DJ Premier Says Age Is One Of The Biggest Problems In Today's Hip Hop

by Danielle Harling DJ Premier and Bumpy Knuckles speak in-depth on Hip Hop and more during an interview with Out Da Box TV. During a conversation with Out Da Box TV, noted producer DJ Premier and rapper Bumpy Knuckles spoke in-depth on the current state of Hip Hop. The two musicians spoke specifically on the age gap in Hip Hop, corporate radio, and paying homage to those who came first. When asked what his thoughts are on the progression of Hip Hop, DJ Premier touched on those who believe that being an entertainer in Hip Hop has an age limit. The producer clearly and concisely expressed his opinion on the topic by simply stating that, “you never stop something that you love.” “I’m 46-years-old so I represent a different area of the culture. The area we’re from is really the original area because before there was any scratching and cutting we were enjoying R&B, soul, jazz, rock, pop, new wave music, everything you could think of,” DJ Premier explained. “Everything that channeled into it becoming what it is now. So my respect for it is way more different than the average Hip Hop so called fan, emcee, DJ, whatever that’s involved in it now that’s at a younger age. The age thing is really one of the biggest problems that we face in Hip Hop right now. Because it seems like everybody wants to focus on ‘when should you stop.’ And you never stop something that you love.” Bumpy Knuckles touched on another much discussed topic in today’s Hip Hop, corporate radio. The rapper revealed that while corporate radio is a necessity it shouldn’t become the primary focus in music. “I think people have to be not so self-centered when it comes to the presentation of the music meaning don’t get boggled down with the corporate radio and all that stuff,” said Bumpy Knuckles. “I mean that stuff is definitely necessary you can’t front on that, but that’s not what it’s all about. Because if you really about keeping the culture alive and relevant there’s ways to do that.” hiphopdx.com

GZA Explains Concepts Behind Graphic Novel "Chlorine" & "Dark Matter" LP

by Steven J. Horowitz GZA says that he has "three or four albums in my head," and to expect "Dark Matter" this fall. GZA has been hard at work on a slew of projects, taking time out of his schedule to deliver lectures at prestigious universities. Next on the checklist is a graphic novel titled Chlorine, which he described as a "coming-of-age" story during an interview with Step Into The Black. "I’m working on several different things right now. I’ve got about three or four albums in my head. A book, several scripts and a graphic novel," he said. "The graphic novel is about four kids in a period of the summer, off of school, and it takes place near a pool called Chlorine. It’s more like a coming of age story, an anthology, 12 different stories combined into one." The Genius also spoke on his upcoming album Dark Matter, releasing this fall. The Wu-Tang Clan member said that he's had the concept for years, but that he only decided to act on the idea last year. "I’ve written about the universe and stars and galaxy and incorporate different things into my music. Dark Matter is coming out, it’s a journey into the cosmos. It’s an idea I had for years, and I just decided last year that I wanted to do this," he said. "I was interested in science at a very early age, but not to the point where I wanted to go to school and study and be a physicist. Just learning things about the stars and planets, the workings of the atoms and molecules and elements and knowing that we are part of this whole universal structure and it’s all fascinating. It’s something to write about." hiphopdx.com

Kendrick Lamar Discusses "good kid, m.A.A.d city" Album & Relationship With Lady Gaga

by Slava Kuperstein

Kendrick Lamar explains the extent of his relationship of Lady Gaga, and discusses his upcoming album.
Anticipation is steadily growing for Kendrick Lamar's major label debut, good kid, m.A.A.d city, for which the rapper dropped the first single, "Swimming Pools."
In an interview on WGCI's 107.5's "The Morning Riot," Kendrick explained that his album would not feature many (if any) artists. "I'm selfish on this album," he revealed. "A lot of people get into my situation, they feel that they made it already. They wanna grab all these producers, all these names. I still feel like I gotta prove myself."
Kendrick also made headlines recently when Interscope labelmate Lady Gaga reached out in support of the West Coast emcee.
"That's a good friend," said Kendrick of Gaga, who was in attendance at his performance at recent Pitchfork's Music Festival. "She just reached over on Twitter. Just being a fan of the music. We come from two different worlds, as far as the music we doing."
"She's a fan of Hip Hop," added K. Dot. "She says...my sound is refreshing. That's what really attracted her to it." Kendrick explained that when Gaga reached out, he thought it was a prank. "There be so many fake accounts on Twitter and stuff, so I had to really go through and check. It was her, most definitely."

Busta Rhymes Hints At Possible Leaders Of The New School Reunion

by Jake Paine

Days before the "Busta Rhymes & Friends" headlining show at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, Busta Rhymes posts a recent picture of him with Charlie Brown and Dinco D, saying "Stay tuned."
Busta Rhymes is headlining the eight annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival this weekend (July 14) in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Billed as "Busta Rhymes & Friends," the veteran emcee took to Twitter on Tuesday (July 10) to allude to a potential reunion with his former group, Leaders Of The New School. Busta said "stay tuned" and included a recent photograph of him pictured with L.O.N.S. cohorts Charlie Brown and Dinco D.
Brooklyn Bodega, organizers of the festival, acknowledged the tweet  to HipHopDX as a potential allusion to the weekend show, but could not confirm or deny its validity.
The Leaders Of The New School, which also included fourth member Cut Monitor Milo, released two albums, 1991's A Future Without A Past and 1993's T.I.M.E. The group was also part of the Native Tongues collective, including A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Jungle Brothers.
After Busta Rhymes pursued a solo career in the mid-1990s, the Leaders disbanded, after appearing on his 1995 debut The Coming.
Tickets for the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival main day are still available.

Tech N9ne Discusses Collaboration With R.A. The Rugged Man

Tech N9ne Discusses Collaboration With R.A. The Rugged Manby Sean Ryon

Tech N9ne speaks on his upcoming song collaboration with R.A. the Rugged Man.
From Lil Wayne to Bumpy Knuckles, Kansas City icon Tech N9ne's known for putting together fan-favorite collaborations - he's even got an entire series of album dedicated to such tracks. Now, in a recent interview with Faygoluvers, the Strange Music impresario discusses one of his most widely anticipated collabs with R.A. the Rugged Man.
Tech explained that the song, tentatively titled "Hallelujah," is set to appear on the Rugged Man's upcoming LP Legends Never Die. He said that he and R.A. first connected through a mutual friend - Tech's publicist Richie Abbott - a number of years prior. He even added that the Long Island emcee had asked him to appear in his film Bad Biology, but that Tech declined due to the unusual and overly graphic content.
"I didn't write [my verse] according to [the idea of] 'Hallelujah,' but the beat was called 'Hallelujah,' I didn't know it was saying that in the background, but I wrote what I felt and it's super lyrical because R.A.'s super lyrical," he explained. "R.A., me and him have been cool for some years because my publicist Richie Abbott is like his brother. We went out to dinner, we've done clubs together laughing at motherfuckers…we've been there before…R.A., he's laid back; he's the Rugged Man…he's a real dude."
He added, "I was supposed to shoot a movie with him - he wanted me to be this thing that fucked these pussy-heads. I was like, 'I'm not gonna fuck them pussy-heads, R.A.' It was like a monster movie and the bitches [in the movie] had beautiful bodies but had pussy faces, and I was supposed to be the horny motherfucker fucking their faces. I was like, 'I'm not gonna do that, R.A., I love you but I'm not gonna do that.'"

Aesop Rock’s New Album “Skelethon” Via Rhymesayers Entertainment

by JP DelaCuesta
San Francisco-based MC Aesop Rock‘s first album in five years, Skelethon, was officially released today (July 10) on Rhymesayers Entertainment, and made available to both fans and listeners in a preview format exclusively on YouTube.
Aesop Rock was hailed as “Indie Rap’s wordiest wordsmith” by Rolling Stone, and his Skelethon, which was officially announced at the end of March, acts as the follow-up to his 2007 None Shall Pass album.
The new, 15-track album features guest appearances from the likes of Kimya Dawson, Allyson Baker of Dirty Ghosts, Hanni El Khatib, Nicky Fleming-Yaryan, Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and the Grimace Federation.

According to a Rhymesayers press release, “Aesop’s new album follows in the wake of several deep personal losses and highlights subject matter that deals with the sometimes-futile ways people try to cope with serious issues.”
Skelethon is set to be both a showpiece for his illustrious career and a serious payoff for his droves of ever-patient loyal fans,” the statement adds.
Aesop Rock is currently on tour in support of the new album, and will be hitting Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, and Vancouver in the coming days, before heading to Seattle, Washington on July 20 for “The 2012 Capitol Hill Block Party.

Talib Kweli Announces “Attack the Block” Mixtape As Prelude To New Album “Prisoner of Conscious”

by JP DelaCuesta
Before Talib Kweli releases his highly anticipated sixth solo studio album, Prisoner of Conscious, later this year, the Brooklyn native will be offering fans a prequel of sorts in the form of a new mixtape titled Attack the Block.
“Gonna drop a track off my new mixtape this week. Trying to decide which one #attacktheblock,” he tweeted over the weekend.
Attack the Block drops later this month, with features from Ryan Leslie, Black Thought, Rah Digga, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Jae Millz, Skyzoo, John Forte, Maino, and Fashawn already being named.
Kweli also noted that, in addition to his “going in over instrumentals,” he has also gathered production from Charlemagne, 9th Wonder, 88-Keys,  OhNo, EJones, and Symbolic 1.
Following the release of his solo 2011 album, Gutter Rainbows, talk has swirled that Kweli was hard at work on a follow-up to his and Mos Def’s critically acclaimed 1998 album as the duo, Black Star. Although no release date was ever set, the two have been seen in the studio together over the past two years, so a new album appears to be on the horizon.
There is currently no official release date for Talib’s Attack the Block.

Run-DMC Back Together

by Grandmaster Grouchy Greg Watkins
Legendary Hip-Hop group Run-DMC is back together, sources have confirmed with AllHipHop.com today (July 6).
A source close to both camps revealed that a high-level meeting took place between Run and DMC.
While details of the reunited pair’s upcoming business deals were not revealed, plans are secure and in place for the future of Run-DMC.
“Run-DMC is definitely back together, and it’s a great day for Hip-Hop,” a source told AllHipHop.com.
Run-DMC retired almost ten years ago, in November 2002, shortly after the death of group member Jam Master Jay.
“We can’t perform anymore. Nobody wants to see Run-DMC without Jay,” Run said in 2002. “Run-DMC is officially retired. I cannot get out in front of my fans with a new DJ. Some rock bands can replace the drummer and I don’t know any other way but to be the three original members. That’s all I can say. We are retired.”
For over 10 years, the group has refused to perform together, even in April of 2009, when they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
“Two turn tables and mic, that’s all it took to change the world,” Eminem said. “When I was a kid growing up in Detroit. I didn’t know what to be, then came Run-DMC. I had never heard or seen anything like them, but I knew I wanted to be them.”
The Hollis-Queens-based group was formed in late 1980 and is widely recognized as one of, if not the most influential Hip-Hop group of all time, influencing both the fashion and sound of the genre.
Both MTV and VH1 surveys have ranked the group #1 of all-time and they have a number of firsts under their belts.
Run-DMC is the first Hip-Hop group with gold, platinum and multi-platinum plaques, the first Hip-Hop group with a major endorsement deal (Adidas) and their also the first rappers to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
During their hiatus, both Run and DMC stayed extremely busy.
Reverend Run hit big on the television with the hit reality series “Run’s House,” while also performing sold-out concerts with Kid Rock.
DMC won an Emmy Award for his documentary “DMC: My Adoption Journey,” while mentoring children with The Garden of Dreams Foundation.
AllHipHop.com will keep you updated on details surrounding Run-DMC as they become available.

Method Man Talks “Crystal Meth,” “Blackout 3″, And Possible Wu-Tang And “How High 2″ Films

by JP DelaCuesta
Method Man has been working on a number of projects over the last few years, including his fifth solo studio album, Crystal Meth, which is currently being recorded in conjunction with his and Redman’s third entry in their Blackout series.
Method Man wants to put out as much quality music as possible.
“Me and RZA are gonna work together on my next LP, Crystal Meth,” Method Man told AllHipHop.com. “I’m looking forward to getting back in the studio with the kid, ’cause we just came off a Wu tour, and the camaraderie was still there. So I know the chemistry is gonna be there when we go in the studio.
“If there’s still fans out there listening, then I’m definitely coming with some sh*t for you,” Method Man promised of his forthcoming music.
Despite what he feels was a slept-on album – in the form of 2009′s Blackout 2 and less than stellar feedback for his, Ghostface and Raekwon‘s collaborative album Wu-Massacre – Method Man doesn’t get hung up pleasing critics or “the mainstream.”
Fans of his longtime collaborations with Redman won’t have to wait much longer for Blackout 3, which Method Man says is being recorded at the same time as his solo album and Redman’s Muddy Waters 2.
The 20-year member of Wu-Tang Clan also pondered the possibility of filming How High 2 with Redman once a “good script” is written, whether he thinks the world will ever get a Wu-Tang biopic, and why he hasn’t been taking as many film roles in recent years.

Rhymefest Explains Rant Against Chief Keef & Interscope Records

by Steven J. Horowitz

Rhymefest says that you "can't blame the bomb" but sees Chief Keef as an example of what's wrong with Chicago.
Rhymefest put Chief Keef and Interscope on blast in a blog post last week, writing that the Chicago, Illinois rapper’s lyrics are glorifying violence. During an interview with WGCI’s The Morning Riot (via FSD), ‘Fest clarified his statements, explaining that Keef’s music is a negative reflection of Chicago at the moment and that you “can’t blame the bomb” for what the city is producing.
“I meant to say what I said. It’s really not about Chief Keef as much as it is about exploitation,” he said. “It’s no coincidence that one of the most violent periods that Chicago has ever seen, that this is what represents us musically. This is what represents us as a people. We have a history here and then when we get to senseless violence, the prison industrial complex is real.”
He said that he doesn’t have anything against a particular kind of music, but that his problem is rooted in the amount of violent songs that are getting released.
“I don’t have anything against any particular kind of music. My problem is the imbalance of the music that we get. So if all of the diet of the music that you get is kill kill kill and we’re going to glorify that, then that’s what we are conditioning our shorties and they’ll never end. They’ll do it, they’ll sing about it, they’ll rap about it and that’ll be it.”

Announcing the name on Twitter, the group's drummer stated that the LP will be called &TYSYC, but did not explain what it stands for. "Undun is like a xmas lp. specific setting. Our next lp '&TYSYC' (guess) will be regular. @teramartin @BlackiusMaximus @reverofnolef100," he wrote.
?uesto previously spoke on the follow up to undun, stating that it would have much more energy than its predecessor. “I’ll say that at least four of the submissions [for the new album], they’re above 115 beats per minute. It’s very high energy. Not fist-pumping, but fast. This is just the music stage, not even the lyrical stage. by Slava Kuperstein

Eminem provides a hard date for Slaughterhouse's album release, and says the Beastie Boys "made me want to rap."
June came and went without Slaughterhouse dropping welcome to: Our House, their debut album on Eminem's Shady Records.
In a recent interview with DJ Whoo Kid on Shade 45, Em provided a hard date for his latest signees. "The album's coming out August 28. I'm actually finishing up one of the songs for it today, as we speak."
"I rap their verses for them," joked Em. "I present it for them like, 'Yo, here's how you guys should say this, here's what you should say,' and then that's pretty much how you do it."
Eminem also spoke on the passing of the Beastie Boys' Adam "MCA" Yauch, explaining their impact on Hip Hop. "It's really sad. It's really a shame. The Beastie Boys mean so much, have always meant so much since they came out, and mean so much to Hip Hop. All three of those guys. It's really, I don't know man, it's really sad."
"When License To Ill Came Out, that shit changed rap," he added.
Em offered his condolences to the Beastie Boys, as well as Yauch's family, expressing their impact on him. "My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole group, and Adam's family, and everybody. It's just a really sad situation. Those guys and LL made me want to rap. When I saw the Beastie Boys for the first time, you know, 'Fight For Your Right to Party,' when I seen that video...it made me realize that it was possible. Just seeing that and being like, 'whoa, holy shit!' They were killin' it."

RZA Planning Album To Score Of “The Man With the Iron Fist”

by Roman Wolfe
Wu-Tang Clan member RZA has revealed initial plans for the soundtrack to his highly anticipated directorial debut, The Man With the Iron Fists.
The RZA is directing and scoring The Man With the Iron Fists, which is currently filming and stars actress Lucy Liu, Russell Crowe, and RZA himself.
During an interview with Variety, RZA said that he plans to use the score to the film to produce a soundtrack featuring contemporary artists.
“It takes a lot of know-how,” RZA told Variety. “For every one minute of music, it sometimes took two days. So it wasn’t easy to do it like that, and there were a lot of crashes on the computers because there are so many different waves and layers on top of things to make it sound real and to give a real string articulation.”
Although he is used a full orchestra in the past, for this go round, RZA opted to use electronic synthesizers to reproduce a full orchestra.
According to Variety, the difference between RZA’s analog orchestra and his digital orchestra is minimal.
The Man With the Iron Fists is slated to be released in 2013, in time for Wu-Tang Clan’s 20th anniversary.
