M.O.P. Denies Beat Jacking

By Chuck "Jigsaw" Creekmur

M.O.P. has responded to rumors and accusations that they stole a beat from an emerging producer from Philadelphia.

Over the weekend, a producer named Kil sent out a mass email accusing M.O.P. member Lil' Fame, who is also a music producer, of stealing a beat submitted to the group on CD.

“It’s true I didn’t do the beat ‘Rude Bastards’ as Kil said. I heard it, it was hot and I rhymed on it. I’de never steal a beat, that’s not me,” Lil Fame told AllHipHop.com.

Longtime M.O.P. manager Laze Laze said everything is one big misunderstanding and that the group would never knowingly steal another person's beat.

"I understand the process of credits and turning in a record so I know that this is a clerical error [that] can easily be fixed. But Fame is hurt, being an up-and-coming producer (himself), he knows the struggle of making beats and having to almost give them away to be heard," Laze told AllHipHop.com. "We feel the pain of the kid in his crib, teaching himself how to use Reason, or his first attempt at an MPC 2000."

He explained clearly that M.O.P. "would never take a kids track without making every attempt to give him credit." He also stated that the rumor comes at an odd moment as the group's new CD is slated for released tomorrow.

"It comes at a time when all of our energy should be focused on more positive things like the release of the new M.O.P. album Foundation," he continued. "Nevertheless its our responsibility to speak on it."

Historically, M.O.P. has helped and contributed to the growth of a number of artists, producers and even video directors, Laze said, and the notion of beat-jacking is totally contrary to the legacy of the group.

"In all of our years, we have strived for the underdog, the unheard of producer (DR Period, Mahogany, Jaz-O,, Notts,) the up and coming video director (Hype Williams, Chris Robinson, Brian Luvar, Jessie Terrero). You see all these talented people were brand new, unproven prodigies when they began their respective works with works with the Mashout Posse," he said. "So it comes as a major surprise that someone would say we stole their beat and that we would address it with such disdain."

In an email sent to several sites, including AllHipHop.com's rumor section, Philadelphia-based producer levied his claim against M.O.P. and Lil Fame. Here is the email in full:

"Back in September 2008, MOP, Joe Budden, Termanology and Big Shugg came down to Sonar in B’more and me and my peeps go to the show. I pass out beat cd’s to Term, Joe and during MOP’s show I give it to Laze E Laze’s son (some young n***a) who’s the hype man. Now, fast forward to September 2009 and I’m listening to MOP’s Foundation album on my way home from work and when track #9 “Rude Bastard” comes on….it’s MY F***ING BEAT! Not the same sample, the SAME BEAT! Drum programming, sample, chops…the whole damn beat! Then my man Mills does the knowledge for me to see who got credit for the track on the album and it says “produced by Fizzy Womack”! So…I don’t get a check, I don’t get credit…I don’t even get co production credit! And I’m not looking for no “feel sorry for me” or none of that hoopla…I’m just asking for cats to let ANYONE who ya’ll know who loves hip hop to know who did the track so I can @ least get credit from my peers (hip hop fans and other producer’s grinding out there) for the beat. I’ve been grinding @ this beat thing for YEARS and for my first placement for a major artist to be a jack move…it just ain’t right…but it is what it is…like I said, do me this justice and @ least let the hip hop heads ya’ll know that the bol Kil from Philly gave MOP THAT heat… not no f***ing Fizzy Womack…"

Also, M.O.P. denies that a statement affirming the alleged beat jacking was confirmed by Lil' Fame.

"And the quote on the net is not from me I’m looking into who made that statement as me,” Fame told AllHipHop.com.

M.O.P. says that statement was not sent out by the rapper/producer and they don't represent such disingenuous movements.

Laze concluded:

"We spent a lot of years making our type of music on purpose for that part of society that doesn't get represented. We left labels and sometimes financial security on sometimes our code alone. So it hurts us that any one would call the Mashout Posse thieves. Even in the robbery days it was point blank. And not from the poor."

Roc Raida Cause Of Death Cardiac Arrest

By Ismael AbduSalaam

The family of the late Grand Master Roc Raida (Anthony Williams) has confirmed the influential deejay passed away from complications of cardiac arrest.

Raida was participating in rigorous training under Krav Maga, a self-defense martial arts system that originated in Israel and is utilized by both military and civilians.

The focus of the system is on using combat in “real-life” situations such as clubs and street corners, and emphasizes quick, vicious attacks to specific body parts.

Raida had been studying this unique style for the past two years, and his 15 year old daughter had recently begun participating.

A freak training injury occurred, causing Raida to go into cardiac arrest and pass away tragically at the age of 37.

Throughout his 25 year, Roc Raida influenced deejays worldwide through his contributions as a member of the X-Men and the X-ecutioners, and his recording work with Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap, Show & AG, and Busta Rhymes.

Roc Raida’s funeral will be held this Thursday (September 24) from 10AM-12PM at the Mount Neboh Baptist Church, located on 1883 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd in New York City.

The family requests that those attending refrain from using any video or photography. Roc Raida is survived by his wife Tyeasha and four children.

* Brooke Bailey * Blanca Lopez * Olivia Jones * Terricka Cason Apathy Previews New Album, Produces For Cypress Hill

Author: Paul W Arnold

Wordplay aficionado, and leader of the post-2000 incarnation of Connecticut-originated collective the Demigodz, Apathy spoke last week to HipHopDX regarding his soon-to-be-released sophomore album, Wanna Snuggle? The former Atlantic Records artist also addressed during his discussion with DX recent complaints by some artists of their business dealings with Babygrande Records, the label that distributed Ap’s official album debut, 2006’s Eastern Philosophy.

"Everybody takes themselves way overly serious nowadays. I was just tired of that, man. It’s cliché,” Apathy told HipHopDX of his decision to title his new solo effort Wanna Snuggle? “And so, we got that idea for the [album cover] image with the snake wrapped around the rat… For a snake to pose that question to a rat, ‘Wanna snuggle?,’ it’s just like [a] funny thing. People are gonna hear that title and say, ‘Oh my God that sounds incredibly soft.’ And then they see the image. There’s a line on my album [on 'Hell’s Angel'] that said, ‘Rats, I know a couple / I’ll catch you in the jungle / 'Cause I’m a boa constrictor muthafucka, wanna snuggle?’ So, that’s what it is. [The title] was based a lot around the artwork, and about really not wanting to take things too seriously and really having a title that attracts attention.

For nearly 15 years Ap hasn’t needed eye-grabbing artwork or eyebrow-raising titles to attract attention to his remarkable talent. Joining the Demigodz in late 1994 and making his official debut to the masses via Jedi Mind Tricks’ first full-length, The Psycho-Social LP, in 1997, it was with turn-of-the-century 12” solo singles, and subsequent albums masquerading as mixtapes like 2003’s It’s The Bootleg Muthafuckas! and ’04 follow-up Where’s Your Album?!, that brought Apathy’s brand of awe-inspiring lyricism to the world’s attention.

And now Ap is set to once again make the world take notice with the release of Wanna Snuggle?, a 21-track collection of classic ’90s-flavored boom-bap tracks with mostly Soul sample flourishes. Neck-snapping beats and rewind-worthy rhymes like the jaw-dropping lyrical beatdown “I’m A Demigod” are heard throughout Ap’s latest long-player.

Officially only his sophomore album, Apathy feels the release of Wanna will already mark his second classic full-length offering, as he explained to DX, “If Eastern Philosophy was more like Cuban Linx and Illmatic, which I was really inspired off of – and Enta Da Stage – then Wanna Snuggle? is more like Midnight Marauders or The Main Ingredient, along those lines. I do have some really eerie, hard, grimy joints on there, but a majority of the album is really smooth, chill, [and] heavy on the concepts and the stories.
Phonte joins Ap on one of the album’s more chill moments, the soul-sampling smoothie “True Love”. New Ap affiliate B-Real and fellow Demigod Celph Titled bring a far less chill vibe as they lick off lyrical shots on the classic Cypress-sounding “Shoot First”. Additional notable appearances on Wanna Snuggle? come courtesy of J-Live on the horn-heavy head-nodder “This Is The Formula” and Demigod Emilio Lopez on the smooth ode to America’s smallest state “Rhode Island.”

But maybe the most noteworthy guest on Ap’s latest LP is Chip-Fu of early ‘90s sensations the Fu-Schnickens, who surprisingly lends his crooning talents to the chorus of the arguable album apex, “Mind Ya Business.”

Turntablism Innovator & Deejay Icon Roc Raida Dies

Author: Jake Paine

Awaiting final confirmation, artists and associates including Da Beatminerz and Busta Rhymes have stated that turntablism pioneer and instructor Roc Raida has died this weekend. The New York-based deejay was most known for his years with the award-winning X-Men (b/k/a) The X-Ecutioners. This crew, whose legendary lineup included founder Rob Swift, Total Eclipse, Mista Sinista and Roc Raida (Steve Dee, DJ Boogie Blind and DJ Precision were also members at various times).

Last month, it was reported that the deejay was hospitalized as a result of a spinal injury. Although those reports have yet to be officially confirmed, the Hip Hop industry began a campaign wishing the innovator for a speedy recovery.

At 37 years old, Roc Raida won numerous ITF and DMC championships for his turntable skills. Although he is remembered for his jovial character away from the decks, Raida was an innovator in cut-throat deejay battles that often involved incorporating competitor's names into his mixes. Raida's also known for his agile spin-moves, and often making acrobatic cuts on the turntable, through legs, over the shoulder, and using his mouth to cut the fader.

Through his AdiarCor imprint, Roc Raida released over half a dozen CDs and DVDs, that were both mixtapes, documentaries and instructionals for aspiring deejays. His mixtapes, including Crossfaderz, and WHAT! 187 FM are also remembered for their comedic interludes, often making mock commercials for malt liquors, car services and Jamaican nightclubs.

On records, Raida was present for The X-Ecutioners' 2002 album Built From Scratch [click to read], released on Loud/Sony Records. Previously, the deejay crew was infamously recruited by Rick Rubin for his Def American imprint, but failed to reach an agreement.

With his scratching abilities, Roc Raida worked on dozens of classic albums. Highlights include O.C.'s Word...Life, Big Pun's Capital Punishment, Buckshot Lefonque's self-titled debut and Immortal Technique's two Revolutionary [click to read] volumes. As a producer, Roc Raida worked with numerous members of D.I.T.C. and Smif N' Wessun.

Last week, via Grandmaster Roc Raida's MySpace page, his family said this: "Anthony Williams p/k/a/ GM Roc Raida is in the hospital. His family thanks all of his fans for the well wishes and prayers. At this time please allow him and his family privacy to deal with the matter. The rumors and chatter is not accurate and we will release something more in detail at a later time. Thank you on behalf of the family and close friends."

The staff of HipHopDX mourns the loss of Grandmaster Roc Raida. It was a blessing to know you, and cover your work.

DX will keep you updated on more details.

UPDATE: HipHopDX has received a statement from Roc Raida's family, confirming the tragic loss. "Anthony Williams p/k to the world as The Legendary Grandmaster Roc Raida has passed away unexpectedly today September 19 2009. He is survived by his wife, three lovely daughters, mother and friends. Although he had under gone two surgeries with great success, was released to an inpatient physical therapy facility and was in great spirits the past few days. This morning he started to have complications and passed. The family asks for privacy at this time."

Raekwon's Entourage Shed Light On Joe Budden Conflict

Author: Salima Koroma

After a controversial incident between members of the Wu-Tang Clan and Joe Budden left the latter rapper assaulted backstage at a Rock The Bells concert [click to read], Wu affiliates are finally giving more details about what happened that night. A member of Raekwon's Ice Water entourage, who goes by the name of Hanz, revealed that he was the one who punched Budden, his reason being that the rapper was being disrespectful.

The beef between Budden and members of Wu-Tang, specifically Method Man, Raekwon, and Inspectah Deck, stemmed from comments Budden made questioning Method Man's position on Vibe's Best Rapper Alive tournament. Since then, the tension between the two has created conflict, prompting a confrontation between Raekwon and Budden backstage at Rock The Bells last month.

"To say something about a nigga like Meth is crazy," said Hanz, explaining to VladTV why he assaulted Budden. "Meth don't fuck with nobody and that's my big brother...[Budden] got punched in his face not only for being disrespectful to my big brother Rae, but he got punched in his face because he tried to throw it off on Meth and throw it off on Deck and all of that's family."

Many wondered whether Raekwon had initiated the assault, but Hanz assures that his actions were of his own doing.

"I'm not gonna sit here and say Rae made me do it," he admitted. "That was a spontaneous decision on my own because I felt like he was being disrespectful to my big brother. Did it happen because of Rae? Yeah, because I'm not gonna allow someone to disrespect my big brother in front of me."

He went on to add that, although Wu members reprimanded him for his violent actions, he was not regretful for what he did. Joe Budden and members of Wu-Tang Clan have yet to speak on recent developments.

"I remember the days when I had Kane's posters on my wall, CDs by KRS-One, and like everybody in New York, I used to record DJ Red Alert cassettes off the radio," 'Mega continued. "It is a dream realized."

In an interview with HipHopDX in January , Cormega explained the title of his upcoming album.

"It's basically I was born and raised in New York," he explained. "[It's] a New York-based album [and I'm] a New York-based artist. And it's like, we're down right now...I wanted a title that represented me and that represents where I'm from, because I feel like we're [not] getting the respect that we're due. Like, no artist should ever be able to just straight up violate New York 'cuz we've done so much for Hip Hop."

Now, the Shaolin spitter is gearing up to release the follow up to what many regard as a classic with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II. To build anticipation for the album, Rae has already released "New Wu" with the help of Method Man and Ghostface to go along with production from RZA.

9th Wonder Takes A&R Position At 101, 10 Album Deal

Author: Jake Paine

9th Wonder has been recognized for his acclaimed production work with Jay-Z, Sean Price and Little Brother. Outside of Hip Hop, the North Carolina producer and professor has produced hit singles for Destiny's Child and Erykah Badu as well.

Today it was revealed to HipHopDX that 9th has accepted a Urban A&R position through Arizona-based 101 Distribution. “I just thought it was a good opportunity to get my fans to go to one place,” the North Carolinian producer explains. “CD sales in stores are really going down, labels get in the way and I just thought of a way to put out the album for everybody to go buy it. It’s a supply and demand type thing. I don’t believe in a big, big roll out and all this whatever. I tell my fans to go get it, they get it and I’m straight. And I think 101D is the best place for it.” The union started when the distribution company worked with 9th on distributing his and Wale's Back To The Future mixtape.

In addition to the A&R position, 9th Wonder has agreed to use 101D to distribute 10 releases, reportedly due in the next year. Seven of the 10 releases will be volumes of The Lost Beats. These collections will feature rare and unreleased 9th Wonder instrumentals. Other producers including DJ Premier, J Dilla and Da Beatminerz have done similar releases on vinyl and CD.

Other confirmed releases include a project from Tyler Woods and an official release of Murs & 9th Wonder's third album installment, Sweet Lord.

“Every record sounds different – every one, and with Murs, it’s the same thing,” 9th Wonder explains. “We just kept every album different. It’s the same concept we have, but every album just sounds different. That’s all. And it’s soul music. I don’t really believe in re-inventing the wheel too much. I just believe in Soul music and that’s what I do.”

Jay-Z Responds To T-Pain

By Houston Williams

Jay-Z has responded the verbal lashing by rapper/singer T-Pain, who said "F**k Jay-Z" in Las Vegas at Club Rehab.

On the Ed Lover Morning Show, co-host Free asked the rapper about his feelings on the move by T-Pain.

"I made it very clear I wasn’t talking about him," Jay-Z said of T-Pain. "I think he’s talented, I don’t think he need Autotune to sell records but if that’s his prerogative. D.O.A. was just for the conversation. "

While T-Pain wasn't the target of D.O.A., he appeared to take issue with the song. "I said he brought [Autotune] back," Jay-Z said.

When asked about a possible generational difference, Jay-Z shrugged off the notion that he was too old to be an active member in Hip-Hop.

"Well, everybody has a birthday. They don’t have much else to say, they can’t attack my credentials as an artist or my lyrics as an MC," he said.

"Even still with all these guys running around...I still represent Hip-Hop...I represent the culture. When I have conversation with Oprah or Bill Maher, represent the culture."

Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3 hits stores today.

T-Pain Disses Jay-Z Saying "F**k Jay-Z"

By Houston Williams

Jay-Z's "D.O.A." has raised the ire of T-Pain and the singer has openly said, "F**k Jay-Z according to rapper Fabolous.

"Yo I'm at Rehab (club) in Vegas.. T-Pain is DJ'ing.. Sayin F**k JayZ, he old, blah blah.. guess its backlash from D.O.A," Fabolous said on his Twitter account.

T-Pain heavily relies on the Autotune technology, which was the topic of Jay-Z's "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)." The song was the lead single on Jay-Z's Blueprint 3, which is to be released on Tuesday.

Fab continued to tell what he was doing an also offered his opinion of T-Pain's shot at Jay-Z.

"So I'm here wit Rihanna, @richyungamerica, & @paulcainsf.. Drinkin some strawberry/daquiri's.. Not feelin the Tpain JayZ dissing.. Brooklyn!"

Ironically, the person that DJ'd after T-Pain immediately started to play "D.O.A." and then a full set of Jay-Z song, Fab revealed.

Fab said that T-Pain was still in the club during the Jay-Z set.

This is the first time that T-Pain has expressed this level of disenchantment with Jay-Z. Earlier this summer T-Pain joined Jay-Z on the stage during Hot 97's summer. He seemed pleased with the recognition in an earlier interview with MTV.

"That affected me in a great way, man. I made sure I honored him as a great song writer...that's like the best song i heard in a couple years, man. And it's great that somebody that important stepped up and vouched for me."

T-Pain has not commented on the matter at press time.

Crooked-I Refutes Any Relationship To Death Row

By Houston Williams

Crooked I had refuted the notion that he is in any way signed to Death Row Records, an assertion made by the new CEO of the iconic label founded by Dr. Dre and Suge Knight.

A comment by Lara Lavi, CEO/President - Wideawake Deathrow LLC, seemed to suggest that Crooked I was still on the label.

"…Everybody on the roster, those deals expired in the nineties. The only two really are Crooked I and Danny Boy right now; they're always really technically on the roster," Lavi said in an interview published on Monday. "We're negotiating with them right now to do a new contract signing because they both have current projects. Danny has an R&B album and a Gospel album and Crooked I has an amazing project with King Tech, supported by Sway."

However, Crooked I denied any new relationship and stated that Lavi only mentioned Wideawake, not Death Row, in his dealings with her.

He did acknowledge the relationship between the two entities.

"I cut ties from Death Row Records in 2004 legally. All my contractual ties were cut. She's [Laura Lavi] a nice lady," Crooked I told AllHipHop.com. "As far as Death Row is concerned, that's going backward in my career. No disrespect to her. She has the old music."

Crooked I maintained that the endured an extensive and expensive legal process to get off of Death Row Records.

"I have no contract with Death Row. I went through 11 months of court [to get freed contractually]," he concluded.

Crooked I recently released an album with his group Slaughterhouse that has been met by critical acclaim from Hip-Hop fans.
