KOTD's Organik Explains "Innovation" In "Blackout 4" Announcement

by Andres Tardio

King of the Dot's Organik talks about the Battle Rap league's "Blackout 4" announcement plans.
This year's "Blackout 4" event by King of the Dot is slated to take place January 24-25, but fans are still not sure who will be battling who at the event. The co-headliners, Dizaster Vs. Pat Stay and Bender Vs. Big T, have been confirmed, but the other battles on the card have yet to be revealed. This decision to "blackout" the audiences from all information was a deliberate one, a plan to do something that Battle Rap fans have not seen in this era of the platform.
"Innovation," Organik says of King of the Dot's plans in an exclusive statement to HipHopDX. "We wanted to do something to add excitement to the scene again, to add some excitement to live events and for the fans and battlers involved. The concept for 'Blackout' was something I had been kind of toying with in my head for quite some time. At first, it was just an idea, but over time I would put more and more pieces of it together in my head on how it can work, be presented and most important of all marketed. We wanted to wait for the right time to pull it off, a time where we sat in a position to be able to do it right the first time and make it historic from the jump."
"We're gonna kind of keep y'all out of the loop as far as information goes and leave you guys to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Organik said in a KOTD video blog. "We're gonna be announcing battlers individually, but not who they are facing. Who they are facing, that'll come out on the day of the event. You've gotta be at the event or order in the pay-per-view to find out who is battling who. I promise y'all, if you know our history, this is the best King of the Dot event we've put together yet."
The official trailer for "Blackout 4" can be found below. It includes battler names, but not the match-ups, save for the two mentioned above and the Ground Zero title bout between Step Easy and DDSS.

Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine's Beats Music To Launch On January 21

by Roman Cooper

Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine's streaming service launches in a matter of days.
Beats Music, the latest product from Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine's Beats Electronics, is set to launch on January 21.

The subscription streaming service, originally called Daisy, is expected to compete with Spotify, Pandora, and Apple's iTunes Radio. Beats Music also has Trent Reznor of Nine Inch as its chief creative officer.

In a profile of Beats Music on The New York Times, Jimmy Iovine spoke about the service. “What song comes next,” he said, “is as important as what song is playing now.”

Ben Arnold, an analyst at the NPD Group, also spoke on the new streaming provider. "If they are coming at this from a new angle, not just that we want to be the Beats version of Spotify, it’s a great idea,” he said. “If not, then you’ve got to rely on your brand. There’s something for them there, but it’s tougher.”

The marketing campaign includes an integration deal with cellular provider AT&T, a Super Bowl ad, and plugs on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

U2's Bono also spoke on Beats Music. “There’s so much music to hear online, people have become a bit deaf to the choices,” he said in an email. “Jimmy believes that Beats-style curation will become the discovery model that the music business is waiting for. I would never bet against him.”

Beats Music will only be available in the United States for the time being.

Method Man "The Meth Lab" Release Date & Cover Art

by Soren Baker

Method Man has released the cover art for his forthcoming "The Meth Lab" mixtape.
Method Man has released the cover art for his The Meth Lab mixtape, which he said on twitter that he’d be releasing in March.
Method Man also said that he’ll be releasing his Crystal Mef album in August.
In January 2013, the Wu-Tang Clan member provided an update on the then-titled Crystal Meth, which he has discussed as far back as 2008. During an interview with Montreality, he said he had not started recording the project but that he's "going at my own pace" and needs "to get my ass off the couch."
"I'ma start work soon,” he said at the time. "I can't put a number on it. I'm doing it at my own pace, which is slow as shit. I need to get my ass off the couch. I been on that couch, heavy. I write a verse now and then because I don't know if there's any real listeners... You've gotta have a real listener in order to appreciate what you're doing. I don't want someone to say, 'I like the beat.' I hate that shit. Or, 'I like the hook.' There's so much more to it than that. I hate that and the motherfuckers who run up on me every day thinking that I'm just a pothead or some shit. There's so many more levels to my character than just smoking fucking weed."
Method Man's tweet about his forthcoming projects is as follows:

Murs & Curtiss King Announce "Shut Your Trap" Release Date

by Andres Tardio
Murs & Curtiss King Announce "Shut Your Trap" Release Date

Murs says his Curtiss King-produced album is set to be "a backpacker's adventure into the world of Trap music."
Murs has announced a new album, Shut Your Trap, a project slated to feature Curtiss King's beats. It is scheduled to be released January 23.

"It's a backpacker's adventure into the world of Trap music led by Curtiss King's amazing production," Murs says in a video announcing the project.
The album is set to showcase Murs' appreciation for different types of Rap music, he says.

"I love Hip Hop," Murs says in the video. "I love Rap, so to me, the Top 2 albums of the year are Run The Jewels [by Killer Mike and El-P] and Young Rich Niggas by Migos. That's my dichotomy. That's my balance. I've always been like that. Personally, no disrespect to anybody, but I've never heard the whole Black Star album. I don't know that type of Hip Hop. I grew up on E-40. I'm an at-risk youth from the inner city, but I make backpack music because I did read and my mother stressed being educated.
"I guess I'm from the trap and I'm making trap music," Murs continues. "To me, it's a genre I respect. I don't like a lot of backpack rap. I don't like a lot of trap music. There's not one genre of music that has a bunch of good rappers. There's a bunch of motherfuckers biting me and especially biting [bleeped out] right now. Some of them are blowing up off of us. Some of them aren't. And I'm supposed to like that just because it's backpack or just because it's conscious? No. Fuck that. It's not creative. You're still an artist and you're failing. I don't care if you got a positive message. If you suck, you suck. I'm just doing me and having fun.
Curtiss King, who is also in the video announcement, says he had a great time working with Murs on the upcoming release.
"I had fun doing this," King says. "It's having fun at the end of the day. It's okay to smile."

In February 2012, Murs spoke with HipHopDX about the importance of having Curtiss King perform at Paid Dues, Murs' annual music festival.
"For the most part, I won’t say that I do Paid Dues for other people, but it is for Reverie and it is for Curtiss King," Murs said at the time. "That’s why I want people to get there early. Curtiss King’s mom is coming. Reverie’s mom is coming. I will probably cry that day because of that alone, that someone’s mother thinks that this idea that I had seven years ago is important enough to their child that they would make a YouTube video to ask me to put their child on the festival. That’s crazy to me. I don’t even deserve that."

MAINO FT JADAKISS WHAT HAPPENED

Madlib Says He Doesn’t Want His Music Exploited Like J Dilla’s

by Yohance Kyles
madlib

Despite passing away in 2006, J Dilla’s production can still be heard on new songs released well after his death like on Joey Bada$$’ “Two Lips” and the Yancey Boys’ Sunset Blvd album. The possibility of posthumously producing tracks for future work is not an idea that fellow producer Madlib wants to see happen with his unreleased material.

In an interview with dazeddigital.com, the creator of tracks for Tha Alkaholiks, De La Soul, and Mos Def says he wants all of his work destroyed. Madlib states he doesn’t want to see his music get exploited like his Champion Sound collaborator J Dilla.
“I’m gonna burn it down before I die, a little Lee Perry action. Ain’t nobody exploiting my s**t,” said Madlib. ”If I was dying in hospital I’d tell my son to go and burn it. Don’t think I’m going to get exploited like they’re doing to Dilla. I’m learning from how he’s being treated from some people.”

Madlib, who sometimes performs under the moniker Quasimoto, also reflects back on the time he worked with Dilla making Champion Sound.

“That was the favorite time of my life. We were just musical cousins,” expressed Madlib. “When Dilla was healthy it was crazy. When he moved to LA we hung out every week, went to clubs, acted crazy, got drunk. I think about him all the time. I always bump his music.”

Wu-Tang Clan Announce “A Better Tomorrow” Album Is Coming Soon

by Yohance Kyles

The Hip Hop collective’s first album since 2007′s 8 Diagrams was reportedly waiting on verses from Raekwon. RZA even suggested that the album could be released without Rae’s contribution. During an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show in November RZA spoke on his hope that they could “put some of the business to the side” and Raekwon would still make the album.

RZA also recently took to social media to share that he has been hard at work on A Better Tomorrow. The head of the Wu tweeted that he had spent significant time in the studio finishing up the project.

Logic Promises 2014 Debut Album & Discusses Artistic Freedom

by Andres Tardio

Logic says Def Jam & Visionary support his creative decisions.
Logic, who says that his debut album is slated to drop this year, recently spoke about the creative freedom that he is afforded through his record deal with Def Jam.
"The deal that I got with Def Jam through Visionary is incredible," Logic says in a video released through All Def Digital. "We do what we want and the label just supports it."

In the clip, Logic also praises those working with him behind-the-scenes.
"My team is everything," he says. "There are so many people in my camp that have allowed me to get to this level. I definitely don't take it for granted. What we have to always remember as musicians and artists is to just focus on the craft. That's all that matters."

Logic has announced that his debut album is slated to be released this year. That promise was made via Twitter.

In December, Logic spoke with HipHopDX about his upcoming album.
"This record actually has a lot of significance as far as lyrically," Logic said in an exclusive statement to HipHopDX. "This is one of the first songs where I really...In my career, my fans know [me], definitely, without a doubt with records like, 'Dear God' or 'Dead Presidents III,' where I have delved into who I am as a person and the things that I've gone through. However, I have never truly brought you into the world of like Bobby, the person. Kind of been a lot about Logic.

"I feel like with rappers and mixtapes, its kind of like, we rap and we show our worth," Logic continued. "So it's like, 'I'm this good because I can rap like this, check out this style, check out this, that.' That's kind of what we do [with] mixtapes, to be honest. But with the album, it is totally different. I want this to be why my fans are my fans. I want them to get to truly know me. You can hear it in Kendrick's mixtapes, you know, kind of being the best and you can hear it in Cole, just them rapping, but there are some really incredible songs that they have of great meaning and who they are, but I feel like in their album, that's where we really got to know who they were, not only as rappers, musicians and artists, but as people."
