Beastie Boys Reveal New Album Title

Author: Slava Kuperstein

The Beastie Boys have revealed the title of their upcoming album in an email message to fans, according to Billboard.com.

"Our new record that is coming out that we finished the other day is called HOT SAUCE COMMITTEE," said the message.

Currently, the rap group is set to hit numerous music festivals this summer, including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, All Points West, Outside Lands, and Austin City Limits.

The album, which is their first since 2007's instrumental, Grammy award-winning album The Mix-Up, will feature a guest spot from Santigold.

"It's a lot of vocals, a lot of words -- very wordy," said group member Ad-Rock of the album in October. "And it's political, depending on what you call political. You know, if toilet talk and fart jokes are political, which they can be, in that sense yeah, very."

Wale Roc Nation Deal Clarified; Headlines Rock The Vote

By Tai Saint Louis

Washington, D.C. rapper Wale has entered into an agreement with Roc Nation, the record label, management and music publishing company founded and helmed by Jay-Z, AllHipHop.com has confirmed.

However, contrary to early interpretations of a video interview, which has since been pulled from the web, Wale is not signed to the label side of Roc Nation, his manager explained.

Several websites reported that Wale had signed to Roc Nation, which lead many fans to question his status with Interscope Records and Mark Ronson’s Allido Records.

Wale has been signed since 2008.

According to the rapper’s manager Dan Weisman, Wale is managed by Roc Nation and his company Elitaste, and remains signed to Allido/Interscope.

Weisman would not offer further details.

Wale’s debut album, Attention Deficit, is due out later this year.

In related news, Wale will take a break from his heavy touring schedule for a special hometown performance on June 3rd.

The Allido/Interscope Records artist will headline the debut show of this year’s Rock The Vote Nights concert series with the support of go-go band UCB.

The concert, to be held at the 9:30 Club in Washington, will also feature performances by fellow DC artists Tabi Bonney and XO.

“Wale has been on tour all over the country for the past two months and we are excited to bring him back to D.C. on June 3,” said Rock The Vote’s executive director Heather Smith. “This is a special Rock the Vote Night for us and a chance to celebrate the 22 million young voters who went to the polls last November."

The June 3 show will be the first in a summer series which will include events in DC, Los Angeles and other cities, which have yet to be announced.

In addition to kicking off the Rock The Vote Nights series, Wale, Tabi and XO will have the honor of performing the official concert of the America’s Future Now conference.

Rock The Vote is supporting the event in an effort to insure that the young voters who turned out in droves for the 2008 election continue to get involved and be heard.

“A record number of young people went to the polls in 2008,” Smith explained. “In 2009 Rock the Vote will help ensure young people’s voices are heard throughout the halls of Congress and in their state legislatures, demanding reform around the issues most important to them like economic stability, clean energy and green jobs, and heath care.”

Tickets for the Rock the Vote Nights debut show can be purchased at www.930.com. Doors open at 7:00pm.

Stars Come Out to Honor KRS-One at Rare Atlanta Concert

By Ismael AbduSalaam

The Blastmaster KRS-One found out that pioneers are well respected in the Dirty South, as Atlanta emcees came out in droves to bless the mic last night (May 21) at the Midtown District’s Loft venue.

The Bronx legend was in town for his organization’s Atlanta Hip-Hop Appreciation Week, which runs until May 24.

Co-headlining the event was Duck Down’s Buckshot, who will be releasing a joint LP with the Blastmaster this summer entitled Survival Skills.

The show featured a staggering amount of local and national artists from the past and present: including Senor Kaos, Punchline, Killer Mike, Goodie Mob’s Khujo, Sparky D, Nappy Roots, Kool DJ Red Alert, The Regime, Stacey Epps, Clan Destined, Ness Lee, Bobby Creekwater, Stat Quo, MC Shan, and many others.

Shan, the sworn enemy of BDP during the famous Bridge Wars, showed full support during his former rival’s performance.

Now Hip-Hop elders and great friends, Shan gladly assisted KRS in a hypeman role during the performance of “South Bronx.”

The concert was also highlighted by a memorable 10 minute plus freestyle session where nearly every emcee present touched the mic to rhyme over beats from Dipset (“Dipset Anthem”), LL Cool J (“I Shot Ya”), Shyne (“Bad Boys”), 50 Cent (“Wanksta”), Ill Al Skratch (“Where My Homiez”), and Raekwon (“Ice Cream”).

Afterward, Atlanta’s Temple of Hip-Hop members presented KRS-One with a plaque for his social, lyrical, and spiritual contributions to the spread of Hip-Hop culture.

A listing of the remaining Atlanta Hip-Hop Appreciation Week events can be found HERE.

A detailed concert review with additional footage will be available soon at Planet Ill.

Slaughterhouse Signs Deal With E1 (Koch)

By Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur
Slaughterhouse, the lyrical super group comprised of Joe Budden, Crooked I, Royce Da 5’9” and Joel Ortiz has found a recording home with E1.

E1 is the label formerly known as Koch Records and houses a number of independent rap entities.

“We’re working on it. It’s a one-off [a one album deal],” Joe Budden told AllHipHop.com. “It’s coming very soon.” No official release date has been announced, but insiders suggest it could be as early as July. Budden previously revealed that he’s working on a solo album, The Great Escape, slated to hit stores later this year.

Hip-Hop aficionados have been fawning over Slaughterhouse for the group’s capacity to offer a mixture of traditional lyrics and contemporary styling.

Budden said that they were open to doing tracks with other artists such as Chino XL.

“There have been a lot of people telling me that if you all don’t do a song with Chino XL, y’all are buggin,’” Budden said, admitting that adding new members offers a new dynamic. “I don’t know about adding a fifth member. We kind of got a camaraderie and a chemistry going where, if Slaughterhouse is somewhere, Slaughterhouse is somewhere and it’s the four of us. Chino XL, I’m not mad at that. He’s top notch.”

The Slaughterhouse album has not definite release date and the title hasn't been revealed either.

Aside from his work, Budden will get surgery on his thumb Tuesday. The rapper explained the entire ordeal on his joebuddentv.com, seen below.

Jay-Z Parts Ways With Def Jam

By Chris Richburg

After more than a decade of providing a consistent string of hit albums and songs, Jay-Z is leaving Def Jam Records.

The rap mogul confirmed the amicable split Thursday (May 21). Jay-Z’s departure from Def Jam puts an end to rumors regarding the buy out of his contract with the iconic label, for a reported $5 million dollars.

During his stint at the Def Jam, Jay-Z transitioned from top-selling artist to music executive.

Jay-Z albums released under the Def Jam umbrella included In My Lifetime Vol. 1, Vol. 2.., Hard Knock Life and Vol. 3...Life and Times of S. Carter as well as The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, The Blueprint, The Blueprint: The Gift and the Curse and The Black Album.

After retiring from music in 2003, Jay-Z was appointed president and co-CEO of Def Jam by Reid.

The rapper’s time as president resulted in the acquisition of R&B/pop hit makers Rihanna and Ne-Yo.

In 2007, Jay-Z announced his resignation from his post as president of Def Jam when his contract was not renewed.

The rapper continued his relationship with the label as he remained on the Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam roster as a recording artist.

Prior to officially stepping down, Jay-Z released his 2006 comeback opus, Kingdom Come.

A year later, the rapper’s concept album, American Gangster, followed.

In 2008, Jay-Z aligned with Live Nation via a wide-ranging deal, record label that included the creation of the Roc Nation record label as well as albums, touring and publishing.

Skyzoo inks deal with Jamla/Duck Down Records to release "The Salvation" on August 11th

Skyzoo Prepping "The Salvation" : In Stores August 11th on Jamla/Duck Down Records.

Summertime is about to get even hotter on August 11th when Brooklyn-based rapper Skyzoo releases his debut album entitled "The Salvation" through Jamla/Duck Down Records. With the public already buzzing over his latest mixtape, "The Power of Words" hosted by DJ Drama and Statik Selektah and featuring guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Wale, Maino, Reks, EPMD, Big Pooh, and more, Skyzoo is planning to keep that buzz alive with his first album. He explains, "I don’t think there has been a debut album this cohesive and cinematic in years. The lyrics give you the ability to visualize everything being said over the beats."

Boasting an impressive list of achievements, including being named the "Best Lyricist" in the 2008 Underground Music Awards and landing the number seven spot on Hot 97’s poll of the "Top 10 Emcees Alive" (as the only unsigned artist on the list), Skyzoo’s track record should be a sign that listeners should expect top quality rhymes on "The Salvation." The album will be assisted with production from 9th Wonder, DJ Premier, Nottz, and Illmind, providing a top-notch musical backdrop for Skyzoo’s proven lyricism.

"The Salvation" will be released on Jamla Records, founded by Grammy-Award winning producer 9th Wonder, which is a sub-label of Duck Down Records. 9th Wonder’s vision behind Jamla is "straight forward, no chaser, SOUL music ranging from Hip Hop to R&B. The bottom line...no additives or preservatives. We are Jamla"

According to Skyzoo, "doing the deal with JamLa and Duck Down made sense in more ways than one. As far as JamLa, 9th Wonder was the main person who let me kick in the door to get in this game and build a fan base via our "Cloud 9" EP, so it made perfect sense to bring it back full circle. Duck Down has always held the flag for dope music - raw hip hop in its purest sense, and I’m glad to be contributing to that."

9th Wonder feels confident with Skyzoo being the debut project on Jamla/Duck Down Records stating "Skyzoo is established, and a very talented Emcee. We decided for him to be first because of that pure talent, drive and work ethic. He casts words in his rhymes that deserve to be studied by scholars. We believe that Sky has what it takes to make the first steps for Jamla and he believes it as well, which is important for him, for us and for our music."

Skyzoo’s debut album will join the list of projects he has already completed, including six independent mixtapes, an independent EP, and over 100 songs, which have earned him mentions in publications such as XXL, Scratch, Vibe, The Source, and Spin. He promises nothing but quality, reminding his audience that "whenever people get my mixtapes, they always tell me I’m giving away so much incredible music that’s worth paying for. In response, I tell them ’this is just the stuff I’m giving out for free, so imagine what I make for my major debut. Imagine what I make you pay $15 for."

"The Salvation" will be available for purchase August 11th, including various singles such as "The Beautiful Decay", "Popularity", "Fly Away", and "Metal Hearts".

The CD includes tracks such as "Back On The Map" featuring Maino, "Freshfest" featuring Wale, "No Pretending" produced by Khrysis, "Alphabet Soup" produced by J Dilla, and "When I Rhyme" featuring Talib Kweli and Reks, with production by Statik Selektah.

Raekwon To Joe Budden, "You Gotta Watch Your Mouth"

Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon has come to the defense of Method Man and warned Joe Budden about his recent comments, wherein he challenged Method's rap skills after he viewed the results of Vibe's "Best Rapper Alive" list.

The Staten Island rep weighed in on Joey's recent comments and claimed the Jersey emcee copied Mef's flow.

"I was hurt by Joe's comment," Rae explained in an interview. "He seems like a cool dude, but I don't appreciate him going at Meth like that. [Joe Budden] must've been feeling himself. You don't play a legend who, like Method Man, did a lot for hip-hop...Joe bit off him anyway. When you listen to 'Pump It Up,' real n*ggas know where that flow came from. I'm not a battle rapper, but I will skin a n*gga, anybody. And, in my opinion, he isn't better than Meth, never. You gotta watch what your mouth. Joe was out of character." (Billboard)

Along with receiving heat from artists, a website was recently launched called BetterThanJoe.com which aims to mock the rapper.

Featuring diss tracks going at Joe Budden, the site asks online readers if 'You're Better Than Joe Budden?' along with playing audio and video of legends like Melle Mel calling him the 'A** crack of hip-hop.' Readers may become members of the site and join in discussion boards on whether or not they feel Budden deserves his accolades. (BetterThanJoeBudden)

Despite the controversy and including Mef's name in who he felt should be ranked high on the list, Joe recently said he may have made a wrong decision.

"I will say it was in bad taste to single him out," Budden said in an interview. "There was a large group of people I was talking about, it just so happens that he was the best fit because he was at the top. I could have went on and on and the world would have been mad at Joe Budden not just Method Man and the Wu-Tang Clan. I reached out to him and tried to apologize for the bad taste not for what I said. I stand behind what I said wholeheartedly." (Forbes DVD)

Upon hearing an earlier interview with Budden, Mef responded to Joey's initial rant.

"I heard about the joint on the Internet man and my folks advised me to take the high road 'cause like yo, I'm a smart n*gga," Method said in an interview. "So, I knew off top this dude tryin' to bait me. All these years I've been putting out joints man, all of a sudden he pick this time to come out with his little comment or whatever, nah mean? Tryin' to bait a brother 'cause he know my album 'bout to drop...Every week he picks somebody else to mess with and I ain't heard nobody ever respond to this dude unless they on that same level as him. So as far as battle rapping, Joe Budden gets it in. I'm not a battle rapper. But I'll tell you this, I'll meet any challenge from any challenger." (Ed Lover In The Morning Show)

Tech N9ne Signs Brotha Lynch Hung To Strange Music

Author: Jake Paine

Two pillars of cult-followed independent Hip Hop are crossing paths. It was announced this morning that Sacramento Hip Hop veteran Brotha Lynch Hung is signing to Kansas City seven-figure sales titan, Tech N9ne's Strange Music.

The signing reportedly happened through Strange Music VP Dave Weiner, the same man who united Master P with Priority Records in the early '90s. "There’s an incredible synergy,” stated Weiner. “Every Tech fan knows that verse [“My World”] and is wondering what’s going on with Lynch.”

Brotha Lynch Hung found success in the early '90s with the controversial Black Market imprint. Distributed through Priority Records, the rapper has often been described as "horror-core," due to his frequent references to murder, cannibalism, and violence. Rappers including Snoop Dogg and Tech N9ne have all cited Lynch as major influences.

He is at work on Dinner And A Movie, his next album. Recently, Strange Music released Tech N9ne's Sickology 101: The Study Of Being Sick , which debuted in the Top 20 of Soundscan.

Reunited Pharcyde Speak on Plans, Break Up, Dilla

Author: Andres Tardio

After last year's Rock the Bells, The Parcyde was rejuvenated, reinvigorated and reunited. Looking to go forward as a group, the crew is now looking to catch that spark that made them so popular to begin with. Recently, some of The Pharcyde members spoke about this in the Los Angeles Times.

Although they still have not worked on a new album, they have done some shows together. Imani explained that it can be a step towards a new CD if the vibes are right.

"We were doing our own things for a while, then the Rock the Bells opportunity came around and it was cool trying to re-create the old vibe for those shows. We’re not ready to make another album yet; these shows are about us getting together and becoming compadres again so we can go forward in the future," he noted, before speaking on new material. "It’s a vibe thing. It’s nothing that we can manufacture inorganically. I can rap forever, I write rhymes all day, but the Pharcyde is about us coming together from different angles, the same story from different perspectives. We need to just chill and hang out and let songs come together when it feels right. Time isn’t necessarily important in that respect."

Taking the blame away from Fatlip, Imani added that it was a collective issue and one that may have been related to youth.

"People shouldn’t blame it on Fatlip. We were all young and we had success come at us really fast. We were trying to maneuver through the madness and we weren’t always making good decisions. There wasn’t one moment when Fatlip or any of us did something that specifically caused a breakup. It was a series of things: from record company politics to management to everyone’s individual egos. We’d done a lot of tours and we were curious to know what it would be like to make our own music," he said "At the end of the day we’re all artists, not Pharcyde employees. It’s always hard to keep four individuals on the same page, but if you’re supposed to come back together you do, and that’s what’s happened."

During their run, The Pharcyde also worked with Dilla before more many people knew him.

"We were flipping out and losing our minds. The stuff was just incredible and he told us that it was a kid he knew named Jay Dee," Imani added."So we told the label that we wanted to pay him $2,500 per beat and they weren’t feeling it because he was barely known at the time. We told them that he was incredible and that he was going to be huge so we should get them while the beats were cheap. So he produced about half the album and we formed an incredible camaraderie with him. It was like magic -- we’d give him some tracks, disappear for a few hours and when we returned they’d sound completely different."

No official word has been given as to when the group will work on music for a brand new album.

Raekwon Talks Nas, ‘Verbal Intercourse 2’

By Ismael AbduSalaam

As excitement builds over the verified August release of Only Built for Cuban Linx II, Raekwon is giving more details on the anticipated LP’s confirmed tracks.

While the teaser sequel track “Criminology 2” was well-received, fans have continually questioned whether there would be a re-up of the original album’s most lyrical track, “Verbal Intercourse.”

Nas, whose beginning verse is celebrated as one of the best of his illustrious career, has been in talks with Raekwon to bring back his renowned lyricism before the final tracklist is completed.

The Chef confirmed the talks exclusively with AllHipHop.com, and emphasized the importance of continuing the artistic bond he shares with many of his New York contemporaries.

“These are my dudes from back in the day, like Mobb Deep, Nas, Fat Joe, and Big Pun, God bless the dead,” Raekwon told AllHipHop.com. “You never know what’s going to happen. Rae’s still got to move on as a general.”

Rae admitted catching up with Nas has been difficult, especially in lieu of the recent events in the Queensbridge legend’s life.

Nas is finalizing a risky but ambitious LP with Reggae star Damian Marley, and facing the emotional strain of preparing for the birth of his second child while handling a high-profile divorce.

Still, Raekwon remains optimistic that Nas will make good on his promise.

“Nas said he’s gonna be on the album,” the Chef stated. “We’re still working on catching him. But if it’s not 'Verbal Intercourse 2,' we’ll come up with some new chemistry.”

Raekwon’s highly anticipated Only Built for Cuban Linx II is set to drop on August 11 through EMI/Ice Water Records.

The LP features production from The RZA, Dr. Dre, Marley Marl, Erick Sermon, and J Dilla.

Busta, Redman Fume Over Joe Budden Meth Comments

By Houston Williams
The war of words between Joe Budden and Method Man continues with new commentary from Busta Rhymes, and Redman, Meth’s rap partner.

Joe Budden has started significant conversation among the legends of the 90’s, in particular. Upon seeing a listing of the Top 50 rappers as provided by Vibe magazine, the rapper opted to editorialize his views on several. A bulk of it focused on Method Man and his ability to best him lyrically.

Redman told Ed Lover of Power 105.1 in New York that he wouldn’t have an problem with engaging Budden lyrically.

“I just laughed at it at first. I’m a Jersey dude and he a Jersey dude so he already knows the business,” Redman said. “I know my man [Method Man] got this. If he needs me to step in, I’m in. I’m already in it anyway. Its gonna stay on the rap level too.”

Busta Rhymes provided color to Redman’s assessment of the matter with Budden.

Busta Rhymes said, “I think it was a great disrespect and he might want to get slapped in his face for it. That’s just how I feel about it. I’m not saying that to be on no pro-violence thing, because that’s not where I’m at with it. I still think that there is a fine line between entertainment and being morally and principally disrespectful.”

In addition to Ross, CP Hollywood has collaborated with Youngbloodz, Pitbull, Hurricane Chris, Pleasure P, Ballgreezy and Unda Surveillance.

The Florida native is known for producing Unda Surveillance’s club anthem “On Deck.”

DJ Ave Mcree captured a buzz among Georgia residents while studying legendary turntablists Grand Master Flash and DJ Magic Mike.

Hollywood J is also known for his remix to Gorilla Zoe’s hit single, “Hood Figga” as well as his work on songs from Omarion, T.I. and Yung Joc.

The college-educated musicmaker isn’t the only Slip-N-Slide production team member to work with Yung Joc.

The Bad Boy rapper’s Gucci Mane and Yung Ralph-featured single, “Posted at the Store" was produced by Vakseen.

Citing music and the theory of art as influences, the beatmaker is also noted for producing Jim Jones’ “Pulling Me Back” as well as logging in studio time with G-Unit and Black Wall Street, among others.

In the coming months, fans can expect more Slip-N-Slide music from Trina and Ross.

DJ Khaled Declares 'Victory' On New Album; Talks Best of Best Concert

By Chris Richburg

Miami radio personality/executive DJ Khaled is preparing to work on a new album titled Victory, the follow up to his hit 2008 album We Global.

The creation of the opus is scheduled to begin after the release of Ruthless, the new album from rapper Ace Hood.

As for Victory, Khaled described the release as “something special,” while summing up the album’s guest list in two words: “Be ready.”

“It’s gonna be something new, refreshing, different,” Khaled told AllHipHop.com. “One thing that ain’t gonna change is me reppin' the people. The thing that I plan to pull off with my album is some ‘How’d he do that.’ Quote yourself as saying ‘Am I really hearing this?’ Saying to yourself ‘Wow. I can’t believe this is being done in an amazing way. I’m about to make the most incredible music that’s ever been made… Right now, I got this vibe going. I’m in a zone, man.”

Khaled’s current mind state is evident in the title of the new album.

The WEDR FM radio personality feels that Victory continues the pattern established on past album titles.

“I made y’all listen on my first album. I let the world know we the best on the second album. And We the Best got so big that we turned into being global. So I let you know we global,” said Khaled. “And now the new album is called Victory. It’s time to celebrate the wins.”

Despite a busy schedule that includes time in the studio and on the radio, DJ Khaled is taking time off to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend in Miami as part of this year’s Best of the Best International Music Festival.

The fifth annual event, which will take place May 24 at Bicentennial Park, will showcase a variety of hip-hop and reggae stars.

In addition to Khaled, performers taking the stage include Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Mavado, Cocoa Tea, Serani, Wayne Wonder, Elephant Man, Matterhorn, Capleton, Jabba and Ras Penco.

Grammy-winning rapper turned singer T-Pain will host the event.

More than 20,000 people are expected to attend the Best of the Best festival, which Khaled feels will be even better than last year’s event.

“This year is gonna be crazy. Every year has been crazy, but this year is gonna be crazier. We got more artists added to the bill. Jeezy is gonna be there as well as Bounty Killer and Movado ... It’s the best of both worlds. It’s the best of Hip-Hop and the best of reggae,” Khaled told AllHipHop.com, while noting how much of a draw the festival’s ability to attract domestic and international fans.

“This year, the hype on it is getting crazy. People from the UK and England and the whole world is flying down. New York. It’s the whole world coming to Miami to be part of the show,” Khaled said.

Gates for the Best of the Best festival will open at 1 p.m.

The event’s first performer will hit the stage at 1:30 p.m.

The Best of the Best International Music Festival official after party will follow at Bongos nightclub and restaurant.

Joe Budden Vs Method Man Heats Up

By Houston Williams
Lyrically, Joe Budden thinks that he’s Method Man’s superior and the notion has taken on new heights as the New Jersey rapper conducted an interview this morning.

"I will cut that dudes head off his shoulders,” Budden said on the Ed Lover Morning Show. Budden wasn’t talking physically, but his verbage spoke volumes about how he feels he ranks above his Wu Tank counterpart.

"Method Man's not going to be able to survive [a lyrical battle],” Budden continued. “Its gonna be hard for him."

Budden told Ed Lover and Free of Power 105.1 in New York that he had respect for Meth and didn’t want to see anything turn violent.

“That is not knock against Method Man, Wu Tang, Redman – since he wanted to jump in too. I mean, I can’t be from Jersey and not love Redman,” Budden said.

The whole matter started after Vibe.com listed their Top 50 rappers in a tourney-style event to determine the best artist. Budden questioned the credibility of the list and the inclusion of several acts.

Method Man responded quickly by calling into the radio station.

“My folks advised me to take the high road. I’m a smart n***a so I know off top this dude is trying to bait me,” Meth said. “He been on medication since he was in junior high school. The n***a is certified crazy.”

“Every week he picks somebody to mess with and I ain’t really heard nobody respond to this dude except other dudes that’s on that same level as him.”

Meth did admit that Joe Budden is a worthy battle rapper, but said he would not be backing down.

“As far as battle rapping, by all means, Joe Budden gets it in. He’s a battle rapper. I ain’t never been known for battle rapping,” Meth said. “But I tell you this, I meet any challenge from any challenger.”

“On a lighter, note son can’t mess with me.” Meth said. “Stop being a cry baby.”

Method Man offered two options.

He said he wanted to see do a song with Joe Budden and let the fans decided who is best. He also proposed that he and Budden meet “face to face.”

Nas and Pete Rock, Working On New Music

By Chuck "Jigsaw" Creekmur

Hip-Hop lovers can rejoice: Nas and producer Pete Rock are working on music again.

Together Nas and Pete Rock orchestrated some of the most meaningful, prolific music to in the 90's when they collaborated on Nas' seminal album Illmatic, which was released 15 years ago this year.

"The World Is Yours" was an inspirational beacon to Hip-Hop fans during the period. Pete explained how things came to fruition. "I got a call from [Nas] one day. I was very excited when I saw that he called. I called him back and we conversed a bit, through the text, got him on the phone and we kicked it," Pete Rock told AllHipHop.com. "I sent music to him. And I'll just continue to send him music, you know? Whatever he likes, he'll probably put to the side. But, I'm real excited about working with him."

The pair haven’t work together since Illmatic, even though they had great success as a team.

To this day, Pete Rock says he doesn't know why he and Nas didn't continue to collaborate in any fashion since the popularity of Illmatic.

He's not necessarily looking for answers either.

"I think it was a lot of situations [that caused the break off], but you know, but right now, I don't give a damn. That was the past. You know, I always wanted to get down to the bottom of it, to see what the problem was," Pete said. "Whatever it was, I know it was a lie. I always asked that question like ‘Why isn't he working with me,’” Pete said. "Other than that, I'm just happy that he reached out. Watch out. The beats are coming crazy."

Pete has stayed busy working on the recent Red & Meth Song, "A-Yo" and his own solo material.

The New York-based producer has also relaunched his label Soul Brother Recordings and will be releasing new artists in the future.

Critically acclaimed turntablist DJ Qbert has launched the first ever video-based online DJ school.

Now known as QSU (Qbert Scratch University), the San Francisco native brings over 20-years of experience to the online curriculum.

The courses range from basic cutting techniques, to advance classes detailing “battle” strategies to be used in competition with rival DJs.

Partnered in the project with Qbert is ArtistWorks, Inc, a company that develops Internet-based businesses for musicians by incorporating cutting edge distance learning and video technology.

The group utilizes a proprietary VMS (Video/Media Management System) for students to send their practice sessions over to Qbert.

From there, the QSU founder posts a detailed video response.

Students will have personal pages for regular peer to peer interaction for study groups and networking.

In addition, Qbert will use his network of industry contacts to have guest DJs and other professionals offer their insight into the music business, and the role of the 21st century DJ.

With scratching/cutting being a worldwide staple of Hip-Hop culture, Qbert explained to AllHipHop.com that he’s proud to have a platform to bring all aspiring DJs together.

"It's cool that scratching has so many fans around the world and we can all be in one place now and learn from each other no matter where we live,” he stated.

Jay-Z Concert Loses Nearly $1 Million

Ismael AbduSalaam
Jay-Z’s superstar presence was not enough to make a recent Arizona Stadium concert a success, as event promoters confirmed the show posted a loss of $917,000.

The Last Smash Platinum Bash was organized by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA), who paid Jay-Z $750,000 to co-headline the event with pop star Kelly Clarkson.

The strange pairing was not enough to entice potential concertgoers.

Arizona Stadium, which is known for football, had not hosted a concert in 32 years.

According to estimates, the student union gave away over 4000 tickets in hopes of securing valuable marketing deals with newspapers and radio stations.

Despite these issues, ASUA president Tommy Bruce blamed the failure on the Recession.

“Nobody predicted the economy would be the way it is now last May,” he told the Arizona Daily Star.

In total, the concert cost $1,420,000, while tickets and merchandise purchases only posted $503,502.

The loss forced the ASUA to empty its$350,000 cash reserve to cover the debt.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, the Arizona University’s bookstore will assist the ASUA in paying off the debt through another established emergency fund.

As a consequence, the UA Bookstore organization will also lower its contributions to the student group by $570,000 over the next 5 years.

At press time, Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 is tentatively aimed at a September 2009 release date.
