Legendary Producer Willie Mitchell Dies

by Slava Kuperstein

Recording artist
and producer Willie Mitchell died on Tuesday (Jan 5) at the age of 81.

Perhaps best known for his work with Al Green, Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson, the Hi Records artist suffered cardiac arrest on Dec 19, according to the New York Times.

Mitchell's influence spanned generations; not only did he contribute numerous hits in the 1960s as an artist, but he also helped talent ranging from Green and Peebles to present-day acts like John Mayer and Anthony Hamilton. He also owned the aforementioned Hi Records label in the 1970s.

He recently wrote string and horn arrangements for Rod Stewart's upcoming R&B covers album, as well as producing an album for Solomon Burke. He received a Trustees Award from the Grammy Foundation in 2008.

Mitchell is survived by two daughters and a son. HipHopDX extends our condolences to Mr. Mitchell's friends and family.
