF I'm Talkin' Bout"

by Steven J. Horowitz Cory Gunz explains why he's been quiet in the game for a minute. Cory Gunz recently sat down with Fuse.tv to preview his upcoming mixtape That's WTF I'm Talkin' Bout. The YMCMB explained how he initially signed with the house that Birdman and Slim built and his relationship with Lil Wayne. He also spoke on why he's remained silent for a minute, stating that he's been putting in work on records that he's gearing up to drop. "I've been working, I've been real quiet but it's been for a good reason. In all honesty, I haven't released a record. I never released a single. To maintain and be relevant for so long at this point in the game without having a debut is unheard of, bro. I don't want to say whenever I'm ready, but when the time is right, the time is right. The records are going to speak for themselves." hiphopdx.com

Chino XL Announces 35-Track Release “RICANstruction: The Black Rosary”

by Mike Winslow Rapper Chino XL has announced the release date for RICANstruction: The Black Rosary, his first album in over six years. RICANstruction will be a double-CD release that is being released by Viper Records, the label that is owned by Immortal Technique. Immortal Technique is one of the guests who appear on the 35-track effort, while rappers/artists like Travis Barker, Bun B, Tech N9ne and B Real round out the album. According to Chino, RICANstruction is his most introspective work-to-date, delving into serious matters like the abuse he suffered as a child, failed relationships, suicide and his daughter’s battle with cancer. “It’s a complete unbottling of a lot of stuff, things that I probably had suppressed,” Chino XL explained. “The human psyche has the ability and the power to do that in order to keep it functioning. I felt that it was time to let most of it out so I could move on and get past some of those issues. Whilst on tour last year, I realized how many people I connected to when I expressed a lot of those more painful, emotional songs. It seemed like a lot of folks really needed to hear them. I can learn from that to help them relate so they can also get past what they had going on. I realized that’s part of my journey.” Chino hopes the main focus of RICANstruction will be what he has become famous for – complex lyrics and rhyme patterns. “I believe that it’s my contribution to the art form, to art in general and to music,” Chino XL continued. “I feel like if you’re not going to try to raise the bar, then what are you doing it for? I try to do it because I feel like that’s part of my blessing and to share my blessing, I have to propel the art form and push the boundaries of language.” RICANstruction: The Black Rosary is due in stores on September 25. allhiphop.com

Tech N9ne "E.B.A.H." EP Cover Art

by Steven J. Horowitz

Tech N9ne has been collaborating with heavyweights over the past few years, recently linking with Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne. For his fourteenth studio album E.B.A.H., the Strange Music leader hopes to link with Rick Ross, Eminem and Nas, telling AHH that he's got a track titled "Heaven and Hell" on reserve for the Maybach Music Group boss.
"Hopefully we can make it happen. Same thing with [Eminem]," he said. "I’ve got an idea for Em and I’m trying to make it happen and if he thinks I’m good enough to do a song with then it’ll happen.”
Tech also has records on reserve for Talib Kweli, Marsha Ambrosius, Waka Flocka Flame and Roscoe Dash. He addressed criticism that he's selling out, but he justifies that he's staying true to his artistry.
"The mainstream is gonna go Tech, motherfucker. The real shit always shines,” he continued. “I know I’m not popular enough for everybody and Hip-Hop is a popularity contest. I’m not going to go above and beyond to be the most popular if my lyrics can’t speak for me.”

AWAR Explains Making "The Laws Of Nature," Releasing Album With Nottz

by Homer Johnsen

Albany, New York emcee AWAR breaks down his just-released album as a career benchmark. He also explains getting down with Nottz and Raw Koncept.
Albany, New York is not known for its Hip Hop scene. Emcee AWAR, however, is out to change that perception. Since entering the game in 2005, Awar has become one of the hardest working and most popular emcees to come out of Upstate New York.
In a recent phone interview with HipHopDX, AWAR talked about his ascension within the independent world, and polishing his most recent debut LP, The Laws of Nature, which was released yesterday (August 7). The work boasts production and features from Alchemist, Nottz and Murs, among others.
Beyond personnel, The Laws of Nature features both AWAR’s gritty streetwise and soulful lyrics, and fans of all of Hip Hop’s sub-genres can appreciate his dynamism. “The soulful stuff really speaks to me but it allows me to speak on a more personal level sometimes, whereas I also feel like, especially where I come from, some of the more rugged tracks really speak to the real Hip Hop audience a lot,” AWAR noted, with plenty more to say:
HipHopDX: So my first question for you is, you’re from upstate New York, whereabouts exactly?
AWAR: I’m from the Albany area, 518. I actually grew up in a smaller town outside of Albany but you know, Albany and 518 is the area where I’m from.
DX: Do you consider the Albany Hip Hop scene to be, you know, along the same lines as the traditional New York, East Coast scene?
AWAR: Um, I’d say it’s very... Albany’s scene is very mixed. It’s got a lot of hardcore influence to it and there’s a lot of live band Hip Hop stuff going on too. There’s definitely some you know, other artists that are kind of known that are kind of involved in Albany’s scene as well. Like J-Live, he hosts stuff every year. There’s definitely a lot of talent from Albany, but I’d say that, you know, there’s definitely a different sound coming out of Albany than New York City as a whole.

Even though Slaughterhouse revealed the tracklist and cover art to its upcoming Shady debut welcome to: Our House, the group is still planning to release a mixtape before the LP's August 28 drop date. Now, in a recent promo video, the Voltron crew announced the title of its upcoming DJ Drama-hosted mixtape.
While recording a new song titled "See Dead People," Joe Budden announced the name of the crew's upcoming Gangsta Grillz release On the House. Budden joked that the project was going to be "lightweight," with members sometimes spitting a hefty 60 bars per verse.
"So today is day whatever of [the recording of] the Slaughterhouse mixtape…On the House," Budden revealed. "That was pretty clever, naming the mixtape On the House. [It's] coming to you guys soon, very soon, before the album. These guys are rapping like robots. Took me a little while, but we got it there. Little lightweight - 56 bars, 58 bars, 60 bars of rapping. It's a mixtape, so you go as long as you want to go. We're just gonna go, yahmean?"

Tech N9ne Reveals Plans To Collaborate With Nas And Rick Ross On New Album; Responds to “Mainstream” Accusations

by JP DelaCuesta With a record-breaking tour to his name and the gold-certification of his 2006 single “Caribou Lou” both occurring in the past month, Strange Music founder Tech N9ne has begun plotting out details for his fourteenth solo studio album, E.B.A.H.
“They say I did All 6′s and 7′s in 28 days, and I want to believe that,” Tech N9ne told AllHipHop.com. “But if you do a song a day, then you’ve got 28 days, and I usually did three songs a day back when I had time. Now I’m writing in the studio, because I can’t write on tour. I’m just going to see what comes out of me in the next 28 days.”
Regarding possible collaborations for his new album, Tech N9ne spoke on an idea he had to record with Rick Ross for a track called “Heaven and Hell”: “I love Rick as a person, and I love what he’s become lyrically, and I don’t give a f*ck what nobody say.
“Hopefully we can make it happen. Same thing with [Eminem]. I’ve got an idea for Em and I’m trying to make it happen and if he thinks I’m good enough to do a song with then it’ll happen.”
Tech N9ne revealed that he has ideas for records with the likes of Roscoe Dash, Nas, Waka Flocka, Marsha Ambrosius, and Talib Kweli brewing in his head as well.
Regarding the accusations that he’s gone “mainstream” and “sold-out” after more high-profile collaborations with Lil Wayne, T-Pain, B.o.B., and Busta Rhymes on his last album, All 6′s and 7′s, he responded, “The mainstream is gonna go Tech, motherf*cker. The real sh*t always shines,” he proclaimed to AllHipHop.com.
“I know I’m not popular enough for everybody and Hip-Hop is a popularity contest,” he conceded. “I’m not going to go above and beyond to be the most popular if my lyrics can’t speak for me.”

Atlanta’s International Music Conference Gives Aspiring Artists Access to the Global Music Scene

by Biba Adams
With a goal to present aspiring artists with clear routes to accessing the global music scene, the 2nd Annual International Music Conference (IMC) returns to Atlanta from August 8-11, with a star-studded panel of recording industry heavyweights.
“The IMC provides invaluable feedback and advice about taking your career to the next level,” says IMC CEO/Founder Julia Huie-Martin. “A lot of our registrants from last year are still in contact with panelists from last year.”
In addition to the showcases, there are numerous panels including: Breaking into International Markets, Maximizing the DJ Network, and Crossing the Globe: Marketing & Promoting Overseas. Last year’s IMC panelists included Rico Love, Bangladesh, and Don Cannon.
DJ Green Lantern
This year proves to be no less of a stellar panel draw, featuring DJ Green Lantern, as well as Grammy-award winning producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Chuck Harmony, Drumma Boy, and Kane Beatz. The panels also feature dozens of recording industry executives and attorneys.
“It’s a great opportunity to do some real networking,” says Huie-Martin. “The IMC prides itself on quality over quantity. We have some of the biggest names in the business that can help you get that one step further in your career.”
This year’s conference offers attendees prizes that include a trip to London, England, the opportunity to work with a chart-topping act from Europe, and one-on-one meetings with executives and VPs from Sony Records and Atlantic Records.
Established in 2011, the four-day event brings together key music professionals, radio personalities, DJs, executives, artists, managers, producers, songwriters, booking agents, and promoters from around the globe for panel discussions, workshops, closed-door meetings and networking opportunities. The IMC also features showcases for producers, artists, and songwriters, which provide the registered attendees with immediate feedback on their work and its viability to translate into global success.
The 2012 IMC will kick off on Wednesday, August 8 with a private “Welcome to Atlanta” Industry Mixer; Thursday will feature the DJ Mix-Off and Producer Showcase; Friday is the Artist Showcase; and Saturday is dedicated to a full day of educating developing artists from 9AM to 7PM.
“Atlanta’s a great music mecca that needs to be put on the global map, much in the same way Nashville, L.A., and NY is. A lot of people from overseas overlook Atlanta and it’s a shame because most of the biggest stars out right now are from here,” says Huie-Martin. “Having IMC here is exciting because of the potential of people from all over the world coming together, working, and making great music.”
To register for the 2012 International Music Conference, visit their official website. Follow the IMC on Twitter (@theofficialimc).
*ATLANTA-AREA FANS – AllHipHop.com is giving away five (5) pairs of tickets to the 2012 IMC. The deadline is Friday, August 3 at 8PM
