J. Period Reunites Pete Rock & CL Smooth For "WAKE UP! Radio" Mixtape

by Jake Paine

The Roots & John Legend team up with J. Period for a monumental mixtape to commemorate the upcoming "WAKE UP!" compilation.

On September 21, Columbia/Sony Records will release John Legend & The Roots' WAKE UP! The compilation features cover versions of songs by Donny Hathaway, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and Nina Simone. The label, Legend and The Roots teamed with J. Period and Truelements for WAKE UP! Radio, a prelimenary mixtape to the official release. J. Period told HipHopDX today that the work will include a reunion collaboration with seminal 1990s Hip Hop duo Pete Rock & CL Smooth.

The Mount Vernon, New York duo reunited for "Our Generation (J. Period Remix)." The song draws from Ernie Hines' title of the same name, which was used for the duo's 1992 hit "Straighten It Out." This will be Pete & CL's first recorded material together in six years, when they worked on Rock's Soul Survivor II.

“WAKE UP! represents a call to action,” J.Period deduced. “Music can either be vacuous entertainment, or one of the most transcendent and powerful forces on this planet. John Legend & The Roots are making an incredible statement releasing these songs at this moment in history, and I am excited to create a companion piece that helps keep that energy in circulation online for many months to come.”

“When these songs were written, people were more spiritually in tune,” said ?uestlove in a statement. “It was fresh from the Civil Rights era and there was a feeling of hope that maybe, yes, someday we will all be free. In 2010, not so much.”

“These songs [are] so relevant now,” John Legend said. “On most of them, you wouldn’t change a lyric [from the original version.] The passionate election [in 2008] represented change and hope, and awakened a new generation of activists who had never been inspired before. [Fast forward to today:] the intense brew of possibility [and] poverty, optimism and despair, activism and unrest, global connectedness and intractable global conflicts is the reason WAKE UP! exists."

Rah Digga "Classic" HipHopDX Diary Entry #8

by Tanisha Alston

Exclusive: Digga explains her opening up on this album, and why having on 10 songs is a difficult task.

With the clock winding down until the release of her first new album in 10 years, Classic, Rah Digga continues to reflect on the the past, present, and future of an emcee who has witnessed numerous changes in the Hip Hop arena during her absence. Providing deeper explanation on the importance of the #10 when it comes to the amount of songs on her album, Digga gives her rationale on balancing going hard lyrically and getting personal. After taking time to give thanks to long-term supporters, Digga drops a question on being questioned about the importance of writing your own rhymes.

"Less than 24 hours away to the big one. I'm not sure if it's even registered yet that I have an album dropping. Still pretty surreal to me. I really wanna thank everyone who has supported me through this long journey. All of my closest friends who have had to listen to me in utter disbelief tell them repeatedly that I am an editor now and had no intentions of releasing an album. Who would've thought? It has been an adventure to say the least, but an adventure that I will always cherish.

A lot has transpired in 10 years and it would have been really easy to just throw in the towel and say, 'I don't even know where to begin.' I mean there are soooo many stories I could have told and perhaps I may be a lil' guilty of not diggin' deep enough into my soul to share those experiences with you on this album (hence the diaries). [Laughs] This was something that I made a point to do on Everything Is A Story (hence the name) [Laughs] and it is unfortunate that I couldn't share that body of work with you. But that was then and with all the evolution that has transpired in music I felt it was important to set the tone lyrically first, sort of a reintroduction for those that may have just forgotten how Rah Digga gets down on the mic. I left little room for inflections on this album and really took it back to that little girl who beat the streets feverishly to let the world know that I am a hard rock emcee and always have been. With only 10 songs on the album that means I have the daunting task of coming right back with another one. Have no fear...it will not be another 10 years.

I've been asked to share with you my thoughts on the importance of writing your own rhymes. It is a slogan I've been campaigning from the beginning of my career and I'll leave you with this: Who can tell your story better than you?"

Music Execs, Lawyer Back Jimmy Henchmen; Shoot Down NY Daily News Story

By Roman Wolfe

(AllHipHop News) A number of music industry executives have come out in support of manager James Rosemond, after an article in the New York Daily News ran today (September 13th), accusing him of cooperating with the government in a variety of cases.

The New York Daily News reported that Rosemond served as an informant in at least three cases since the mid-1990's including one, in which he received leniency for a Los Angeles gun case.

People who were actually at his sentencing have come forward with statements to clear Rosemond of the allegations contained in The Daily News' piece.

"I was inside the courtroom at Jimmy Rosemond's sentencing and nothing that the NY Daily News alleges took place," former Haitian Presidential candidate Wyclef Jean told AllHipHop.com. "Looking from the outside within, the way the judge and prosecutor were beating on this man, if at any time there was such cooperation it would have been made crystal clear in the courtroom. I speak as a witness that was in the courtroom that day and it deeply saddens me that whenever we do the right thing, people want to put us on the wrong path."

Representatives for Rosemond said that the rapper has suffered from years of bad press, since rapper Tupac Shakur name checked him on the songs "Against All Odds" and "Hit 'Em Up."

On the songs, Shakur claimed Henchmen was a co-conspirator in his 1994 shooting in front of The Quad recording studio in New York, while a number of top rappers were present, including Notorious B.I.G., Lil Cease, Andre Harrell and Sean "Diddy" Combs.

In May of 2008, the Los Angeles Times released explosive documents claiming to prove an undeniable link between Shakur's 1994 shooting and Jimmy Rosemond, as well as Sean "Diddy" Combs.

Both Rosemond and Combs vehemently denied the reports, and it was later learned that the information was based off fake documents forged by an incarcerated con man named David Sabatino.

The L.A. Times was forced to retract the story.

Ironically, today's story in the New York Daily News coincides marks the 14-year anniversary of Shakur's death.

The rapper was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip on September 6th, 1996 and died from his wounds on September 13th.

Rosemond's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, also denied the claims in The New York Daily News and said that his client had never signed any cooperation agreement with the state of federal government.

"The article in today's New York Daily News about Jimmy Rosemond is nothing short of a targeted assassination attempt by the government, with an assist from their favorite daily newspaper," Lichtman told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

"Due to the government's inability to convict Jimmy in a court of law, they have stooped to trying to get him lynched in the street," Lichtman fumed. "We are weighing our legal options at this time but we can say in no uncertain terms: Jimmy is not and has never cooperated with law enforcement. If you noticed the article never stated one named person that Mr. Rosemond allegedly informed upon. Any suggestion otherwise is a damnable, actionable lie."

Aaliyah's uncle Barry Hankerson, a veteran music executive and owner of Blackground Records was also in court with Rosemond, where he testified as a character witness on his behalf.

"I attended the sentencing hearing for Jimmy in the capacity of a character witness and in the courtroom I observed a judge that was moved by the number of people that had experienced Jimmy over time, particularly me who worked very closely with him. Jimmy is clearly a man that impacted the court by the way he lived. At one point during the sentencing the judge responded that the fact that everyone was there on Jimmy's behalf was impressive and Jimmy deserved leniency in his sentencing. It was obvious to all of us as observers that the sentence was not handed down based upon reports or intrinsic findings but based upon the obvious character and rehabilitation that Jimmy portrayed through his friends, associates and family members."

Hip-Hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy also vouched for Rosemond and shot down the reports, which he "vividly remembered" because an R&B legend also appeared in court to support Rosemond.

"I was there at Jimmy's sentencing hearing as a character witness and nothing like what is purported in the New York Daily News actually transpired in the courtroom," Fab 5 Freddy said. "I vividly remember one of the highlights that day was when Gladys Knight appeared on Jimmy's behalf and he had a huge showing of support. At one stage the prosecutor was trying to be aggressive because of contempt that Jimmy had won other cases and the judge had to scold her for being too aggressive. It was a memorable moment. Jimmy finished the remaining term and has since been on the right path. This seems like a complete smear job and what the Daily News did resembles what was done to him at the Los Angeles Times which resulted in the firing of a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and a retraction from the newspaper."

Eric B. of the legendary Hip-Hop group Eric B. & Rakim also said that the Daily News' story about Rosemond ever cooperating with the government was full of inaccuracies.

"I was there from day one for Jimmy and as one that was at his sentencing I can say that it was never mentioned in court that he cooperated with the state," Eric B. stated. "In fact, the prosecutor said that the courts had let Jimmy slip through the cracks. There was unequivocally never any dialogue in the court sentencing that even remotely resembles what was written in the Daily News article and the story clearly didn't point to any evidence. How do you have a case with no evidence? It just doesn't add up."

Musician, producer and songwriter Bryce Wilson also expressed support for Rosemond, who manages the career of Compton rapper The Game, Sheek Louch, Mario Winans, Blood Raw, Rich Boy and others.

"Absolutely none of this was ever brought up in the courtroom and what the Daily News asserts is absurd," Wilson stated.

1520 Sedgwick, Birthplace of Hip-Hop Saved By $5.6 Million Loan

By Nolan Strong

AllHipHop News) A building that is recognized as a Hip-Hop landmark in the South Bronx has been rescued by a federal loan that will halt the building's sale, allowing the rents to stay affordable to its hundreds of tenants.

DJ Kool Herc and Senator Charles Schumer led a campaign to stop the sale of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue from being to private investors, who planned on raising the rents and selling the property, which would have displaced many of the building's current occupants.

Additionally, the building is recognized as the place Hip-Hop music was born, when Kool Herc hosted a legendary party inside the building's recreational room in August of 1973.

The building received $5.6 million in financing through Mayor Bloomberg's New Housing Marketplace Place plan, which was created to assist physically and financially stressed multifamily buildings throughout the city.

In 2011, $3 million has been committed to make much needed repairs to 1520 Sedgwick Avenue.

“This is a huge victory for Sedgwick residents that will serve as a model for preserving affordable housing throughout New York City,” said Senator Schumer. “The message here is clear, residents of 1520 Sedgwick, and residents of affordable buildings throughout the City, should not be used as pawns for predatory equity investors to make quick profits. The purchase of this note is a major milestone that we hope will be a big win for residents of Sedgwick.”

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn acknowledged 1520's contribution to the world and as grateful the building had been saved from unscrupulous speculators, who simply planned to buy the building to flip it.

“Three decades ago, DJ Kool Herc mixed funk songs with African beats and rap, and hip-hop was born during a house concert in the basements of 1520 Sedgwick,” said Speaker Christine Quinn. “Hip-hop has often been an expression of hardships and 1520 Sedgwick has seen its fair share of struggles. After the fiscal crisis, 1520 Sedgwick became a victim of predatory equity investors, and we were at risk of losing a historical and cultural landmark. But with this purchase and $3 million of Council funding for repairs, we will now see the rebirth of 1520 Sedgwick – and maybe see history created once again. I’m particularly excited that this will give tenants a chance to recreate their homes, not to mention the possibility of one day converting the building into a co-op."

Soulja Boy Challenges Fabolous To A Battle Over Twitter Insults

By Mike Winslow

(AllHipHop News) Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy has challenged rapper Fabolous to a battle over a series of tweets the Brooklyn rapper sent out last week making fun of Soulja Boy's alleged tryst with Katt Stacks.

Fabolous, who is known for starting trending topics on Twitter with his tweets, lashed out at Soulja Boy after footage of him hit the net with Katt Stacks in a hotel room, allegedly using cocaine.

Although Soulja Boy has denied any drug use, Fabolous berated him on Twitter, to his 631, 337 followers.

"Lettin Kat Stacks in ur hotel room alone is #StupidBoySwag," Fabolous tweeted last month. "All u rappers pay attention, that right there is called#StupidBoySwag* AYYYY."

Fab continued the insults, which Soulja Boy has finally replied to.

Although he deleted some of the more aggressive tweets from last night, today (September 7th), Soulja Boy resumed his threats to Fabolous via Twitter.

"I will murder that ni**a fab in a freestyle battle he garbage compared to soulja boy," Soulja Boy tweeted today. "I tell you what Fabolous get yo weak ass on wax and spit them weak ass bars so I can s**t on you boy."

Soulja Boy then called out Fabolous over his new mixtape There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music, which dropped last week.

"Fab is so mothafu**in lame he pick the wrong week to beef," Soulja Boy continued to tweet to his 2,358,026 followers. "lets see how much his new "EP" sell 1st week. -_- garbage ass rapper."

Ca$his Preps New LP 'Shady Loyalty 1st'

By Jake Crates

(AllHipHop News) Chicago raised rapper, Ca$his, an artist signed to Eminem’s Shady Records, is coming back with new found outlook on the game.

He is planning to drop a new street album called Shady Loyalty 1st before his first official release for Shady.

“I finished the Shady street LP and it’s just called Shady Loyalty First. I love the project it’s 12 tracks of undeniable fire,” Ca$his told AllHipHop.com. “Young Buk from Psycho Drama, Mitchy Slick, and production from Rikanatti, Frank Dukes, Young De of Homeland Security. Everyone needs to check for the single. Its like a real Shady Records anthem for 2010 through 2011.”

A number of rappers are still on Shady Records after several artists including Stat Quo and Bobby Creekwater were let go, with their masters.

While Ca$his is back again working hard on his music, he struggled for a few years going through personal issues.

Of his favorite records, a song about his daughter Miana, whose mom passed away is his favorite.

“So far one of my favorite records is Miana about my first daughter, her mom died and I went to jail and its like a Ms. Jenkins, but updated and looking back at life and problems that people go through. Its timeless and that separates it from anything. You can never go wrong doing a song being honest about your child,” Ca$his said.

Staying focused has been the goal for the rapper, who has been releasing new music or videos every week for the past 8 weeks.

“Yea man this is going on 8 weeks of nice stuff for everyone this week," Ca$his said. "My mindset in this music is to just go in and show that I am improving. People may have forgot about me and my whole squad. Like I said, I took a little break to get cleaned up and to get focused. “

Ca$his was first showcased in mainstream rap when he was featured on a mixtape by Eminem which later turned into the album, Eminem Presents the Re-Up.
