De La Soul & J. Period Unveil New Q-Tip Collab, Best Of Mixtape

Author: Jake Paine

In a tradition of acclaimed official "Best Of" mixtapes ranging from Nas to Big Daddy Kane, The Roots to Lauryn Hill, New York-based deejay J. Period has joined forces with the legendary Q-Tip [click to read] to release The [Abstract] Best, due next week.

The release, a volume one of at least two, follows the duo's November collaboration Q-Tip For President, the Barack Obama/election-inspired work that received over 100,000 downloads.

The [Abstract] Best features all new material, rare material, and exclusive collorations from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Pharoahe Monch, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Zion I and others.

Perhaps most notably, the work features a Native Tongues reunion between Q-Tip and his longtime brethren, De La Soul. The song, titled "Excursions 2009 (Tribute Mix)" can be heard on HipHopDX [click to listen].

Monday, De La's Posdnuos told HipHopDX, "Q-Tip is my family and I've known J. Period for some years
now, so coming to the call of being a part of this wasn't a question," in response to how this historic reunion took shape.

He added of their professional opinion of each other, he's my big little brother. I'm older than him, but I've learned a lot from him about Jazz music and breaks in general. Tip showed and helped me get a lot better at using the SP-12 [sampler]. Before then, I was working on the original Apple computers to make beats. His music is filled with many mazes; it's not just one path to understanding, the music he contributed to Tribe and outside work. It's timeless."

Pos also commended J. Period for his own groundbreaking work in the mixtape medium. "As I said, I have known J for a while, from seeing him at parties and Hip Hop functions, and he used to give me his CD of mixes which I still have - one of my favorites is the Best of Lauryn Hill. There are millions of mixtape deejays, but a lot of them just make compilations of others work and try to use that to make a name for themselves. [J. Period] places quality in his work and seeks out the artist that he is making a CD on, and as well, looks to add elements that aren't the norm and he can actually deejay so he's part of that family of dope deejays, like Kid Capri and others who made you look forward to the next mixtape."

Posdnuos lastly revealed that De La Soul, who besides an official 2006 mixtape, has not released an album in over five years, is presently at work with Nike on their next project called Are You In?. The work is due in March, a lead-in to the album, You're Welcome, promised on the 20th anniversary of De La Soul's 1989 Tommy Boy Records classic debut. The album reportedly will feature Gorillaz, and Chuck D of Public Enemy.

He added that the group may promote the latter release with a similar Best Of mixtape.

According to Billboard.com, the event will be held June 11-14 in Manchester, Tenn. Erykah Badu is also confirmed for the festival.

"It seems more relevant than ever to offer it," said Jonathan Mayers, president of festival co-producer Superfly. "We want to make Bonnaroo as accessible as possible. We really believe in super-serving our audience. If you say, 'I want to do a music festival,' there's nothing really proprietary about that. The details are what make it interesting. These are like never-ending art projects for us."

The Beastie Boys issued a statement about the festival, saying: "We are looking forward to bringing heat and fire inside of your festival grounds. We (the band known as Beastie Boys) are like a three-headed dragon with hot molten metal spewing forth from every head. Ready yourselves. Stand fast. Saturn's second moon is on the rise. We approach you now from the Northeast at the speed of lightning. There will be no respite from our wrath."

Hip Hop hasn't always been welcome at Bonnaroo, as last year, Kanye West was the subject of some controversy due to reports of a lackluster performance.

Diddy Blames DJs For Decline In Hip Hop, Talks New Album

Author: Danielle Harling

Hip Hop entrepreneur and rapper Diddy has become one of the latest artists to pass the blame regarding Hip Hop's current status.

In a recent interview with MTV, Diddy explains why Hip Hop could have been better if the DJ hadn't fallen off.

"People have figured out the formula when they make records for radio, and DJs ain't DJs no more," Diddy explained to MTV. "DJs don't break records no more. DJs don't play album cuts. DJs play what is going to move the crowd. DJs, they don't expose you to the newness. That was the DJs' thing. Hip Hop is in a recession also. It's not dead, it's definitely way better than where it was at, as far as with 'Ye, T.I. and with Jeezy. It's so much great stuff out there, the responsibility has to come with the DJs."

In similar news, Diddy is currently working on his latest album which he promises will have an unexpected and experimental sound.

"Right now, I'm working on my record, and it'll be out in the end of summer," said Diddy. "It's feeling good. It's different. I'm creating a new sound. It doesn't sound like anybody else's stuff out there. With that comes a risk. I'm excited about the risk. I do have a beef a little bit with the game right now. I think Hip Hop has lost its risk-taking quality. Everybody goes to the comfort zone. It doesn't have that risk anymore. You're not like, 'What is that?' when you hear that record anymore."

In an interview with InTouch Weekly last year, Diddy explained his new sound as "electro Hip Hop soul".

Diddy's most recent solo album, Press Play, was released in 2006 and debuted as number one in the United States.

Madlib And Cut Chemist Headline “Timeless” Concert Series

Author: Edwin Ortiz

Though constantly expanding into different musical avenues, Hip Hop will always have its roots seeded in artists who preceded its inception. Sadly, honoring these artists today has become a novelty gesture. However, with the help of production company Mochilla and ArtDontSleep, a new concert series is ready to give these performers their proper shine.

Timeless, which is presented by VTech, will provide music fans young and old with a handful of performances that bridge musical gaps. With artists like David Axelrod, Madlib, Mulatu Astatke and DJ Houseshoes set to take the stage alongside full scale orchestras, originality and creativity will surely be in the spotlight.

Tom Bacon, vice president of marketing for VTech, laid out the expectations for an event that juxtaposes highly influential artists with some of Hip Hop’s most distinguished deejays. “‘Timeless’ is a one-of-a-kind concert series that celebrates diverse music influences and how they collaborate to create something truly unique. It's a unique product that will untether music lovers from their computers with high-quality sound and other features to fully enjoy music from around the globe.”

Cut Chemist, who is tapped as one of the deejays to perform for Timeless, is no stranger to working on different types of projects with a variety of recording artists. Explaining his perception of Hip Hop as an art form, Chemist stated, “I'll never lose sight of my roots as a Hip Hop deejay; it keeps me constantly inventing. I believe all music can be considered Hip Hop when it's presented in a way that's fresh to people's ears.”

The four-part series, which began Saturday, will be performed at Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex in Los Angeles. Each performance after this initial debut will take place on the third Sunday proceeding the last, culminating in a final performance by David Axelrod and J. Rocc on April 5. For more information on acts performing at Timeless, visit vtechphones.com/timeless. General admission tickets begin at $22.50, and they can be purchased through ticketmaster.com or at the Luckman box office.

Cormega Talks New Album, Label Situation And DJ Premier

Paul W Arnold
One of Queensbridge’s most respected alums, Cormega, spoke yesterday with HipHopDX to provide some early details regarding his forthcoming third official solo album, Born & Raised.

“It’s basically I was born and raised in New York,” ‘Mega explained to DX about the origins of his new album’s title. “[It’s] a New York-based album, [and I’m] a New York-based artist. And it’s like, we’re down right now… I wanted a title that represented me and that represents where I’m from, because I feel like we’re [not] getting the respect that we’re due. Like, no artist should ever be able to just straight up violate New York ‘cause we’ve done so much for Hip Hop.”

‘Mega promises that he’ll be bucking the trend that has swept into even his beloved NYC of late by not featuring any Auto-Tune assisted singing or rapping anywhere on his new effort.

“That’s the dumbest shit I ever heard in my life,” he said of the ‘Tune phenomenon. “I’m not gonna put that shit stain on my album. ‘Cause that shit, that’s not gonna be here forever. That’s one thing that’s hurting a lot of [artists], ‘cause as soon as something’s hot muthafuckas say fuck what I been doing that made me who I am, I’m gonna try something new because this nigga just did it and he’s poppin’ off… So now you got respectable artists doing something that Roger Troutman made dope, but these people are fuckin’ it up. So I don’t want nothing to do with that.”

Instead of following his rotten apple peers as they start jumping out the window for a momentary trend, he has assembled an army of the greatest NYC-based beatsmiths (and a couple non-New Yorkers) to craft a classic Cormega offering—one that will hopefully turn his city back in a more traditional and less trendy direction. While the lineup for the album is not completely confirmed as of this report, a legendary list of trackmasters is rumored to include the lineups responsible for albums such as Ready To Die, Illmatic and The Infamous.

Currently being mixed, Born & Raised is a truly independent project, with the album having been funded by ‘Mega, who is just waiting to confirm formal distribution for the project, as he explained, “There’s gonna be a label behind it, but it will definitely not be Koch.”

While a release date is not yet set, the album will likely hit store shelves not too long after a planned showcase March 19 at SOBs in NYC (where only songs from Born & Raised will be performed), and sometime following the release of a new free downloadable mixtape that ‘Mega is doing to give back to his fans who have been waiting patiently for new material.

“Basically the [theme of the] mixtape is how we fed up with radio,” he explained, “and how sometimes you turn on the radio and you hear a bunch of bullshit but at the same time even the song’s that’s bullshit you hear ‘em so much you start liking ‘em. So what I’m doing is I’m rappin’ over whatever was hot within the last year… I’m rappin’ over ‘Hi Hater’ [click to listen]. I’m rappin’ over ‘A Milli’ [click to read]. It’s like me teasing muthafuckas like, I can rap over anything, don’t get it twisted. I just stick to [doing] music the way I do it because that’s the way I do it.”

‘Mega told DX that he might let his fans choose the title of the mix, a decision that should not surprise any posters on the message board at www.legalhustle.net. ‘Mega has previously shown love to his loyal supporters, even letting posters pick one of the Primo productions (from a prized Premier beat CD given to Cormega) that appears on Born & Raised.

“The board played a big role in my whole album,” said ‘Mega. “The fans is the most important thing to any artist, I don’t give a fuck who you are. At the end of the day, they the ones who pay your bills. So I always listen to what they say… My album cover was [shot] by the guy who did the [shots for] ‘The Realness’ and ‘The True Meaning,’ But somebody from my site played a significant role in the cover. A person by the name of Victory, she’s one of the mods. She cleaned it up, and she put her touches on it.”

In addition to the cover of his new album, and its Premier production, site posters also had their input listened to regarding a demo version of one of the album’s tracks, “Fresh.” The song featuring golden era greats KRS-One [click to read], Big Daddy Kane [click to read], Grand Puba, and PMD initially boasted a different beat. But after an unintentional leak of the song, posters encouraged a change of sonic direction, leading to ‘Mega commissioning Buckwild to remix the track.

Rick Ross on 50: "He's a Parody of Hip-Hop"

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Fed up with 50 Cent's recent antics outside of the vocal booth, Miami rapper Rick Ross is speaking out on his verbal and now personal feud with the Queens mogul.

Yesterday, 50 released an 8 minute video with Tia Kemp, the mother of Rick Ross' 2 year old son.

In the clip, Kemp claims her child's father is a fraud who doesn't provide for his family.

Later, 50 took the woman a lavish shopping spree and insulted Ross' mother.

Last night, Ross called in to Hot 97's Miss Info and argued 50's actions should not take attention away from the lyrical battle.

"We not gonna let Curly (50 Cent) distract us from the fact 'Mafia Music' ended his career,' Ross declared. "The man has not charted a #1 record in Lord knows how long."

Addressing Dr. Dre and Eminem, Ross claimed the two superstars are hurting their legacies by their close association with 50.

"He makes Dr. Dre look like a [expletive]. I got Cool and Dre. Eminem is a genius," Ross explained. "The worst move he could've done is be affiliated with such a monkey. He's (50 Cent) a parody of Hip-Hop. I'm speaking from the streets."

Last night, 50 Cent also called in to Hot 97, speaking with Funkmaster Flex.

The mogul claimed that he has secured a tell-all book deal for Tia Kemp, and that his recent attack was based on Ross' previous demand for 50 to "come with something better within 48 hours."

Both artists are scheduled to drop two anticipated LPs within one month of each other: 50 Cent's Before I Self-Destruct in March, and Ross' Deeper Than Rap in April.

At press time, neither rapper would confirm if more diss records are forthcoming.

By Chris Richburg

Dr. Dre’s Detox may be shrouded in mystery, but fans can be certain of yet another artist whose contribution may end up on the finished product.

Rapper Nas has confirmed his involvement with Detox as he expressed his desire to do more projects with Dre.

"I did a joint. I think it's crazy," Nas told Billboard regarding his Detox collaboration with the chart-topping beatsmith.

"He's someone I'd love to do a whole album with one day. He's incredible. I think he's the best producer of all time."

With his work on Detox, Nas becomes the latest entertainer to lend his talent to the highly-anticipated project, which is slated to hit stores this year.

To date, 50 Cent, Eminem, Devin the Dude Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, the Game, Lloyd Banks, Lil Wayne and Jay-Z are reportedly attached to Detox along with producers Denaun Porter, Hi-Tek, Focus and DJ Khalil.

The Detox collaboration comes as Nas ponders his next musical venture.

The lyricist, who is nominated for two Grammy awards, admitted to coming up with a few ideas while alluding to having "a couple of special things up my sleeve that should be unveiled in the next few weeks," including one project that he promised would be “history.”

As for the Grammy recognition, the honor can be considered nothing less than a plus for Hip-Hop, according to Nas.

"In all honestly, the fact that Hip-Hop is even at that stage now, for a guy like Lil Wayne to even be nominated for the best album Grammy and me to be nominated, it's just a blessing," said the rapper, who received a best rap album nod for his latest album, Untitled.

"Whether I win or lose, I'm happy Hip-Hop made it that far."

50 Cent Brings Rick Ross’ Son’s Mother Into Battle

By Ismael AbduSalaam

In an unprecedented escalation of a Hip-Hop lyrical battle, mogul 50 Cent has released a video with the mother of Rick Ross' son.

The 8 minute clip was released today via 50 Cent's website thisis50.com.

The woman, identified as Tiallondra "Tia" Kemp, confirmed she is the mother of William Roberts III, the rapper's 2-year old son.

With 50 asking questions, Kemp explains her relationship with her child's father.

"It's sort of embarrassing, as you listen to his raps, you would definitely believe him," Kemp states. "His jewelry is rented, the cars are being leased…It's just sad. I just want to prove the facts."

Regarding the controversy last summer of Ross' stint as a corrections officer, Kemp confirms the story to be true. She claims the rapper lied to her about his previous employment when they lived together. According to Kemp, her suspicions were confirmed after speaking with the Miami rapper's sister and finding resignation documents.

50 also makes a distinction between Kemp and Brooke, the mother of Ross' daughter. 50 alleges the latter is a high-end call girl.

Further in the video, Kemp confirms the recent story of Ross taking back a truck he had given her, which followed a heated child support deposition over the rapper's assets.

"I've been driving it for 2 years. I was very surprised he would take it," Kemp stated. "Right now I have to get someone to pick me and the kids."

Later, 50 proclaims his intentions to show Kemp a great time, stating slyly "we gonna do some shopping, have a good time and then…y'all can't see all of that!"

After further insulting Ross by showing a personal picture of his mother and referring to her as the Nutty Professor, the viral video shows Tia Kemp being taken around to various shopping boutiques to pick up shoes and furs on 50's tab. Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely" is utilized as the soundtrack.

At press time, Rick Ross could not be reached for comment.
