Black Thought Confirms New The Roots Album Is In The Works + Says Band Laid The Foundation For Neo-Soul

by Yohance Kyles
Legendary Hip Hop crew The Roots has released 11 albums since 1993 starting with the group’s debut Organix. According to frontman Black Thought, the house band for The Tonight Show is currently working on their next LP. He recently spoke with Consequence of Sound.

“I feel like we are embarking on a new chapter in our lives and in our careers, so it’s time to either make more music or to stop making music, and we’re not going to stop. Music is on the horizon,” said Black Thought.

While The Roots prepare to drop another project in the near future, the Philadelphia natives’ discography already includes collaborations with some of the most prominent music figures of the last 25 years. That list includes soul singers like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and Cody ChesnuTT. Black Thought touches on how his band helped usher in the 1990’s sub-genre of R&B known as “Neo-Soul.”

“I feel like what we did with Erykah in the late ‘90s was a moment in time, but it paved the way for other artists,” stated B.T. “I feel like the groundwork we laid was the foundation for what became neo-soul. It was a movement. I feel like that has come and gone and what remains in its wake is just the best parts of it.”

Tupac Film "7Dayz" To Chronicle Rapper's Last Week Alive

by Christopher Harris

The goal for the "7Dayz" campaign is set at $300,000
Director Gobi Rahimi has just launched an Indiegogo campaign seeking funding to help create a film based on Tupac’s last seven days alive.

The film, 7Dayz, chronicles the week 'Pac spent in an induced coma after he was shot on September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas. He died seven days later.

Rahimi directed several music videos for Tupac, including “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” “Hit Em Up” and “To Live & Die in L.A.” He also wrote the letter that Tupac signed in which the rapper fired Suge Knight and his lawyer, David Kenner.

“I was waiting for Tupac at club 662 in Las Vegas after the Mike Tyson fight on September 7, 1996,” Rahimi wrote via the Indiegogo site. “Soon after, I was informed by rapper Nate Dogg that Tupac and Suge Knight had been shot and taken to University Hospital. I immediately rushed there to be by Tupac’s side. This was the first of an emotional 7 days that I sat guard over Tupac who was in an induced coma, riding the line between life and death. 7Dayz is the story of my experience at the hospital amidst death threats, undercover FBI informants and an uncooperative Police Department.”
The goal for the campaign is set at $300,000 to cover the cost of production, shooting, talent, insurance, and equipment. For $20 contributors can earn a limited edition 7Dayz bandana. $35 donors receive a 7Dayz DVD, a digital copy of the script and a Tupac photo ebook.

At press time, the film has raised more than $4,300.

Killer Mike Gives Hip Hop History Lesson On "Real Time With Bill Maher"

by Jay Balfour

"Hip Hop, as a entity, was started in the late '60s, early '70s," Killer Mike says.
Killer Mike appeared in a much-anticipated segment of Real Time with Bill Maher last night and kept up his streak of speaking passionately about the culture he's identified with for much of his life.
When asked how he'd respond to people who

He went on to explain the development of Hip Hop as a culture and how its roots are in nonviolence and community organizing before rattling off other sources of serious violence in today's society.
"Hip Hop, as an entity, was started in the late '60s, early '70s," he said. "All these kids that were kind of the fallout kids of the Black Nationalist movement, Civil Rights, poor white people's movement, Puerto Rican Nationalism movement — they had street gangs in New York, in the Bronx, that were just essentially burned out. At some point in the very late '60s, early '70s, these kids were like 'We're going to come up with our own peace treaty.' They came up with their own peace treaty, decided that, 'We aren't going to engage in violence.' Well, what's the alternative to violence? The Zulu Nation was born out of that...These kids, they were children, got together in the public park, stole public electricity, which I strongly support, and decided to do park jams as an alternative to violence."
He later added, "At our core, Hip Hop, every time you see a successful rapper, you're seeing a job creator in the community. Jay Z has provided hundreds of jobs and created dozens of millionaires and it's changed the economy in places it wouldn't have. OutKast in Atlanta, personally changed the economy in the last twenty years."

Murs "Have A Nice Life" Updated Release Date, Cover Art & Tracklist

by Cliff Grefe

MURS uncovered the details surrounding his new album yesterday (April 14). The project, Have A Nice Life, is prepped to hit stores May 19 and include an array of personal accounts.
The album's debut single came in form of the "Okey Dog" narrative record. An ode to his homie on the inside, the song tells the story of his real-life Deebo.
According to MURS, Okey Dog differed from the Friday character in that he was shorter and would only bully people when he was bored — but he stood as a standalone thug all the same. "There’s a lot of dudes that rap, talking a lot of shit, but he is that dude," MURS says.
The Making Underground Raw Shit rapper also released the visual for "No More Control," Have A Nice Life's second single, yesterday. In it, he urges those behind the #BlackLivesMatter campaign to seek change in the Hip Hop and Black communities, as well.
"'No More Control' is about not letting the media or the powers that be control us or guide us into thinking that the problem is anything other than violence," he says in a press release.
Other conceptual Have A Nice Life records include, "Mi Corazon," a love song for a half Mexican-half Salvadorian girl, and "The Worst," an intimate account detailing the temptations that throw a married emcee on the road.
The Have A Nice Life project will be his first solo effort to be released through Strange Music.

Hip Hop Revolutionized Popular Music More Than Any Other Genre, Study Shows

by Christopher Harris

Researchers at Queen Mary and Imperial College London came to the conclusion that Hip Hop's impact has meant more to music than the Beatles explosion in the early '60s.
A new study published in the "Royal Society Open Science" journal shows Hip Hop has affected the music landscape more than any genre.
Researchers at Queen Mary and Imperial College London came to the conclusion that Hip Hop's impact has meant more to music than The Beatles' explosion in the 1960s.
The study focuses on musical patterns in the US pop charts from 1960 to 2010 by analyzing music properties of approximately 17,000 recordings that charted. With help from from music website Last.fm, the researchers gathered their data and employed methods such as signal processing and text-mining to examine the musical properties of songs.
The lead author of the study, Matthias Mauch, spoke to The Guardian about his "groundbreaking findings."
“For the first time we can measure musical properties in recordings on a large scale," he said. "We can actually go beyond what music experts tell us, or what we know ourselves about them, by looking directly into the songs, measuring their makeup, and understanding how they have changed."
Although pop music has evolved continuously, its growth was most rapid during three stylistic revolutions around 1964, 1983 and 1991, the study states. 1991, which is largely considered part of Hip Hop's Golden Era, is the most prominent time period of the three.

Chuck D Presents SESAC "Visionary Award" To Warner Executive Jon Platt

by Christopher Harris

"I thought I was doing pretty good and he pushed me to be even better," Jon Platt says of Chuck D.
On Monday (May 4), the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (SESAC) rewarded Warner/Chappell North America President Jon Platt with the "Visionary Award" at the 19th annual SESAC Pop Awards, held at the New York Public Library.

Platt has endured a storied career in the music business, signing artists such as Jay Z, Drake, Kanye West, Jeezy and Snoop Dogg to publishing deals before they became household names.

A single conversation – nearly two decades ago – with Public Enemy's Chuck D changed the trajectory of Platt's career. At the time, Platt was moonlighting as a DJ in Colorado.

"He basically challenged me," Platt told HipHopDX, before accepting the award in front of hundreds of guests. "I thought I was doing pretty good and he pushed me to be even better...I'm just thankful that he chose me to give those words to."

It seemed somewhat fitting that the P.E. frontman presented the award to Platt. He told DX before the ceremony began that he was "glad" to be there to support Platt during the night.

"He was already a mover and shaker in so many ways," Chuck said. "I told him, 'the sky’s the limit.’"
Platt insists that he never thought about working in the music industry until his chat with Chuck.
On Monday, he went home with one of the most distinguished awards of the night and witnessed songwriter James Napier win Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for his work on Sam Smith's "Stay With Me."

"They call me a visionary, but I never envisioned this," Platt said with a smirk. "I’m just thankful."

Report Shows TIDAL's Indie Label Royalty Payouts Double Spotify's

by Christopher Harris

An unnamed indie label has shared its first TIDAL royalty statement, giving critics, consumers, and users a direct look at the percentage Jay Z's music streaming service site actually pays its rights owners.
The statement, which was posted on Digital Music News, consists of data from March 2015.
TIDAL’s average payout to the label came out to about 1.2 cents ($0.012), which is almost double the amount Spotify pays .72 cents ($0.0072) to rights owners.
During a recent impromptu Twitter address, Jay Z proclaimed TIDAL to be the destination "where artists can give their fans more without the middlemen."
He also stated that "Tidal pays 75% royalty rate to ALL artists, writers and producers - not just the founding members on stage."
His last statement poses a discrepancy on the chart. The label's royalty sheet shows TIDAL paying out a 70% royalty rate, opposed to the 75% Jay mentioned. Though most streaming services take 30%, it's noteworthy to mention that this report does not coincide with what Jay announced towards the end of April.
A similar document showing April's earnings may be more accurate once they become available. Still, statistics show TIDAL is indeed offering its indie affiliates a significant amount more in royalties than its competitors.

Pharrell & Robin Thicke Ask For New "Blurred Lines" Trial

Pharrell & Robin Thicke Ask For New "Blurred Lines" Trial

Marvin Gaye's family is now suing Universal Music Group, Interscope and others.
Pharrell's and Robin Thicke's camps have submitted a motion to the judge who heard the "Blurred Lines" copyright infringement case asking for a new trial, claiming errors and "prejudicial and irrelevant" testimonies from Thicke and musicologist Judith Finell, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In March, a jury awarded the family of the late Marvin Gaye the money because it said that Pharrell and Thicke's work on their 2013 hit "Blurred Lines" copied Gaye's 1977 song "Got to Give up."
In the newly filed motion, the counter-defendants say, "Although many of Counter-Defendants’ objections were sustained and much of Ms. Finell’s testimony was stricken after it was given, the net effect of this cumbersome process was extremely prejudicial to Counter-Defendants: (1) the jury likely concluded that Counter-Defendants were overly concerned by Ms. Finell’s testimony or were desiring to obstruct and delay the proceedings; (2) Ms. Finell was able to present to the jury testimony, demonstratives, and music that the jury never should have seen or heard; and, (3) the jury faced an impossible task of having to constantly distinguish between the select parts of what they saw and heard each day that they could consider later in reaching their verdict, and the parts they could not."

If Pharrell's team can't get that, they want to reduce the $7.4 million penalty down to $680,000. They claimed that the "Got To Give It Up" sample only comprised five percent of the record, so the Gaye estate should only get five percent of the non-publishing profits.

On the flipside, Marvin Gaye's family is now suing Universal Music Group, Interscope and others, and intends on halting the song's distribution and seizing any work that contains it.

Instagram Launches @music With Questlove

by Christopher Harris

Instagram's @music channel already has over 37,000 followers.
Instagram announced Wednesday (April 29)  that it has launched a new account, aptly titled @music.
The social media site unveiled the music-focused product via its blog along with a brief explanation regarding its features.

“For the past four years, we have become the home for artists big and small—a place where people across the musical spectrum come to share stories, reveal their creativity and connect directly with fans,” said Kevin Systron, CEO and founder of Instagram.

@music seeks to explore different music genres from across the world, highlighting the artists who produce it and the community that listens.

Instagram plans to assist by offering a deeper look into the musical experience through popular artists such as Questlove, up-and-coming acts, instrument makers, album illustrators, and music photographers, among others.

@music's second post features Questlove speaking on his experience as a DJ.
“When I first started, I was just desperate,” he says about the lack of pacing in his shows. “I was like, this is a hit, this is a hit, this is a hit. And you get addicted to the adrenaline rush of, ‘OH MY GOD THIS IS MY SONG.’ You kill them so much. I realized that now I am more obsessed with the opposite. I will put a bad song on and actually watch them filter out the floor. And I will wait two minutes [then play] ‘Uptown Funk’ –– ‘OH MY GOD IT’S MY SONG’ –– and then the scream is bigger than before."
Instagram's @music channel already has over 37,000 followers.

Skyzoo "Music For My Friends" Release Date, Cover Art & Tracklist

by Ural Garrett

Album from Brooklyn emcee to feature guest appearances from Black Thought and Jadakiss.
Skyzoo is slated to release his A Dream Deferred follow-up Music For My Friends June 23, according to a press release.
Set to be released on First Generation Rich Inc./ Empire Records, the project is scheduled to feature guest appearances from Bilal, Black Thought and Jadakiss, among others. Lending production to Music For My Friends are Jahlil Beats, !llmind, Thelonious Martin and Apollo Brown.
The Brooklyn, New York emcee wrote a narrative through the eyes of his 13-year-old self to describe the album.

"A blueprint and some 'know how, some good cooked food and some awareness leads to you thinking these conflicting, guilt inspired feelings are the Things I Should've Told My Friends," he says in part. "When it's all said and done, when the faces change and the desires become more expensive and the next in line become the next in line, when the bloodied badge unjustly wins and the lights begin to flicker and then dim, you realize maybe it was all just a Sweet Pursuit. All of it, nothing more, nothing less. And the sounds it leaves in the memories it created slowly becomes Music For My Friends." -Skyler (13 year old lyricist, graffiti writer, playground point guard, quarter water aficionado, and Mortal Kombat champ, preferably the Sega Genesis version)."
