Wisemen Member Kevlaar 7 Explains Taking Back An Unused Ghostface Killah Beat, Making Solo Debut

by Sunez Allah
The Detroit emcee/producer explains how his city makes it difficult to record when your studio is broken into 10 times. He also breaks down his just-released debut, "Die Ageless." Detroit, Michigan’s Wisemen are a movement that has amplified its Wu-Tang Clan roots to impart a theme of hardcore, soulful traditional Rap for the people. With emcee/producer Kevlaar 7, brother of Bronze Nazareth, finally releasing his debut album, Die Ageless, their movement takes a tone of immediate relevance and continues their effort to promote their Black urban lyricist movement that plans solos from Phillie, Salute, June Megalodon and Illah Dayz all this year. Kevlaar 7 is active in his Detroit community seeking to share his art and awaken people to the pathways out of their oppression. Rarely wavering in that intensity, he plans to release an all-produced Woodenchainz album in August and an LP fully produced by Bronze at the end of the year. For now, he takes a moment to give HipHopDX his thoughts on the real Detroit battlefield, his writing techniques and beat choices. HipHopDX: Immortal Technique recently noted he at least saw negative gentrification and the illusion of progress in US cities. All but Detroit. What’s the connection with that and all of the progressive Hip Hop music coming from Detroit? Kevlaar 7: Detroit is like a beautiful nightmare. I guess the artists are portraying beauty when they put it out in music form. It comes out beautiful because it’s so ugly sometimes. It comes off as a release and then I’m not gonna front, [Immortal Technique] is right. It’s fucked up. I got seeds. You always want your seeds to grow up good, in a safe neighborhood and play outside. It’s like it’s almost time to get away. If it was just me that I had to think about it’d be cool. I love it. With those to take care of and protect, you make different types of moves on some grown man shit. For real. DX: People have told me that 8 Mile is really just a barrier. It’s not really the heart of that gutter, ill street ghetto. Kevlaar 7: They're right. I have to tell a lot of people that 8 Mile is just the dividing point. On the South Side of 8 Mile is Detroit all the way down. On the other side are the suburbs like Farmdale and Warren. The south side of 8 Mile is Detroit and farther down south that center line it’s really hood. On 8 Mile you could get hurt on certain spots if you on the south side of the road but if really you want to go to some of the war zones it’s on 7 Mile. You also gotta think about the southwest, the number streets. That’s where Phillie is from. Salute is from the Diggs [Housing] Projects. That’s on the East Side, right off of 75. It’s crazy. DX: Where exactly was your studio? Kevlaar 7: Our studio was on Greenfield in the Grand River area. It’s more in the city. The farther you get in the city the more hood it’s gon get until you get downtown. In fact we had to get rid of the studio because we had so many break-ins. We was working on it. We had tool-boxes and building materials and we lost all of that shit in the course of about 10 break-ins. We brought it there on purpose trying to bring some positivity to the area. Now we moved the studio to Bronze [Nazareth’s] basement in his crib. We had to do that cuz niggas was doing crazy shit. They would chisel through a cinderblock wall in the abandoned building next door. Walk in through that chiseled wall and run in and out with everything. read more at : http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.19908/title.wisemen-member-kevlaar-7-explains-taking-back-an-unused-ghostface-killah-beat-making-solo-debut hiphopdx.com

Shyne Working On Documentary Film “Then, Now, and Forever”; Petitions To Re-Enter The U.S.

by Roman Wolfe Rapper Shyne is working on a new documentary about his life and times, the rapper has revealed. Shyne made the announcement during the premiere of Kanye West’s short film “Cruel Summer” in Cannes, France. The film/documentary, titled “Then, Now, and Forever,” will chronicle the past 10 years of the rap star’s life, including his incarceration for weapons violation, his conversion to Judaism, and his post-prison life. A release date is not available as of press time. In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Shyne revealed that he was working on a new album that would be released in July. He is also planning two projects; one for December another in 2013. “I have the Gangland street album coming out in July,” Shyne said. “And then I have another album coming out in December. You know, just music to feed the people and reestablish the brand. And then my official solo album is going to come out probably out in the spring of 2013.” Shyne, whose legal name is Moses Michael Levi, served nine years in prison over a 1999 shooting in a club in Manhattan, involving Sean “Diddy” Combs and his then-girlfriend, Jennifer Lopez. The rapper was deported to his homeland of Belize in October of 2009, shortly after he was released from prison. According to the official being petition circulated, Shyne, who is the Cultural Ambassador of Belize, has dramatically changed turned his life around. “The ban from America starts from three to 10 [years], so now it’s time to start making those applications,” Shyne told The Huffington Post. “I do a lot of work for my country. So I feel that’s important for the administration, homeland security and state department to respect that.” Check out the petition by clicking the link below: https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions/!/petition/grant-moses-michael-levi-shyne-visa-enter-united-states-america/ZNj1DN11 allhiphop.com

Nappy Roots Teams Up With AllHipHop.com For “Sh!t’s Beautiful” Mixtape and Tour

by JP DelaCuesta
Drae Jackson has announced that two-time Grammy Award-nominated group Nappy Roots have teamed up with AllHipHop.com to present their new mixtape, Sh!t’s Beautiful, to be released for free on June 27. “A lot of folks think Nappy ain’t made a song since Watermelon, Chicken N Gritz,” said member B. Stille, “but I look at this new project, Sh!t’s Beautiful, as a statement to those people. We’ve put out five albums and dozens of mixtapes since 2002. We are still touring and blessed to still be doing what we love — even a decade later, so really, sh*t’s beautiful. I’m especially excited because the project is absolutely free.” The Kentucky group, which features members Skinny Deville, Ron Clutch, Fish Scales, Big V, and B. Stille, will follow up their 2011 album, Nappy Dot Org, with the new project which has all members of the collective excited to showcase their changes over the years. “This project is dope because it’s shows the evolution of our Nappy Roots movement,” Skinny said. “You get the group breakdown, as well as a few features from some of our friends and label mates. We tour the country thoroughly and what we’ve found is that SH!T’S BEAUTIFUL and everyone deserves to hear our musical interpretation for free. Summertime nostalgia is the best feeling to have and this presentation and collection of work should embody just that.” Nappy Roots member Ron Clutch said, “No man brought us together, but rather the simple love and respect for Hip-Hop. So regardless of what this world may throw our way, we accept it and use it to our benefit… realizing that ultimately sh*t’s bound to be beautiful.” Added Fish Scales, “Right now I’m feeling very unapologetic. This album is a chance for me to do music that totally reflects me without any compromise.” In addition to the new project, the group will hit the road on May 31 and touch down in cities including Washington D.C., St. Louis, MO and Orlando, FL before coming to a close on July 26 in Vero Beach. Chuck D Offers Update On Public Enemy’s Two New Albums “Most Of My Heroes…” and “The Evil Empire of Everything”

by JP DelaCuesta Public Enemy will mark the 25th anniversary of their 1987 debut album, Yo! Bum Rush the Show, with the release of the group’s 13th and 14th studio albums, respectively titled Most of My Heroes Still Don’t Appear on No Stamp and The Evil Empire of Everything. Chuck D spoke on the group’s two new albums to Billboard: “They’re twins, fraternal twins – not identical, but they will talk to each other. The statement with these albums isn’t so much just within the content, but in the audacity of the release, just like, ‘What the hell? Two albums that bookend the summer? What the hell?!’ “But we know we’ve got a fan base that’s kind of acclimated and used to albums,” he continued, “because we were the first to come along and kind of bring a concept album to the hip-hop marketplace. So we oblige this year by doing not one, but two. “Maybe in the past one would’ve been an A side and the other a B side, or it would’ve been a long CD, but halfway into making it we decided to have two different aspects, one that dealt with the whole movement of people and the other that deals with the situation of everything coming at you at once, like a blizzard.” To date, features on the album are set to include Brother Ali, DMC, Bumpy Knuckles and Large Professor with more announcements to surely come closer to the first album’s time of release. Public Enemy will perform this Sunday, May 27 at the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Detroit, Michigan. allhiphop.com

Jeru The Damaja Talks Upcoming Solo Album, International Compilation

by Steven J. Horowitz
Jeru The Damaja says he's linking with Polish Hip Hop artists for an international project. Jeru The Damaja recently chopped it up with Montreality, speaking on a handful of subjects including his upcoming projects. During the interview, the Brooklyn, New York native said that he’s putting together a compilation of Polish Hip Hop artists collaborating with American ones and establishing an international connection. “I have a project that I’m releasing in Poland all over the world. It’s got some of the best producers and emcees in Poland, and some of what I think are some of the best producers and emcees in America and I’m getting everybody to come all together and kind of mash up on the record. I got my boy PF Cuttin doing something, I got a song I want to do with Monie Love and Heather B, I got a song I did with O.C., I got a song I did with Lil’ Dap. My man out in Poland, my man O.S.T.R., my man Peja, and a bunch of other dudes. That’s one project I’ve got.” He explained how the project is materializing, stating that American producers will supply beats for Polish rappers and vice versa. “What I do is have the American producers produce a track, and then I have the Polish guys rap on the American producers’ track, and then I have the Polish producers produce a track and then I have the American artists rhyme on that track, so that’s what I’m doing. It’s Hip Hop global. I’m trying to show the world that Hip Hop is not just in North America or Canada. It’s all over the world.” Additionally, Jeru is working on his next solo album, but progress is slow on the project. “My next project I’m working on is my project, my Jeru The Damaja project. I’m excited about that, because I have a lot of dope producers lined up. I don’t want to talk too much about that,” he said, stating that he doesn’t yet have a release date for the LP. “I want to come out with a quality project. I think nowadays because of the Internet and because there’s so much money around and people are selling a billion records, that people rush their records and I don’t think they sound that great.” hiphopdx.com

Former LA Times Journalist Speaks On Jimmy "Henchman" Rosemond, Tupac

by Sean Ryon The LA Times's Chuck Phillips revisits his 2008 report on Jimmy Henchman and why he still believes he organized the '94 robbery of Tupac Shakur. In 2008, former Los Angeles Times writer Chuck Phillips made headlines after using falsified documents in a report implicating Bad Boy associate Jimmy "Henchman" Rosemond in the 1994 attack on Tupac Shakur at the Quad Recording Studios in New York. Now, four years later, the Village Voice reached out to Phillips to provide his take on the story. Phillips explained that through careful research and interviews, he discovered that it was Henchman who allegedly hired two men to beat and rob Shakur after Henchman asked Pac to join Biggie in the studio. He said that the leader of the attack, Dexter Isaac, had written him in 2007 detailing the event and even saying he still had Pac's gold chain. "With guidance from street sources, I was able to determine who the assailants were and where they lived. I tracked them down in prison and interviewed them. Two of the men I suspected confirmed Tupac's suspicions about who had set him up in hand-written letters mailed to me in the summer of 2007. One even offered to sell me Tupac's stolen gold chain. According to the assailants, the man who ordered and financed Tupac's beating was a federal snitch and close associate of Sean Combs named James Rosemond, better known in Hip Hop circles as Jimmy Henchman." He added, "Days before Henchman's arrest last summer, his former best friend, Dexter Isaac, the convict who led the attack at the Quad in 1994, confessed publicly that it was Henchman who hired him to rob and pistol-whip Tupac. Dexter, who has known Henchman since they were 14, was the lead source for my 2008 Quad story. He is one of a handful of disgruntled street soldiers who taught me how to navigate the treacherous world of Jimmy Henchman." Phillips also addressed the issue of the fake FBI-302 documents that discredited his 2008 report on the shooting and ultimately got him fired from the Los Angeles Times. He said that that he believes Henchman got one of Phillips's informants James Sabatino and another friend of Henchman's to fabricate the federal documents in order to make his report look wholly inaccurate. He also added that he only used the documents to reaffirm what he had already learned from Isaac and other witnesses. "The 302s bore graphic design elements we had all seen before on FBI reports. I had no reason to believe they were fakes...Colleagues suspected I had been set up. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but something that Henchman's attorney said to MTV that week made me wonder: 'Any first-year lawyer could see that the FBI-302 reports which formed the basis of the Times' story were fabricated.' First off, the alleged FBI documents did not form the basis of my article. My sources did. Secondly, Jeffrey Lichtman, the lawyer attacking the authenticity of the documents, had nearly three weeks to inspect the allegedly fake 302s before my story ran. I had faxed the 302s to him prior to publication seeking a response from Henchman or him to quote in the story. If it was so obvious that the documents were fabricated, did he not have a legal obligation to notify his client, and me, before the story came out?...I still have no proof that [James] Sabatino made the phony documents, but if he did, it appears now that he did not act alone. Last year, an old friend of Henchman's signed an affidavit (which Henchman circulated to the media) saying he had helped Sabatino fabricate the documents and file them in court." "The only thing I apologized for was publishing purportedly fake documents. I never said that what I wrote was wrong. Someone may have tricked me, but the culprit did not undermine the thrust of what I reported. I would never have consented to publishing the 302s had they not supported what I had already learned in my own investigation. The substance of my article was accurate. Of this I was certain back then. I still am." hiphopdx.com

Details Emerge On Canibus’ Pay-Per-View Battle Royal; Headlines vs. Dizaster On June 9

by Jake Crates Famed as participating in one of the most historic MC battles in the history of Hip-Hop as he attacked LL Cool J with a lyrical arsenal, Canibus is back at it again as he headlines the “Fresh Coast Vendetta: Battle Royale“, sponsored by King of the Dot. Details for the event include its live broadcast pitting Canibus against an MC named Dizaster, who has faced some of the most well respected and seasoned battle MCs in the game. Some fans of rap battles might remember the historic battle between former Ruff Ryder, Jin, and Dizaster back in 2009, but this one is even more hyped with Pay-Per View on the bill. For those unable to make the live showdown, the event will also be available live via the KOTD Ustream channel in association with Pay-Per View. There will also be a chat where participants can interact with fans from across the world, live as the battles happen. The event is also set to feature exclusive interviews and two camera angles with a live editor on site. “You better come with some f**king bars! I don’t want to hear no f**king excuses when this sh*t ‘s f**king over; no excuses! This is your chance to prove yourself homey. That’s the great thing about Hip-Hop. That if you get blackballed, that if any stupid s**t happens to you in Hip-Hop, no matter what somebody says to you at the end of the day the power of the word is what remains. “So you can save yourself, because ain’t nothing going to hold me back from doing what I gotta f*cking do to you bro. That’s it, ain’t nothing going to save you. Nothing—see you in Disneyland bro!” Dizaster said, threatening Canibus. Gaining notoriety from a beef stemming from the “4,3,2,1″ track featuring DMX, Redman, Method Man and LL Cool J, Canibus made his mark on the game with the ”2nd Round KO” diss track directed at LL, after the two started beefing over a line in Canibus’ verse on the track’s original version. Referencing LL Cool’s famous mic tattoo, which LL clearly wasnt too fond of, the song ushered in the “beef,” and subsequently Hip-Hop history was made. Canibus has since been regarded as one of the premiere battle MCs of all time, and their duel is often remembered when recounting classic Hip-Hop battles. allhiphop.com

by Steven J. Horowitz The Alchemist touches on projects with Boldy James, Freddie Gibbs, Evidence, Curren$y and more. The Alchemist has been keeping busy, working on a handful of projects with an assortment of friends. During an interview with HipHopSite.com, Al revealed that his new offering Russian Roulette, which features samples from only Russian songs, will arrive on June 26th and that he’s unsure if it will be an album or a mixtape. “I’m still trying to figure out what it is. It’s audio, it’s a length of time, it can be heard, probably it’ll be seen, too. It’s pretty dope, it’s different than anything I’ve done, at least,” he said. While he said that “nobody” will appear on the project, he listed off a handful of artist who came to the studio for Russian Roulette. “Nobody, man. I did have some people, they came in to make sure that it was official. I had a couple of friends who came through to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind,” he said. “Danny Brown came through, he was buggin’. Action Bronson came through. Couple other friends, Willie The Kid, Doo-Rag Dynasty, a lot of friends. … A.G. The Coroner, Evidence, Fashawn came through, ScHoolboy Q definitely thought I was buggin’. He’s also bugged out.” Al also confirmed that a Step Brothers album with Evidence is in the works, and that it most likely will arrive by the end of the year. He denied that Re-Conversionalize is in the works with Curren$y, but that a follow up to Covert Coup could happen at any moment. Finally, he said that he’s working with Planet Asia, Killa Ben and Tri State on the Doo-Rag Dynasty project, and that he never got the chance to work with Freddie Gibbs on a rumored full-length. He explains that he’s “almost done” with an album with Boldy James, and that “it’s a stupid great album.” Watch the full interview below. hiphopdx.com

Prodigy recently revealed that he will release his new album H.N.I.C. 3 on July 3rd, with plans to chase the LP with a new Mobb Deep offering. During an interview on MTV’s RapFix Live, P revealed some guest artsts on the project including T.I., Wiz Khalifa, Havoc and Day 26’s Willie. “I wanted to use people that were kinda hard to get and also you wouldn't think that I would collab with them," he said. "You wouldn't think that Pee would have a song with them right now." He said that his record with Wiz Khalifa is titled “Co-Pilot,” and describes the track as “dope.” P said that most of the record was written while he was locked up doing a three-year bid. "The third one, I spent a lot of time working on it. I did my little bid, there years or whatever, and that's basically when I was writing most of this album," he said. "So, I got to really take my time with the concepts, the lyrics, how I want it to be, be really precise with it and really come up with something that can last a long time." Kendrick Lamar Talks Repping The New West, Black Hippy

by Sean Ryon Kendrick Lamar speaks on carrying the torch for the west coast and why Black Hippy has been so successful. Kendrick Lamar recently chopped it up with Yaya Martinez for an interview for her radio show in Phoenix, AZ. During the interview, the up-and-coming Compton rapper discussed what it's like to be at the forefront of the resurgence of west coast Hip Hop and whether he feels any pressure in the position. K. Dot explained that while he doesn't feel the heat to carry the torch for the west, he'd rather ensure that his craft is up to the standards he has set for himself. "You know the big difference why it's not even pressure? Because I always had this pressure from the moment I picked up the first pen and started writing," he explained. "A lot of people don't understand that, they'll be like, 'Man, you ain't stressed out?' I'm like, nah, because the day I picked up that pen to write, I always wanted to be the best at it. I never wanted to be number two, ever. So I felt like it was pressure every time I wrote my rap - it's gotta be the best rap, it's gotta be the best song, and eventually, it came around to be it's gotta be the whole total package. I always kept high standards for myself, so by the time everybody caught on, I had already been good." K. Dot also spoke on his collaborative work with ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock as a member of Black Hipppy. He explained that he thinks what makes the group so successful is that at the end of the day, they were their own solo artists before the group and that will ensure that individual egos don't come in the way of the music. He also added that fans can expect to see an album from the group in the near future. "I think the reason for most groups breaking up is because they don't come in the game having their own entity as far as their own artists," he explained. "They come in just being a group, and then at the end of the day as the years pass, you're gonna have conflicts as far creativity, personalities and people are gonna space out and wanna do their own things. So what we did, we wanted to solidify these individual artists first and give them their own sound and then come together as a group." He added, "The plan man, is ASAP, move and give the world this album. We've been working, the whole time we've been working…ain't nothing stop. Nothing really changed, the music ain't changed, the only thing that changed is the shows." hiphopdx.com

Busta Rhymes to Headline 2012 Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival; “And Friends” Announcements to Follow

by Seandra Sims After a successful 2011 festival in which fans were surprised by the appearances of A-listers such as Kanye West, Brooklyn Bodega has announced that Busta Rhymes will headline their 8th Annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF). Cash Money signee and 20+ year rap veteran Busta Rhymes is no stranger to the BHF, having made a cameo appearance as part of the star-studded “Friends” lineup to support his longtime pal, Q-Tip. Brooklyn Bodega representatives said that Busta Rhymes was a good fit for the ” ‘…and Friends’ concept, where headliners are carefully chosen to not only reflect the mission of the Festival but also to be honored by it.” “One of the most interesting things that kept coming up when we talked about Busta in the office is all the different ‘Bustas’ there were,” said Wes Jackson, Brooklyn Bodega’s executive director. “Busta to me is the skinny kid from ‘Sound Of The Zeekers’. To other cats in the office he is the muse of Hype Williams and the definitive artist of the video era. To younger fans he is the guy who killed it on the Chris Brown song. To purists he was Dilla’s biggest supporter after Q-Tip. “Just as Q-Tip was in 2011, Busta is the embodiment of what Brooklyn Bodega and The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is all about. Diversity, inspiration, longevity all fueled by an undeniable love for the music and culture,” Jackson added. About their headliner selection, Brooklyn Bodega was quick to note that Busta Rhymes has collaborated with Hank Shocklee, Q-Tip, Dr. Dre, Dilla, MOP, Janet Jackson, Diddy, Swizz [Beatz], The Fugees, Nas, and more. His recent linking with Lil Wayne and the YMCMB family has since made him relevant to a new generation of Hip-Hop enthusiasts. “People have been asking how we are going to top last year when Q-Tip brought out Kanye. I think we figured it out,” Jackson said. There are a limited amount of early bird tickets available for the 2012 Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival. allhiphop.com

Prodigy Says Another Mobb Deep Album Is On The Way

by Steven J. Horowitz Prodigy confirms that another Mobb Deep album is on the way. Despite their bizarre publicity stunt last month where Havoc allegedly posted tweets slandering his partner-in-rhyme, Prodigy says that an album is still on the way. During an interview with MTV’s RapFix Live yesterday, P confirmed that their LP will be impacting soon. “The Mobb is good, we're working on the next album still, steadily, making it hot," he said. "But in the meantime we're gonna put out some product for right now. The Mobb Deep album is not where we want it to be yet, so we've just gotta do something in the meantime.” Prodigy says he has plans to drop H.N.I.C. 3 on July 3rd ahead of Mobb Deep’s next album. He said that thanks to the duo’s partnership with Sony RED, they can make their own release schedule. “We've got a distribution deal over at Sony RED, so basically we run our own label, we run the company, we've gotta do everything ourselves," he said. "We make the release schedule, it's up to us what comes out first and if we want to change something, we change it. We've got a lot of control with this situation — it's like the best situation that you could ever be in, as far as [being] an artist and making music, this is great for us." hiphopdx.com

The X-Ecutioners Honor Roc Raida With Tribute Mixtape

by jakecrates AllHipHop.com recently spoke with Rob Swift and DJ Total Eclipse of The X-Ecutioners, as part of a series recognizing the DJ in the month of April. Representing one of Hip-Hop’s most skilled and renowned DJ groups, Rob Swift and Total Eclipse broke down the world of DJing today. The X-Men explained what the group has been doing in the aftermath of DJ Roc Raida’s passing, and how they are honoring Roc Raida’s legacy. Roc Raida, born Anthony Williams, died on September 19, 2009, from cardiac arrest, from an injury he suffered while training in Krav Maga, a defensive style of martial arts. “Roc Raida was one person that influenced me as a man’s man. I’ve known him since I was 18,” DJ Total Eclipse told AllHipHop.com. “Ever since I’ve known him, he has been a big brother to me, whether it’s something that I learned from him about the turntables or about life in general on how to conduct yourself as a person. To get respect, you have to earn it by achieving as high a goal as you can with passion and a lot of vigor to sustain it.” Last month DJ Rob Swift released a tribute mixtape titled “Roc for Raida” featuring fellow X-Ecutioners Total Eclipse, Mister Sinister and Precision. “My idea was to compose a mixtape that revolved around the music that Roc Raida made on turntables as far as battle routines and as far as the music that he made for artists,” DJ Rob Swift told AllHipHop.com. “A lot of people don’t realize that Roc Raida was an amazing producer, beyond DJ’ing he also produced. I wanted to showcase the music that he released that people really weren’t aware of.” The tape is narrated from audio gathered from a 1990′s movie called “Battle Sounds” by John Carluccio, that showcases The X-Ecutioners passion for DJing and the friendships that were developed through the art of DJing. “When you hear the mixtape ‘Roc for Raida,’ you hear in our voices just how close we were and how much we mean to each other,” Rob Swift told AllHipHop.com. Rob Swift said that the collective used music and DJ’ing to transform their lives and become world-famous. “It’s not like he was the most fortunate person. Growing up poor, when he first started DJing he didn’t even own turntables,” Rob Swift said. “He used to have to go to other people’s houses to use turntables and now he’s left behind a legacy, so my whole thing is to Roc for Raida for the rest of the year.” Fans can download the project at www.djrobswift.bandcamp.com, where all proceeds from the tape’s sales will go to Roc Raida’s family. allhiphop.com

by jakecrates Brooklyn raised rapper and one half of Black Star, Talib Kweli, has always been a rapper that supports and encourages education. Talib grew up in a family where both of his parents were professors, so its no wonder that he has always been one of Hip-Hop’s most cerebral and outspoken rappers, when it comes to political and societal issues. On Tuesday Talib headed back to college at St. Johns University to be a featured guest speaker. Kweli spoke about the anthropology of Hip-Hop and its impact in a global society. He also explained Hip-Hop’s impact on his life and encouraged universities to support more lectures like the “Hip Hop for a Cause” at St. Johns University. “It has such an impact that it behooves educators and institutions of learning to try and incorporate discussions in Hip-Hop,” Talib told the New York Daily News As a kid, Kweli excelled at reading and was a gifted writer. In elementary school, he started writing plays, poetry and short stories, but it was not until high school that Kweli turned to hip-hop as an outlet for his self-expression. St. John’s Associate Dean James Salnave said that students were adamant about seeing Kweli lecture. “The RSVP list filled up in a matter of minutes,” he said. “That was the quickest one so far.” Over 400 students attended Kweli’s lecture, asking questions until time ran out. Legendary NY Station KISS No More; Merges With WBLS

by Roman Wolfe Urban radio in New York has undergone a major transformation, as 98.7 KISS FM will merge with 107.5 WBLS. The merger will end 30-plus years of KISS, which is owned by Emmis Communications, broadcasting to listeners in the New York/New Jersey areas. “I extend my gratitude and deepest thanks to the many special people that created the memories and sense of community that KISS FM delivered for 30 years,” said Emmis’ New York SVP/General Manager Alexandra Cameron. “Emmis will be forever grateful. We are so very glad that a part of KISS will remain remembered through WBLS programming as they welcome beloved personalities like Shaila and Lenny Green.” In the coming weeks, ESPN Radio will take over Kiss’ famed 98.7 frequency. KISS is recognized as being the first commercial radio station in the United States to play Hip-Hop, back in 1983, with the addition of Kool DJ Red Alert. WBLS responded by hiring Mr. Magic and the legendary DJ’s saturated New York radio with Hip-Hop music. In addition to regularly playing rap music by future icons like Run-DMC, Whodini, Kurtis Blow, Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One and Afrika Bambaataa, KISS helped launch the career of media personality Wendy Williams. Emmis Communications, which also owns Hot 97, bought KISS in 1994. It switched to an all-R&B format in 1999. “WBLS and WRKS have been the voice of the tri-state black community for 30 years and we plan to merge the best of both stations to create a stronger voice to deliver the best in R&B music while also super serving our community,” added WBLS VP/General Manager Deon Levingston. All this weekend both stations will run programming celebrating 98.7 KISS FM’s role in shaping the urban/Hip-Hop landscape. allhiphop.com
