Legendary Hop Hip artist
Rakim will be the headlining performer at the “Let’s Take It Higher”
benefit concert on November 3rd. The event hosted by the non-profit
organization Hip Hop Saves Lives will take place at the famed New York
City venue Carnegie Hall.
The evening will honor the legacy and global impact of Hip Hop
culture over the last 40 years. Some of the founding fathers that will
be recognized include DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Rock
Steady Crew. Along with Rakim, other guests scheduled to perform include
Nice and Smooth, ASTRO, Zing Experience, and Brown Rice Family.
Hip Hop Saves Lives was founded by Chad Harper to “teach humanity through Hip Hop.” HHSL runs a program called “Kids Helping Kids: A Hip Hop Experience” that works with youth in New York City schools, a homeless teen shelter, incarcerated teens, and schools in Haiti. Participants in the program write, record, and create a video for a song celebrating an “everyday hero.” All of the proceeds from CD sales and fundraisers goes to support schools and clean water initiatives in Haiti.
“We don’t just teach humanity through Hip Hop, we create humanitarians,” states Harper.
