50 Cent Delays "Street King Immortal" To Spring

by Steven J. Horowitz 50 Cent says that a shift at Interscope Records caused another delay for his new album. 50 Cent has hit another bump on the road to release of his oft-delayed Street King Immortal. During an interview with MTV News, the G-Unit general said that the LP, which was originally scheduled to drop on February 26th, has now been pushed back to Spring after a staff shuffle over at Interscope Records. "Street King Immortal, this Spring, because I'm waiting for - actually, it's the system," said Fif. "It's a lot of adjustments being made there. Obviously Christmas, I think 35 people got let go. So it's interesting. It's a shift in whose responsibilities are what. So I'm confident they'll put it together." The rapper has already released the lead single "My Life" featuring Eminem and Adam Levine, and plans to release the video for "Major Distribution" featuring Snoop Dogg and Young Jeezy soon.

Jermaine Dupri to Celebrate 20th So So Def Anniversary with Concert

by Whitney McDonald It’s hard to believe that 20 years have passed since Jermaine Dupri first established So So Def Recordings. Through a joint venture with Sony Music and Columbia Records, the hip hop mogul’s vision first began with female R&B group Xscape. Dupri’s label would later become responsible for classic material from top artists including Da Brat, Jagged Edge, Anthony Hamilton, Dem Franchise Boyz, Dondria, 3LW, Bone Crusher, Bow Wow’s triple platinum debut LP and many more. To say the least, Dupri’s contributions to the music industry via his unique production skills, songwriting, and ability to hone artists has in turn birthed some of the best records within hip hop and R&B. To commemorate two decades in the industry, JD recently released a song aptly titled, “Celebration,” which boasts features from current So So Def artists as well as notable alums. The song was recorded over Game’s latest single, “Jesus Piece.” More importantly though, the famed music producer has announced that he will be hosting a So So Def anniversary concert at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre on February 23rd. Dupri recently posted the official flyer for the upcoming concert event as well as photo of him discussing plans for the show alongside the twins from Jagged Edge, Brandon and Brian Casey. Tickets will be available on Saturday. Hopefully the forthcoming all-star showcase will include memorable songs like “My Boo” from The Ghost Town DJs, J-Kwon’s party anthem “Tipsy,” Rocko’s biggest hit “Umma Do Me”, and perhaps Da Brat will treat the crowd to “Funkdafied.” allhiphop.com

University of Arizona Introduces First Ever Hip-Hop Minor

by Jake Crates The University of Arizona recently announced that it has created a “Hip-Hop Concentration” in the College of Humanities’ minor for Africana Studies, reportedly the first of its kind for the institution. According to the description of the minor and its objectives, the University of Arizona seeks to ”provide students with a solid introduction and broad understanding of the origins and developing of the forms of expression that make up Hip-Hop cultures throughout the world: Hip-Hop dance, rap music, graffiti/tagging, fashion, business, and film. The Minor introduces students to the main themes represented in Hip-Hop cultures: appropriation and defense of spaces, mixing of different cultures, migrations, multilingualism, race, class, gender, religions, sexuality, nationality, politics and the economy, and, the search for identity.” “The UA is more open to new, challenging, ambitious, creative and even controversial topics than almost any other university in the world,” Alain-Philippe Durand, director of Africana Studies at the University of Arizona explained. “Here, you are not told to stay in your corner. It is the opposite: You are constantly pushed and encouraged to break boundaries.”” Courses for the minor include Rap, Culture and God, Hip-Hop Cinema, US & Francophone Hip-Hop Cultures, Blacks in Hollywood, Pan-African Dance Aesthetics and a host of other classes geared towards African-American studies and African-American History. Ultimately the course seeks to give students the opportunity to investigate Hip-Hop’s cultural impact, which the University of Arizona acknowledges “severely impacted many elements of mainstream American culture to the extent that corporations have embraced hip-hop music and artists as a means of marketing goods to everyone.” For more on the minor at the University of Arizona check it out here: Minor in Africana Studies with Concentration in Hip-Hop Cultures allhiphop.com
