All-Star Concert Marks Phife's First Public Appearance Since Surgery
By Grouchy Greg Watkins
A Tribe Called Quest group member Phife Dawg will make a public appearance next Wednesday (January 20) during an all-star concert designed to raise awareness about diabetes.
The rapper will be joined by actor Michael Rapaport during the concert, which features performances by Ghostface Killah, Talib Kweli, Jay Electronica, Consequence and numerous surprise guests.
The evening will also celebrate Phife, born Malik Isaac Taylor.
Phife was diagnosed with diabetes in May of 1990, but admitted to not taking care of himself by indulging in sweets, liquor and fats.
In 1992 he fell ill and by 2000 he was put on dialysis. In 2002, Phife was hospitalized due to his condition.
The appearance is the first time he has appeared in New York since undergoing surgery for a much needed kidney transplant in 2008.
Music during the evening will be provided by D-Lyfe, who has worked with artists like Notorious B.I.G., Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and others.
Various diabetic organizations will be onsite to take donations in addition to educating attendees about diabetes.
The event takes place January 20th at 8:00 PM at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York. Tickets to the concert cost $25 at the door.
