Tragedy Khadafi Released From Prison, Working With Capone-N-Noreaga

by Slav Kandyba

Veteran Queensbridge emcee Tragedy Khadafi was released from prison on June 23rd, months ahead of his anticipated January 2011 release date.

“They let me out early, which is a blessing,” the artist formerly known as the Intelligent Hoodlum told HipHopDX Monday evening. “The minute I got out I started working on a couple of projects. Working with a book project that I'm putting out and I started working with a group, one of the main groups that I'm affiliated with, UGP, Underground Professionals. I also started recording for myself as well as linking up with [Capone-N-Noreaga] to begin the process of recording my input for The War Report 2.”

Tragedy, a Juice Crew alum, who has been hailed by many as a key influence on Queensbridge Hip Hop, collaborated with Capone-N-Noreaga throughout their classic 1997 debut The War Report. The duo have stated that he would appear on the highly anticipated sequel and now it appears that the album can be completed.

“Basically from what was conveyed to me was they were waiting on me to come home so they can close the project up,' Tragedy said. “That's where I'm at with that. Aside from that particular project, I'm working on several projects and have been talking to a few people. I've been talking to Vinnie [Paz] from Jedi Mind [Tricks] to put something together, one of my team players, Phantom and [business associate] Scott Davidson, talking with several different people that want to do projects with me.”

Album Preview: Capone-N-Noreaga's "War Report 2"

by Jake Paine

Last week, HipHopDX stopped by the EMI Records offices in New York to preview the final mix of Capone-N-Noreaga's The War Report 2. To be released July 13 through Raekwon's Ice H20 imprint - the same team that brought last year's acclaimed Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt. II sequel, another '90s homage, this album hopes to recreate the excitement, energy and chemistry that added a critical chapter to the Queens Hip Hop saga.

The question in many minds is how closely the personnel between the June, 1997 release and the July, 2010 will be. C-N-N manager/rapper Imam T.H.U.G. makes an expected return, as does longtime affiliate Musaliny, both on the "Planet Rock"-ispired "Thug Planet." Busta Rhymes also returns, this time on "The Oath," a conceptual track that features mutual friend and colleague, Raekwon - and brief guest vocals from one of this year's most talked about stars. One superior veteran producer returns to the camouflage camp in D.I.T.C.'s Buckwild, who delivers one of the album's most-talked about cuts in "With Me."

"With Me," will draw many into this project. Although the War Report sequel does not feature Tragedy Khadafi or Mobb Deep, one key Queens representative does show up in Nas. Nas appears on "With Me," to deliver a verse that sounds straight out of his It Was Written mind-state, after notably going absent on OB4CL2.

The War Report 2 balances old with the new. Production work from Alchemist, the aforementioned Buckwild and H20's own BT will feel to fans as '90s beats stored away in a safety deposit box, awaiting such an occasion. Meanwhile, Cam'ron in-house producer Araab Muzik and Swizz Beatz' protege Neo Da Matrix both deliver very contemporary-sounding backdrops for 'Pone and N.O.R.E. Both old and new sounds alike are driven by low-end bass, with few topping Alchemist's album-opener, "Pain," which comes from subs-in-the-trunk era of music-making.

Lyrically, this album's subject matter is both true to C-N-N form, and stripped down from the duo's success and stardom. The lyrics are not rooted in bragging about money, legacy or success, but rather surviving the times. "Favor For A Favor" speaks to both the streets and the Rap industry, as a modus operandi to endure the tough times. "Bodega Stories" and "Dutches vs. Phillies vs. Bamboo" are evident of the group's New York street appeal. These are classic N.O.R.E. subjects, comparing how one likes to roll up, and what really goes on in one of the northeast's cultural mainstays.

Later on, the album looks inward. Treating the H20/C-N-N camps like a Cosa Nostra, songs like "Brother From Another" and "The Oath" focus on the street families and dedication within the group, to each other. Just as Channel 10's "The Argument" captured honest dialog between the partners-in-rhyme, so do these verses. "Live On, Live Long, Pt. 2" serves as a dedication to the then-incarcerated Tragedy Khadafi, who, as the group says, served both as a mentor and in making the '97 classic possible. The verses are honest, and inadvertently speak to the turmoil that's shaped the Queensbridge Rap community over the last 15 years.

Just as the case with Nas, fans will be pleased to see Raekwon appear on three songs within the album he's executive producing. Other '90s New York Rap titans The L.O.X. also appear, on "Bodega Stories" , and deliver masterful, short verses that show chemistry between C-N-N and D-Block. Singers Faith Evans and Avery Storm also chime in, on the two aforementioned contemporary tracks, "The Corner" and "Hood Pride."

The War Report 2 closes with the duo acknowledging various deaths in Rap. "Obituary" is largely talked and not in traditional verse, but the duo uses the Green Lantern-produced opportunity to mention names including Half-A-Mil, Killa Sha, Mike Beck, K.L. and Dolla, all the way back to Scott La Rock, Soulja Slim and Eazy E. The list is hauntingly long, but serves as a milestone to many names, faces and voices Hip Hop has lost.

Calling back to the times of a unified New York front, Capone-N-Noreaga's War Report sequel calls back to the glory and the imagery of the iced-out medallions era, and the album's presentation, guest-list and sound suggest that this is more than just a talking-point sequel, Ice H20 might be freezing time.

Cool Kids Speak On Label Woes; New Mixtape and Album

By Jake Crates

(AllHipHop News) The Cool Kids recently spoke about their label situation and their new album as they deal with lawyers in an attempt to work out some old paperwork.

The group dropped Tackleblox May 31st in collaboration with the L.A. Leakers and Chuck Inglish and Mickey Rocks have been touring and recording new material for their highly anticipated album, When Fish Ride Bicycles.

“So far we just keep making more and more stuff so we can just narrow down the list down and have the best 14 or 15 joints so we just trying to make the pile large as possible so we can chop off the fat,” Mikey Rocks told AllHipHop.com.

While the album is likely to be released in September, the duo was very eager to put out some kind of project, given their issues with their former record label, Chocolate Industries.

The issues with their contracts have resulted in a two-year hiatus from officially releasing albums.

“This time we were really trying to come back and establish what we started. We weren’t bullshitting, we weren’t taking any breaks,” Chuck Inglish told AllHipHop.com. “We were just in a bulls**t ass situation with our old label from the last two years and this really drawn out lawsuit, and that’s s**thas just been putting a damper on shit.”

At one point the tensions with the Chocolate Industries were so high, the group had even considered changing their name to avoid the legal implications of making music under “The Cool Kids” moniker.

“At the time we were just frustrated with shit, but it was a good idea under the Print Act, and it seems like it could get us out of the deal, on the name. We were willing to part ways with the name, but the way we felt it wouldn’t have mattered what we changed our name to,” Chuck told AllHipHop.com.

Although the group is fighting through the label situation, the two Chicago based MC’s remain confident in the music they are producing and are looking forward to finishing things in court so they can just focus on music.

“We are just trying to finish out this legal situation and show our fans how we are progressing. That situation should all be over soon though. I don’t know what some of the cats are going to do out here but its all a go for us man. I’m just waiting,“ an anxious Mikey Rocks commented.

Pioneering DJ, Kid Capri did a set chronicling Dre’s 20-plus-year career, while Eminem co-presented the Founders Award with ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams.

“Whenever I get one of these awards, it hits me,” said Dr. Dre, who became emotional when talking about his mother Verna Griffin, who gave birth to Dr. Dre, born Andre Young, on February 18th, 1965.

Styles P. Keeps Fans In Mind With 'Smokable' CD Cover

By Roman Wolfe and Jake Crates

(AllHipHop News) Yonkers, New York rapper Styles P. recently sat down with AllHipHop.com to explain the packaging for the companion CD to his new book, Invincible.

The dramatic novel was released on June 1st with a CD of music to accompany the CD.

And since one of Styles P.’s biggest hits is the 2002 song “Good Times (I Get High)” - is an ode to marijuana smoking- the rapper kept his core fans base in mind, by wrapping the CD in smokable packaging.

“It’s like the cellulose wrap, that clear see through s**t. Smoke in consideration, big brotha,” Styles P. told AllHipHop.com. “It's just in case you run out and you f**ked up. You know what I'm saying? You can go to that. Keep that in the cut."

The 240-page novel was written over a two-year period, in conjunction with author Nikki Turner and released in paperback form through Random House.

The book centers around “Jake Billings,” a record store owner who shoots two men when they attempt to rob him.

Billings is stabbed a week after being sent to prison and he doesn’t emerge from a coma for two years. When he does, he finds that life his changed.

His sentence has been commuted but enemies still stalk him.

“It’s getting a great response. Its selling so I'm just grateful and appreciative of what's going on," Styles P. told AllHipHop.com. “Its basically an action packed mystery I don't want to say [the ending], but I think people will learn that you can't always judge a book by its cover.”

Style P.’s Invincible book and CD can be purchased along with T-shirts and other merchandise at StylesP.net.

The Roots, John Legend Tell Fans To 'Wake Up!' On New Album

By Mike Winslow

(AllHipHop News) The Roots and John Legend have teamed up to create the new album Wake Up! featuring remakes of uplifting soul music from the 1960’s and 70’s

Both The Roots and John Legend were inspired by the 2008 elections and decided to collaborate on a single.

That quickly evolved into Wake Up!, which features remakes of songs like Baby Huey and the Babysitters’ “Hard Times,” “Little Ghetto Boy” by Donny Hathaway and “Wholly Holy” by Marvin Gaye.

"When these songs were written, people were more spiritually in tune," said Roots drummer/musical director Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson. "It was fresh from the civil rights era and there was a feeling of hope that maybe, yes, someday we will all be free. In 2010, not so much."

Wake Up! contains just original single, the track “Shine,” which was written by John Legend for the upcoming documentary Waiting for Superman.

Wake Up! will feature guest appearances from various artists, including Common and Melanie Fiona, who are featured on the inspirational album’s first single, “Wake Up Everybody,” a remake of Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes’ hit record.

"These songs sound so relevant now," Legend says. "On most of them, you wouldn't change a lyric. 'Wake Up Everybody' has four verses — the first one is a general statement, the second is about education, third is about health care, and the fourth is about making a better environment. No editing needed."

Wake Up! Is due in stores via Sony Music on September 21, 2010.

Drake Defends Mainstream Criticism, Addresses Rap Roots

by Andres Vasquez

Drake has gotten a lot of criticism for his pop friendly releases but according to him, he has been a backpack rapper from the start. In a recent interview with Los Angeles Times' Pop & Hiss, the former star of Degrassi spoke on the critiques he's faced and his history with a backpack.

"I used to be a real backpack rapper. That was my thing," he said. "I even say on this album, 'I'm just trying to kick it like Ali Shaheed and Phife Dawg / Because people really hate when a backpack rapper get rich or start living that life, dog.'"

"'Find Your Love' is the first time I've ever done something for the mainstream. 'Successful ' is a Hip Hop record. 'Best I Ever Had' is a real hip-hop record. It's a sample with some gritty drums. I'm rapping on there. It's not a Pop record. Coin me as mainstream or Pop, man, I make real Hip Hop records."

He continued, saying he is upset when people make these comments.

"That's one of the things that gets under my skin: when people say I'm not 'doing it for Hip Hop,'" he added. "Or that I'm not 'as Hip Hop' as so-and-so. 'Cause there's a lot of new kids that are coming out that are dope. Everybody makes it feel like they're so much doper than me."

Drake's latest album, Thank Me Later, is out now.

Cormega Performs With Immortal Technique, Styles P In Haiti

by Slava Kuperstein

Rapper Cormega took to the internet with a vengeance on Sunday (June 13) via his website, legalhustle.net, criticizing the lack of attention given to the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.

"[sic] good morning friends and everybody else im typing you from Haiti just got finished eating breakfast and I got on the computer let me say first that if you are Haitian and you dont contribute to Haiti any in any way you are a fucking SUCKER if you dont care about the people at least care for you family in Haiti people need help!" wrote the rapper, who went on to commend Immortal Technique and Styles P, with whom Mega was set to perform. "If you not Haitian and you are a human (the race that matters) then do what you can, a dollar sent from a multitude helps many! I want to shout out Immortal Technique (the realest rapper I ever knew) and Styles P (you already know) they both on they way out here to join me Styles is landing in a hour or so Technique shortly after we doing a show tonite and we going to communitys."
Cormega continued, lambasting Hip Hop culture's infatuation with conflict and material wealth. "Sadly the rap game and our own media is more fascinated with stupidity and ignorance beef etc so I didnt reach out to any body to tell them because they only care when I say something controversial but Im off that theres bigger fish to eat (i dont got to be fried).I seen some shit out here that just makes me sad but it makes me proud of my roots these black people are resilient they are finding ways to make due something I dont know if I could do but this is what I needed to see Im almost ashamed to wear jewls etc dont get me wrong i have jewls been had jewl since 15 but whats the significence when you just making some one else rich and your people are suffering I may slip and wear a bracelet or my chain again especially my dog tag because it represents the soldier but I refuse to be a house nigga for the upper class i wont be showing it off as a status symbol the smiling and bragging the rich people arent laughing with us they are laughing at us."
Cormega pointed out that many businesses continue to profit from rap, though the artists often get nothing in return. "Every nigga bragging about black card is doing a free commercial for a credit card company and if you aint getting paid for it you stupid. We rappers did free advertisement for cars, clothes, jewlery companies and champagne for nearly a decade bragging showing bottles etc did me to but not anymore Dom Perigon Moet etc never gave me or my people shit I used to hate Gap now I support them becuase they support us and converse does too any company associated with product REd looked out for people in Africa with Aids etc."
Finally, Mega, who also shouted out Brad Pitt, Shaquille O'Neal, Wyclef Jean, Sean Penn, SOBs and The Source, spoke on his experience actually being in Haiti. "The news shows us alot of things but you learn alot being on the scene i did NOT know people were living in tents and make shift shacks but the news did say that a million people are homeless so I give them credit HOWEVER I did not know that the US which is in close proximity to Haiti took 3 days to send aid and Russia Israel and others were there before us Im embarrased our country needs to heal itself from within and stop with this image project and we wonder why other countries dislike us!?"
Cormega concluded the letter by revealing, "I will give you more details of my trip Im about to get up with Herbie Love Bug (i didnt know he was Haitian). Peace and Love."

Rhymefest Takes On Late Night Televangelists' In New Video

By Roman Wolfe

(AllHipHop News) Chicago rapper Rhyme Fest will be dropping his new video for the single “Prosperity,” tomorrow, representatives for the rapper said today (June 14th).

The video, which was directed by Konee Rok, features Rhymefest making a statement on late-night televangelists who use religion to gain money and exploit people looking for some sort of salvation.

“It’s about televangelists and religious leaders that exploit people,” Rhymefest told AllHipHop.com. “One night I was watching TV and the televangelist said ‘Gawd, wants to change your life!” And it inspired me to write the song.”

“Prosperity” is one of 17 songs featured on Rhymefest’s sophomore album El Che, which features guest appearances from Saigon, Adad, Glenn Lewis, Phonte and Darien Brockington, while production is handled by Scram Jones, Terry Hunter, S1, BKS and others.

Rhymefest harnessed the power of the Internet to find new actors and actresses who are featured in the video for “Prosperity.”

“In order to get the actors and actresses for the song, I sent out an open call through Twitter, Facebook & Myspace, and lots of people came out,” Rhymefest stated. “My character Minister Mischief wants to save your soul and lighten your burden by lightening your pockets!”

Rhymefest’s “Prosperity” video will hit the Internet tomorrow.

Rapper Drake To Protest Offshore Oil Drilling With Hip-Hop Caucus in D.C.

By Mike Winslow

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Drake has teamed with organizations Green The Block and The Hip-Hop Caucus to help promote a cleaner green environment.

Drake is slated to perform tomorrow (June 13th) during the “Stop The Off Shore Drilling” rally being held at the 9:30 Club in Washington D.C.

The partnership between Drake, Green The Block and The Hip-Hop Caucus started when the organizations joined Drake on his “Campus Consciousness Tour” and witnessed the rapper’s commitment to a green lifestyle first hand.

Drake aims to educate fans about the importance of keeping the environment clean, especially in the wake of the BP oil disaster.

“Every where you turn, pollution and poverty are hurting our communities,” Drake said. “We can change that. Going green is the solution. I’m green on my tour, I am greenin’ block and you can too. It’s easier than you think.”

The collective will also protest BP and the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which started on April 20th and has been leaking over 1 million gallons of oil into the Gulf per-day.

So far, the leak has ruined vast stretches of coastal areas and marsh lands in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The Hip-Hop Caucus and Green The Block will protest the oil spill and the oil industry as a whole, on a new upcoming mixtape titled Stop Offshore Drilling!, which will be released tomorrow.

Drake’s highly anticipated album Thank Me Later is due in stores on June 15th.

Lil Kim Ready To Beef With Nicki Minaj: 'I'ma Bite You'

By Nolan Strong

(AllHipHop News) The feud between rappers Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj intensified last night (June 10th), when Lil Kim made a surprise appearance at a local Detroit club to address the matter.

Lil Kim performed a variety of her hits during a show at a club named Blondie’s when she addressed Nicki Minaj, whom she claims has ripped off her style.

With the help of a back up dancer, Lil Kim put on a blonde bob-weave.

“Yall know where this came from. I love when people copy me, that’s a compliment. But when you bust shots at me and throw pebbles at me like as if I don’t even exist and you don’t see me standing here, I’ma bite you. I’ma bite you,” Lil Kim promised, before launching into her hit single “Crush on You.”

In published interviews, Lil Kim has denied being the aggressor in the escalating war of words between herself and Nicki Minaj, who is now being managed by Kim’s former mentor, Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Lil Kim claims that Nicki Minaj has been taking subliminal shots at her over the last year, during interviews and on various records.

She also took issue with Nicki Minaj remaking her famous posters promoting her album Hard Core in addition to rhyming over Lil Kim’s songs, early in her career.

Additionally, in an interview with Thisis50.com, Lil Kim pointed to a tweet where Nicki Minaj said "f**k all the Lil Kim fans."

Nicki Minaj’s label mate Drake recently took up for her during an interview with MTV earlier this week.

"Lil' Kim is a G in the game. She's part of an era that's classic, that we'll never forget as young kids, me and Nicki,” Drake said, adding that he didn’t respect Lil Kim’s “beef” approach to her issue with Nicki Minaj.

Lil Kim shot down Drake’s explanation, pointing to Nicki Minaj’s unprovoked insults, in addition to a backstage incident in which she slighted the rapper, similar to an incident involving Hip-Hop legend Eric B.
.
“I don’t go off for no f**king reason, aight,” Lil Kim told the crowd. “If I go off, it’s a reason behind it. I spread love and I love my ladies. And I love for us to get along in the game. But you not gonna come in this game and s**t on me and take my s**t and run with the s**t. And I’m gonna tell these motherf**kers. I’m ready cause I hope they ready.

In related news, Lil Kim was recently named the spokes model for the Purple label 3 Olive Vodka and is part of the “Purple” advertising campaign.

Lil Kim is currently on a promotional tour across the United States this month, followed by dates in Canada, as well as Australia in July.
