Cipha Sounds Is No Longer With Hot 97

by Victoria Hernandez

The deejay parts ways with the New York radio station after nearly two-decades.
Cipha Sounds announced today (January 27) that he is leaving Hot 97.
“After 17 years, I'm leaving Hot 97,” Ciph wrote via press release. “I’m changing my relationship status from 'it’s complicated' to 'single.’ It’s been an amazing ride - from intern to weekends to morning show host to fill Angie’s seat in afternoons. Many years of incredible, life-changing experiences and enough amazing memories to last five lifetimes. The next move is already underway and I promise it's going to be huge.”
In addition to releasing an official statement regarding the matter, Ciph posted a picture on Instagram with a shattered image of the Hot 97 logo.
Hot 97 has confirmed Ciph's departure. The NYC station has issued the following statement:
“Effective immediately, Cipha Sounds is no longer with WQHT HOT 97 FM. We wish him well on his future endeavors.”
The news arrives mere hours after Ciph expressed his frustrations with the station during an episode of his Juan Epstein podcast with Peter Rosenberg.

Ciph spoke openly about being selected to take over Angie Martinez’s afternoon slot when she resigned in June.
According to Ciph, the transition was not a smooth one.
“I never knew if it was mine if I could make it mine, I would’ve loved it,” he said during the podcast. “One boss told me one thing, another boss told me another thing. They then fired one of those bosses. Another boss came in and told me one things, and then a boss of another station came in and became our boss and told me another thing. All nice people, all different opinions on what the show should be and how it should run.”
Hot 97 has hired Nessa to take over the 3 P.M. - 7 P.M. time slot. DJ Enuff will co-host with her during the broadcast.
