Reks Talks "More Grey Hairs," Lupe Fiasco Jab

Author: Paul W Arnold

Most of his 2009 rap peers may be “catching amnesia” while he’s “catching nostalgia,” as he cleverly observed on this year’s first truly flawless Hip Hop song, “System” [click to listen], but Boston lyricist Reks isn’t living in the past. While the soul and jazz-tinged boom-bap sound of his music may conjure up memories of classic ‘90’s east coast Hip Hop, the author of one of 2008’s most critically-acclaimed albums, Grey Hairs [click to read], is firmly focused on the future.

And HipHopDX recently spoke with Rhythmatic Eternal Kings Supreme to find out what he has in store for us in the coming months to solidify his standing as one of the most important independent artists in Hip Hop today. The longtime friend of Beantown producer/deejay Statik Selektah (signed to Statik’s Showoff Records) also shared with DX his reasoning for recently spewing his emcee ether in the direction of Lupe Fiasco.

First up for Reks in ’09 is his album-before-the-album (and addendum to his last album), More Grey Hairs, due in stores by the spring.

“This [is] a collection of material that we felt should have made ‘Grey Hairs,’ but we just could not extend ‘Grey Hairs’ any further,” Reks explained to DX of his forthcoming release. “We had a bunch of records that we had already prepared that we felt like were good enough but were just not fitting into the whole collective as much as the other records were. And so these records were put aside so we could release ‘em shortly after ‘Grey Hairs’ dropped… [But] “System” [is] a new record. We did a few new records for [‘More Grey Hairs’].”

A host of up-and-coming producers helm the bulk of the trackwork on More, including Immortal Technique’s deejay, G.I. Joe, who crafted the album’s first official offering, the aforementioned “System.” The budding beatmaker having been brought to Reks attention following his appearance on the scratchfest, “No Mistakes Allowed,” from Statik Selektah’s first full-length, 2007’s Spell My Name Right. Also putting in work on More is Florida-based trackmaster Timeless Beats, who contributed the soulful lament on the realities of our recession era “Dear Winter” [click to listen], and Reks’ former classmates at the University of Massachusetts, the Soul Searchers, who were absent from the creation of Grey Hairs but instrumental in the construction of Reks’ 2001 Landspeed Records debut, Along Came The Chosen, as well as his self-distributed Rekless street album in ’03 (which Reks revealed to DX he plans to re-release sometime later this year).

But it’s not all lesser-known producers supplying the sonic foundation for Reks’ rugged rhymes on his latest offering. More does boast a couple big names behind the boards, including DJ Premier, who laced Reks with one of his most impressive productions of ’08 for “Say Goodnight” [click to listen] from Grey Hairs, and once again provides the match to light the fire of Reks’ furious flow on “Cloud 9.” And of course the Executive Producer of Grey Hairs, Statik Selektah, puts in plenty of work on More Grey Hairs.

And while light on guest appearances this go-round, Statik’s other celebrated Showoff spitter Termanology is added alongside Skyzoo for a remix of the Soul Theory produced slow burner from Grey Hairs, “Money On The Ave.”

As for the content of More Grey Hairs, much like its predecessor Reks easily upstages his cash-and-ass contemporaries by skillfully weaving in to his rhymes a vast array of topics, ranging from discussions of politics to painfully personal revelations.

“I got this record, ‘Good Night, And Good Luck,’ where it’s more [of] a [storytelling track],” Reks revealed of one of his new conceptual gems. “I’m kinda like dealing with a relationship gone bad, and how it affects the children… I deal with relationships [on ‘More Grey Hairs’], [and I] still [address] the emcee topic, [which] is gonna be rampant because I’m just so fed-up with some of this b.s. that we’re receiving from artists nowadays… If they’re gonna beat us in the head with the bullshit, then I’m gonna beat them in the head telling them how weak their bullshit is.”

Following the release of More Grey Hairs, the outspoken orator is dropping a politically-minded mixtape with the aid of 1914, another Sunshine State production source in Reks’ rolodex, and the beatmakers behind “Long While” from Grey Hairs.

Additional mixtape collabos with Soul Theory and Statik are on Reks’ ’09 itinerary to surround the release of his official new studio album. Due sometime this summer, the project is currently untitled, but Reks ensures the eventual title he selects for his next offering of all-original material will not have the word “grey” anywhere in it.

“There will be no [titles and topics] that deal with the aging process any longer,” he said of his future songs and albums. “I think I found my fountain of youth.”

Hip Hop has a tendency to prematurely age its artists, and thus descriptions of the 31-year-old Reks have already come to include “late bloomer.” One-third of the M Diesel crew, alongside partners-in-rhyme Lucky Dice and Chi Knox (who Reks revealed have a surplus of material still waiting to be unleashed on the public), unfortunately earned that late bloomer label due to the fact that the less informed believe his 2008 release was actually his first. That perception problem created following Reks essentially going M.I.A. from the rap game for a five year span between the ’03 release of Rekless and ’08 release of Grey Hairs, during which time he battled the dreaded “local-itis” that tends to plague most independent artists at one time or another. Bun B Explains Plans for Final UGK Album

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Almost 2 years after his untimely death, Pimp C will receive a musical sendoff via the release of UGK's final studio album.

Entitled UGK 4 Life, surviving member Bun B is crafting the LP as a work that culminates not only UGK's 20 plus year history, but also the life of Chad Butler, known to fans worldwide as Pimp C.

"The new UGK album 4 Life is the final studio album from my late great brother Chad Butler aka Pimp C and myself," Bun said in a statement. "It is my sincere hope that it's a fitting bookend to the legacy of UGK and to the life and times of Pimp C."

UGK first appeared on the national scene with the 1988 EP The Southern Way.

The duo went on to have one of the most consistent careers in Hip-Hop with five well received albums: Too Hard to Swallow, Super Tight, Ridin' Dirty (Gold), Dirty Money, and Underground Kingz (Gold).

Their last album was the group's first #1 LP, courtesy of the Grammy-nominated, Outkast collaboration "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)."

According to Bun, the new album will be a fusion of the signature UGK sound they've cultivated over the last 2 decades.

"UGK 4 Life is an album for the people," Bun declared. "For all those people who have been with us from the beginning to those we've gained along the way, family, and friends, the street cats and the squares, the supporters as well as the detractors."

Jive Records has targeted UGK 4 Life to be released in Spring 2009.

Koch Records Changes to E1 Music, Preps 1st Quarter Releases

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Effective today (January 27), independent powerhouse Koch Records will now be known as E1 Music.

The initiative comes directly from parent company E1 Entertainment, in a concerted effort to merge their portfolio of over 100 global subsidiaries under one umbrella.

The company's urban division will remain in New York City, while the main office is set to relocate to Long Island, NY by the end of February.

The name change comes as the company plans a loaded 2009 with anticipated 1st quarter releases from D-Block, Alchemist, Juelz Santana's Skull Gang, Havoc of Mobb Deep, and Slim Thug.

"We are looking at the best year in our history," an excited Alan Grunblatt, General Manger of E1 Music, told AllHipHop.com. "We are just changing our name to E1 and will continue to change the game."

With a library of over 15,000 songs and 3,700 feature films, E1 Music President Bob Frank is confident the label will maintain its near-decade of dominance in the independent Hip-Hop scene.

"E1 Music will pick up where Koch Records left off as the #1 Independent 8 years running," Frank explained to AllHipHop.com. "These are very challenging but exciting times for the recorded music business. We have positioned the company perfectly so that we can continue to win!"

The new arrangement does not affect the status of artist and ByrdGang leader Jim Jones, who will retain his A&R position for the label.

RZA/System of a Down Bassist Prep ‘Achozen’ Project

By Ismael AbduSalaam

System of a Down bassist Shavo Odadijan and Wu Tang leader the RZA are close to completing the debut release of their embryonic supergroup Achozen.

The new band will consist of Odadijan, RZA, Beretta 9 of Killarmy, and new artist Reverend William Burke.

In recording sessions, the group has relied heavily on live instrumentation to craft their sound.

Between principal producers RZA and Odadijan, the pair has reportedly used only two samples on the entire record.

The group is also adamant about not attempting to recreate the late 90s and early 2000s "Nu Metal Era," popularized by such acts as Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Linkin Park.

"We have a product that I can go and see if I want to do this independently or if I want to go through major distribution," Odadijan explained to the Artisan News Service. "I'm not exactly sure if people are going to get the concept. It's a Hip-Hop concept record and right now. I don't know if the radio is ready for it. But I really am not releasing this, you know me and RZA just said it in a lot of interviews we want to help people with this. We just want to exercise brains, we really want to help kids think. It's a very positive record. It's a positive outlook on life instead of the usual negative."

Even with the unnamed project's official designation as a rap album, Odadijan further cautions fans from expecting anything that resembles the standard fair of mainstream Hip-Hop's current sound.

"This isn't a commercial Hip-Hop record, you know what I mean? It's got stories and it's an adventure. It's a musical experience," Odadijan stated. "I don't expect everyone to hear it and go 'Oh, I get it.' No, no, no. Each song is different on another tip. We recorded it in a room, without a vocal booth. I mean this is such a from the heart record."

So far, Achozen has completed guest spots with the GZA, Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist John Frusciante, and former Machine Head guitarist Logan Madar, who will also handle the LP's mixing.

At press time, RZA and Odadijan are looking to finish the album by the end of January.

Faith Evans Disputes Lil Kim's Claims Of Mis-Portrayal

Author: Andres Tardio

Yesterday, HipHopDX reported that Notorious B.I.G.'s mother was willing to reach out to Lil Kim regarding "The Queen B's" distaste for Notorious, the upcoming biopic about Christopher Wallace. After Kim was heard disassociating herself from the motion picture and claiming it was solely a movie based on what B.I.G.'s former wife Faith Evans and his mother Voletta Wallace said, Faith has decided to voice her thoughts on the matter.

"I try my best not to think about it. It's kinda sad," she said. "I got four kids, and I definitely don't have time for this type of shit. It's just sad. I don't know Kim's story like that. The part of my life that she was a part of, that's what was in my book. This movie is not relative to my book other than that there are certain things in there. This is not my movie. I didn't write the script. Any characters in the film had to agree for their life rights to be in the movie. I don't think I would have signed anything had I felt I was not portrayed properly. I think she had the opportunity to do that. I could be mistaken. I wasn't there," she told MTV.com.

She went on to speak about how she wasn't as involved in the flick as Kim claims.

"It's not like [the film's producers] are calling Faith to write something about somebody. It's based on a book that I think she participated in as well. I don't know what to say. I think that beyond myself, Ms. Wallace or whoever else she wants to blame, everyone who was around Big at that time has had some things to say about [her relationship with Biggie] in order for Cheo [Hedari Coker] to even write the book. He interviewed pretty much all of us. She's sadly mistaken. I'm aware of what she has to say, and that's fine. I don't know what to say. God bless her."

Notorious will hit theaters January 16.

Maino, G Malone And Huey Unite For Strictly Business DVD

Author: Jake Paine

Three of Hip Hop's rising stars united in Atlanta to release Strictly Business, a DVD that sees Maino, G Malone [click to read] and Huey re-interpreting themes from a Hip Hop film favorite. Reportedly inspired by 24/7, the video in rotation on MTV, and The Hughes Brothers' film Dead Presidents, Strictly Business follows the rise of the respective stars of tomorrow from Atlantic, Cash Money/Universal and Jive Records.

HipHopDX has posted a trailer in the video section [click here].

Directed by longtime rapper, actor and Hip Hop manager Littles, the Best of the Block production is set to release tomorrow exclusively on MixUnit.com.

"This is the first time three rappers from three different coast, with three separate major record deals, have formed an alliance to embrace the world. This DVD is a step by step visual booklet on how each artist rose through the ranks with rhymes and mere ambition. Unlike other DVD magazines that look like clips combined from all sorts of cameras, dates and times, patched together to combine for 60 minutes of viewer amusement, Strictly Business supplies substance from start to finish, with clear insight to how different each artist’s coast and hometown rap artist influences have impacted their own lives and rap careers."

Littles told DX that this venture will prove to be his most successful yet, and the future of promotional vehicles for buzzing artists and labels.

The video can also be viewed at HueyMusic.com.

Charli Baltimore Weighs In On "Notorious" Feuds

Author: Andres Tardio

Charli Baltiore hasn't been too public about her work or life since fans last saw her in Murder INC videos. Now, she has decided to open up about what she's been up to and more. With the controversy surrounding The Notorious B.I.G.'s upcoming biopic, there is new information coming out daily, and Biggie's former romantic partners have been speaking about their take on the motion picture.

First, Lil' Kim claimed she wasn't portrayed accurately and added that she wanted nothing to do with he film [click to read]. Faith Evans fired back, adding that Kim was in fact a part of it, since she was interviewed for the book which the movie is based on [click to read]. Now, another former fling has spoken up. In an interview with Yo! Raps.com, Charli Baltimore had some things to say on the matter.

"Lil' Kim wasn't Biggie's Girl. They just fucked," she said. "Kim goes out of her way to say she was B.I.G.'s girl. No, Kim wasn't his girl! Straight up, she wasn't. She benefited from the situation because she became Lil' Kim. She has a career and she's grateful to a nigga for helping her in that aspect, but she was never his girl."

Later, she added that Kim goes out of her way to say she was his girlfriend, which is what bothers B-More the most.

"If you're running around constantly saying it, you would think a person with half a brain would say,'That don't sound right!'" she added. "That's like Faith constantly walking around saying 'Oh! I was B.I.G.'s wife!' Like, we know you were his wife. You don't have to say it 100,000 times. So, I don't get into that."

As far as publicly addressing the matter, and her choice to shy away from mentioning B.I.G. too often, Baltimore said, "I don't want to profit off of somebody's death. B.I.G. recognized my talent. Obviously, he hasn't written any rhymes for me because he died so I'm not going to sit around and constantly talk about B.I.G. My first deal, that's basically what they wanted me to do...I was like, I'm not doing it! That's not what he would want and I know him. We were together for 2 years.

"Even though B.I.G. and [Faith] weren't together, you know, he loved her. And that's real talk. I mean he might have loved her, but that shit didn't work out. I never disrespected her to the level of saying anything out of pocket. Kim, on the other hand, I don't know what the hell she thought or maybe she's delusional as to what B.I.G. and her had going on. I don't know. I think the people who should discuss it should be his mother, his wife or maybe his best friends. So other than that, I don't feel as though nobody should be running around here claiming all this shit on B.I.G. because B.I.G. didn't really like none of them like that! So, that's just my opinion [laughs]."

She goes on to add that she was dating B.I.G. while he and Kim had sexual relations, but that she was unaware of it at the time. Furthermore, she provides details about something Kim did at B.I.G.'s funeral.

"I remember being at the funeral and Lil' Kim fell out on the floor and I was just like, 'Yo! What the fuck!' Like, Faith was up there singing and she was very composed and very respectful. And here goes Lil' Kim on the floor and she starts rolling around on the floor...I remember this girl Lil' Kim walked up and damn near jumped in the casket!"

In the interview, CB also spoke on her relationship with Jay-Z.

"We had a relationship that was based on a friendship at one point," she explained. "I don't know how Jay is now, but back then, I felt as though Jay was all about Jay...You have to have a mutual respect to accomplish anything, especially if you are trying to do business. Of course, everybody knows B.I.G. was trying to do "The Commission." It was supposed to be me, B.I.G. and Jay. When you're a female, people always try to pigeonhole you, and put you in a relationship with somebody you don't even have a relationship with. You could walk down the street with any dude, I mean you could be hanging with Choke No Joke and somebody is gonna say y'all fucking!"

Charli Baltimore has since negotiated a release from The INC. She says her focus has shifted from rapping to raising her two daughters.

Twenty-four year-old Inland Empire rapper Westside Bugg spoke about his recently released The Best of The West compilation to HipHopDX early Tuesday morning. Having previously appeared on albums from Layzie Bone and Suga Free, the Jake Records artist spoke about his album's significance in saying, "The Best Of The West album was put together to highlight what the west coast is all about right now. With a new year, and a lot of activity and hype coming around about [Dr. Dre's] Detox, Eminem, a new Snoop [Dogg] joint and more, I thought I could show off what the whole coast is working on."

The album features numerous voices of old and new from the coast including Numbskull, Saafir, Bishop Lamont [click to read], Jayo Felony and Kurupt [click to read]. In the heavy presence of guests, Bugg told DX, "This album was really meant to be a west coast showpiece, not so much about just me and my circle of homies. So the Jake Records team and I reached out to a lot of people to show the listener the bigger picture. Don't worry though... my new album is coming soon too, and it'll be all Bugg all day!"

The compilation was released December 23. Previously, Bugg released The Roach Motel.

Bun B. Clarifies Koch Deal; Still On Rap-A-Lot

By Tai Saint Louis

Bun B is refuting reports that he has signed to Koch Entertainment through a Texas-based indie label.

In an exclusive statement to AllHipHop.com, the Houston rapper explains that the news, published by several online sources yesterday (January 13), where a misunderstanding stemming from a forthcoming guest appearance.

“I do not have a label situation with Koch Records,” he told AllHipHop.com. “I am signed to Rap-A-Lot Records as a solo artist and Jive Records as the group UGK.”

The indie distribution powerhouse announced yesterday that it had signed five new labels: Nina Easton's IMG International/404 Music Network, Tenacity Records, Unruly Records, Greenstreets Entertainment and Doc Music Group.

Listed as the artist that would join Koch as part of Doc’s roster were Paul Wall affiliates Grit Boys, DJ GT, Lil Kano and Bun B & Middle Fingaz.

However, the UGK co-founder explains, he is not a member of the group Middle Fingaz, but rather featured on their planned 2009 Koch release.

“They are trying to release a mixtape from a group affiliated with me,” he stated. “I am only featured on the project. I have not been a part of any negotiations with this project. Hopefully this statement clears any misunderstandings.”

In early 2008, Bun B announced that despite longtime partner Pimp C’s untimely December 2007 death, he still planned to complete and release a follow up to UGK’s 2007 release Underground Kingz.

No word on when that project or Bun B’s solo follow up to last year’s II Trill will be released.

New Book 'The History Of Mixtapes' Coming To Stores

By Mike Winslow

One of the pioneers of Atlanta’s DJ scene has tapped a group of writers to help him recount what he calls one of Hip-Hop’s untold stories.

DJ Mars and his team are putting the finishing touches on The History of Mixtapes, a coffee table book due out later this year.

The collection of photos and essays examines how mixtapes have impacted not only DJ culture, but how the format helped spread Hip-Hop music as well.

With interviews spotlighting the likes of DJ Hollywood, Brucie B, Kid Capri, SnS, Ron G, Dexterity and J Period, The History of Mixtapes explores this phenomenon inherently created by the Hip-Hop generation and the stars who have emerged from the movement over the years.

“When you hear a publication write about mixtapes, they usually only write about certain DJs or who’s hot today,” Mars told AllHipHop.com. “But the mixtape game didn’t start as a popularity contest. It just turned into that.

“When mixtape culture gets written about, it doesn’t get covered in its entirety. I just saw a void that needed to be filled,” DJ Mars said.

To promote the his latest project, Mars has launched a new website celebrating all things old school and Hip-Hop.

HistoryofMixtapes.com offers visitors a chance to revisit classic interviews and performances, old school commercials, classic West Coast releases and even wrestling performances.

The site also showcases those DJs who have maximized their popularity, branding themselves far beyond the world of mixtapes.

Additionally, each Monday, DJ Mars makes one classic mixtape from his personal collection available for download.

“I want people to get used to coming to the site to learn,” Mars says. “I wanted the site to be a credible source of information, real esoteric. So I put classic stuff on there. Stuff you haven’t seen, stuff you miss.”

The History of Mixtapes will be published independently in late fall 2009.

Krumb Snatcha Enlists Pete Rock, Xtra P, Beatminerz for New LP

By Ismael AbduSalaam

After a five year hiatus, underground standout Krumb Snatcha will return in March with his third LP, Hidden Scriptures.

Even without a full length release in the last half decade, Krumb has remained busy with numerous guest spots with Guru, Pete Rock, Termanology, Tony Touch, Craig G, Ed OG, and Afu Ra.

Now an industry veteran of over ten years, Krumb feels as a sincere artist his music must reflect his growth as a human being.

On the Pete Rock-produced “Begins,” Krumb speaks on undergoing a spiritual death of his old rap persona and wanting to give the public a true offering of his renewed spirit.

"The vibe was totally different on this one,” Krumb revealed to AllHipHop.com. “I wanted to show everyone the other side of me. I feel like I've been walking in the dark for too long and I wanted to give the people my inner me."

According to Krumb Snatcha, it is important that today’s Hip-Hop start reflecting the social issues and challenges of the people it’s supposed to speak for.

"Music should give people a mood. Whether it's a dark one, or an uplifting one, it should explain the matters of heart,” Krumb explained. "This album was not to offend anybody, its sole purpose is to inspire. I believe with this contribution fans can see more to the artist than just skills, we are human too.”

The lead single for the project is the Beatminerz-produced “Feeling.”

Additional confirmed producers for the LP include Large Professor, Statik Selektah, Karimbo, and Nickel Plated.

Hidden Scriptures is set for release on March 10.

Chuck D Begins Movement for More Females in Hip-Hop

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Legendary Public Enemy front man and activist Chuck D has set a 2009 resolution to rectify the marginalized representation of females in Hip-Hop culture.

A swept aside issue in recent years, Chuck D argues that the lack of prominent women in Hip-Hop is causing the culture to move backward and devalue many of the progressive strides made by female pioneers in the 80s and 90s.

“In ‘09, my fighting the power is for women in Hip-Hop, especially groups, producers, songwriters, and label heads,” Chuck D explained to AllHipHop.com. “There are very, very few all women rap groups. Less than we had 25 years ago. I feel it is the next revolution in this 'same dude, same idea, same voice genre.’ I personally feel that the lack of groups on the male side has hurt, as well as production teams for the sake of soloists, across the board.”

The first step in the process is pushing the next generation of female emcees through SLAMjamz (http://www.slamjamz.com), Chuck’s independent record label.

The label promotes the all-female Hip-Hop collective Crew Grrl Order.

The 3 member group is currently completing their sophomore album, which features a pioneer and legend MC Lyte on the first single “All Bets Are Off.”

Even in his eagerness to help, Chuck D remains aware that any movement for females in Hip-Hop should be helmed by women themselves.

And, the celebrated front man is optimistic of his group’s potential to reach the women Hip-Hop music currently does not speak to or for.

“I'm putting [in] my all being the fact that women involvement should spearhead a ‘SHE Movement’ in the genre. And somehow I think there’s room for many more.”

Crew Grrl Order’s sophomore album All Bets Are Off is scheduled for release during national Women’s Month in March 2009.

Jim Jones Named Vice Prez Of Urban A&R At Koch

By Nolan Strong

Koch Records has announced that Harlem, New York rapper Jim Jones has joined the company’s executive staff, as Vice President of Urban A&R.

Jones will be responsible for signing and developing new talent for the Urban Division of Koch Records, which is the #1 independent record label in the United States.

“It feels good to know that the hard work has been recognized by the same people that have helped me get to this point in my career,” Jones told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “They recognize that I’m not only an artist but a person that can smell talent and be able to mold a superstar.”

Jim Jones’ solo albums On My Way to Church (2004), Harlem: Diary of a Summer (2005) and Hustler's P.O.M.E. (2006) were all released via Koch Records.

Hustler’s P.O.M.E. contained Jones’ massive hit single “We Fly High (Ballin’).”

According to Alan Grunblatt, General Manager for Koch, Jones' successes as a recording artist have helped put the label “on the map.”

“He truly knows what it takes to make a hit record. I am thrilled to be working with him for many years to come,” Grunblatt said.

The first release under Jones’ tenure with Koch will be the debut album by Juelz Santana’s new group, Skull Gang, which is due in stores February 24.

New singles from the album, “Body Like Mazi” and “Rock Starr” featuring Lil Wayne and Starr are scheduled to impact radio in the coming weeks.

Juelz Santana is also working on a new studio album that will be released in late 2009.

Beastie Boys to Reissue Paul’s Boutique

By Ismael AbduSalaam

The Beastie Boys have confirmed via their official website the reissue of one of Hip-Hop’s greatest and most creative albums in Paul’s Boutique.

Initially received as a commercial disappointment in 1989, Paul’s Boutique went on to amass a strong following due to the Dust Brother’s prodigious and intricate sampling techniques, and the savvy, pop culture heavy lyrics of the Beasties.

Ten years after its release, the album was certified double platinum.

The LP remains a masterpiece in the art of sampling, and due to the progression of clearance laws will likely never be duplicated.

The project preceded the genre altering copyright lawsuit of singer Gilbert O’Sullivan (Grand Upright Music) vs. Biz Markie (Warner Bros. Records).

Sullivan’s winning judgment required all Hip-Hop artists afterward to pay clearance fees and relinquish song publishing rights for samples, effectively diminishing Hip-Hop tracks featuring more than 2 samples.

Paul’s Boutique boasts over 100 samples throughout its 15 tracks.

The memorable final song, “B-Boy Bouillabaisse,” is a 9 section suite consisting of over 20 samples ranging from Bob Marley and Pink Floyd to Johnny Cash and Jimi Hendrix.

Jay-Z and producer Bigg D used “B-Boy Bouillabaisse” as the backbone for “Hello Brooklyn 2.0,” the bass-heavy, Lil Wayne assisted track off of 2007’s American Gangster.

Although Amazon lists the reissue for January 27, the Beastie Boys have not confirmed the release date, or what bonuses the reissue will contain.

The remastering of Paul Boutique’s will coincide with the album’s 20th anniversary.

Jermaine Dupri Out As Head Of Island Records Urban Division

By Tai Saint-Louis

AllHipHop.com has received an exclusive report that Atlanta-based producer Jermaine Dupri’s tenure as President of Island Records Urban Music has come to an end. A formal announcement of his departure from the position, which he has held for nearly two years, may come as early as Thursday (Jan 8).

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source close to the situation confirmed to AllHipHop.com that Dupri has in fact been terminated effective immediately.

The Island Records Urban Division was created within the Island Def Jam Music Group a short time prior to Dupri’s hiring in February 2007. In the position, he oversaw the label’s entire urban music operations, reporting directly to label Chairman Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Steve Bartells, President of Island Music and COO of the Island Def Jam Music Group.

Having enjoyed tremendous success with Island Records songbird Mariah Carey on The Emancipation of Mimi, Dupri’s duties also included providing production for the Music Group’s entire roster.

In April 2008, Island/Def Jam announced the creation of TAG Records, a new venture with Procter & Gamble’s TAG brand to be helmed by Dupri. The partnership created a new marketing module that allowed for new talent, like So So Def/TAG artist Q, to be cross-promoted in conjunction with TAG body sprays through print, television, radio, and digital advertising.

No word on how Dupri’s departure will affect TAG Records, nor the roster of artists on So So Def, which has been distributed through Island Urban since 2007.

Warner Bros. Remixes Relationship W/ Talib Kweli

Written by Cyrus Langhorne

After recent reports of rapper Talib Kweli and record label Warner Bros. falling out with one another, the label has now spoken on the new business relationship between the two.

Despite early reports claiming Kweli was dropped, the Brooklyn, New York-bred emcee recently hit up Allhiphop to debunk rumors that claimed that Warner will no longer work any of his artists.

"My label Blacksmith is no longer distributed by Warner Brothers, which means they will not put out Blacksmith future projects," Kweli told AllHipHop.com. "I still have a deal to put out Talib Kweli and Reflection Eternal thru Blacksmith/WBR.

No longer having the exclusive distribution to Kweli's Blacksmith Music label, Billboard reports the mega music company will still maintain a first right to turn down any Blacksmith acts. A Warner spokesperson says the company has the option to release music from Blacksmith artists such as Jean Grae, Strong Arm Steady and singer Anjulie.

Kweli himself is still signed to Warner Bros. as a solo artist and is currently wrapping his upcoming duet album with producer Hi-Tek, "Reflection Eternal: Train of Thought II." The set is due sometime this year.

On Talib Kweli's first major album Black Star, he rapped with Mos Def. That record was released on the underground Rawkus Records in 1998.

Death Row Records Catalogue To Be Auctioned Off Next Week

Author: Omar Burgess

The New York Daily News reports a substantial amount of unreleased recordings by 2Pac, Snoop Dogg and other former Death Row artists will be auctioned off on January 15. The material stems from the 2006 bankruptcy sale of Death Row Records' assets after Marion "Suge" Knight filed for Chapter 11 protection. Todd Nielsen, the Chapter 11 trustee of the Death Row Estate, tells the Daily News that the catalogue contains thousands of unreleased recordings.

Similar sales to Warner Music Group in February of 2008 [click to read] and Global Music Group in June [click to read] were never completed. Analysts believe the economic recession and the reputation Knight built during his run while head of Death Row could affect the asking price, which was previously at $25 million.

"It could be a tough sale," an unnamed source added. "Some people don't want to go near the catalogue because they think Suge still believes it's his."

While Death Row's immediate future is still being decided in the courts, the label's vaults of unreleased recordings have been a cash cow. Since his death in September of 1996, there have been at least 10 posthumously released albums from Tupac Shakur alone.

Q-Tip Tells Newsweek About Industry Rule #2080

Author: Danielle Harling

In an interview with Newsweek's Seth Walls, rapper Q-Tip [click to read] shares his opinions on the industry and "record company people."

The former frontman of A Tribe Called Quest [click to read], Q-Tip released his second studio album, The Renaissance [click to read], on November 4, 2008.

It took the Queens native close to a decade to release a second studio album due to a various number of label issues. Due to these label issues, Q-Tip's expected second studio album entitled Kamaal The Abstract was shelved.

"My thing is not like McDonald's, where you go in and get fast results," Q-Tip explained to Newsweek. "My thing is like a gumbo or a turkey dinner—you got to let it cook and marinate…I'm not a radio dude; I'm about the long-term. It was like that with Tribe, and it's like that now."

Even without an outrageous number of marketing campaigns, Q-Tip's The Renaissance was still able to reach the Number 11 spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart.

"Their model for getting numbers is broken," Q-Tip explained. "They realize it, but they don't have any solutions. They all seem shook. A&R departments need people who really know music. That way, they can make records that last a long time, because eventually it's going to be about the whole catalog selling again. Especially in these hard times, people want to make sure that their dollar is going to something that's worth something."

Now signed to Motown/Universal Records, Q-Tip recently regained the rights to the master tapes of Kamaal The Abstract and plans on putting out the album himself.

B-Real Readies New Album, Unveils New Single

Author: Andres Tardio

With a resume built upon hits, Cypress Hill's B-Real [click to read] is still not willing to part ways with the microphone. The new album, Smoke N Mirrors will reportedly feature a slew of guests including Snoop Dogg, Buckshot, Sen Dog [click to read], Young De [click to read], Damian Marley, Sick Jacken, Kurupt and Too Short. The album is said to have production from Alchemist [click to read], Soopafly, Scoop Deville and B-Real himself.

B-Real, who spoke with us in late November about Smoke N Mirrors, gave more insight on what fans can expect from the album.

"I tried to create an album that had a lot of substance as opposed to a lot of the stuff out there right now, just bragging about the cars, women, jewelry, money. There’s a lot of that shit out there, didn’t want to fall under that line. I wanted to talk about some things, provoke some thought, inspire and bring people to have a good time. What an album should be: good times, bad times, funny times and the meaningless times, because in life, there are all those things and that’s what I tried to capture in the album."

His single, "Fire" [click to listen] was just released. The Damian Marley-assisted track features Reggae inspired production crafted by B-Real himself.

Smoke N Mirrors is slated for a February 24th release via Audio Hustlaz/Duck Down Records.

DJ Premier Talks Rejected Beats, Recreating Illmatic Line-Up

Author: Edwin Ortiz

When Nas and Jay-Z albums had a production credit from DJ Premier back in the 90’s, fans could expect a classic record. Nowadays though, the collaborations between two of New York’s most famous rappers and Primo have been virtually nonexistent. Speaking with Goods magazine, Premier explained his feelings on being denied a beat, and what it would be like if there was a sequel to Illmatic.

After referring to a beat not used on Nas’ latest album, Untitled, Primo stated that Hova took the same route with his 2007 release American Gangster. “I did a beat for American Gangster and he didn’t use it. I’m not bitter, but my main thing is just letting me know you ain’t using it. If you don’t call me and just say ‘I ain’t using it,’ that’ll get me a little bothered cause [they] know me...Just say, ‘this ain’t it Primo, and I’m cool.”

Though it would be difficult to pinpoint DJ Premier’s greatest beats, Illmatic would definitely be a good place to start. Reminiscing about the way Illmatic came together, Primo couldn’t help but confess one his deepest desires; “I wish Nas would do an album again with just the original team.”

Naming a production line up that many could only imagine, Primo expressed his expectations for this dream project. “Me, Q-Tip, Large Pro[fessor], Pete [Rock] and L.E.S. If Nas could just do one album with all of us again it would be over successful because we all gonna come with it.”

Boston's J the S Preps Two Star-Studded Albums

Author: Benjamin Chesna

Boston rapper J the S, aka Jake the Snake, plans to take his rep to the next level this year by releasing the street album My Will along with his third full-length studio album The Last Days.

J the S, who opened for Kool G Rap, AZ, and Wu-Tang Clan as a budding emcee, believes these two new projects will bring his status in the rap game to a new level.

"My Will is a complete project to me," J the S said. "This is a collection of songs with concepts and direction, not freestyles about the same...It represents a segue for me into my upcoming album The Last Days, as that album will be a step into a new realm, into a more musical, different sound. My Will gives listeners a look into my world through the more familiar form of Hip Hop we all know and love."

The upcoming release, My Will, totes guest appearances from Kool G Rap, Saigon, B.o.B, as well as Emilio Rojas and Donny Goines.

Jake added, "My Will represents me as a person. I give myself to the listener through personal lyrics and topics that mean something to me...The songs also show my range as a person."

My Will is set to be released January 20, 2009 with The Last Days following in the early part of the year.

Jim Jones Charged With Assault Over Ne-Yo Incident

By Tai Saint Louis

A meeting with New York City authorities this morning (January 5) has resulted in a misdemeanor assault charge for rapper Jim Jones, his attorney told AllHipHop.com.
