Nas Finds Renewed Purpose, "I'm Here & My Voice Is Relevant"

Nas recently spoke on his relevance outside hip-hop, revealing a new motivation to make more inspirational-based music.Claiming he was inspired by his Grammy-nomination for Untitled, the rapper described upcoming issues he plans to address while attending a BMI (Broadcast Music Inc) event last week.

"[The nod] showed that I'm here and my voice is relevant," Nas said. "It shows my work is appreciated...It tends to scare people and offend them, a record is supposed to do that every once in a while. We have it good here in America, we're spoiled. We don't realize that people are poor, don't have food, no water in this same world we live in. Those are the things I'm concerned with and need to talk about." (Associated Press)

Aside from performing, the event featured a variety of artists.

The night started off with performances from singer Kameron Corvet, rapper Rain, first runner up songstress Ryn Nicole and the evening's winners, 718. The finalists were judged Manny Hailey (Keyshia Cole and Lyfe Jennings manager) songwriter/artist Sean "The Pen" Garrett Jimmy Rosemond (The Game and Pleasure P's manager) music executive Kawan Prather and Leonard Brooks. The crowd was geared up to see Nas -- who did not disappoint. I was happy to hear "One Love," Street Dreams," "One Mic," "If I Ruled The World," "Black President," and his verse off "My President is Black" as part of the extensive set. (SOHH Soulful)

Nas recently announced plans to release an upcoming collaboration album.

"Right now, I'll tell you first, I'm working on an album with Damian Marley and we tryin' to build some schools in Africa with this one, and trying to build empowerment," Nas declared. "We're tryin' to show love and stuff with this album. So, the record's...all about really the 'hood and Africa also as well. That's coming out real soon...Too early to tell the title or anything like that. Shout out to my man Jr. Gong, we getting it in right now." (MTV News)

He is also set to headline this year's Rock the Bells international tour.

Rock the Bells 2009 performances by KRS-One, House of Pain, Nas, Common, Big Boi, Reflection Eternal, Damian Marley, Tech N9ne, K'Naan, RZA, Big Boi, La Coka Nostra, Slaughterhouse, M.O.P., Slum Village, Buckshot, Evidence, Alchemist and more. It will be hosted by KRS-One, Supernatural, Murs and Pete Rock. Additional artists to be announced. The North American portion of the tour will run from June 27 to August 9. (Guerilla Union)

Raekwon On Teaming W/ EMI, "They Made A Brother Smile"

Wu-Tang Clan's Raekwon recently discussed the motivation behind joining forces with his new record label, EMI, and his ability to go head-to-head with today's rap stars.Speaking on his departure from Aftermath, Rae justified his move to the renowned distribution company.

"I think EMI just recognized that I'm a veteran in the game and they recognize the value in [Only Built For Cuban Linx 2] and at the same time, they believe in me," Rae said in an interview. "They believe Rae still got the potential to stand next to these new artists and really do his thing. They recognize that I'm a legend and that I did a lot of sh*t for hip-hop. So at the end of the day they came to the table with a sweet deal that I couldn't deny as well as being real excited about working with me. They was listening to me and hearing me out and respecting that I'm really trying to own my masters right now...They felt like I deserved it though and they made a brother smile." (Hip Hop Game)

Rae recently answered the question on whether he felt his proposed deal with Dr. Dre's label, which never solidified, helped inspire Busta Rhymes' departure from Aftermath.

"Busta left after our situation was already not gonna happen," Rae said in an interview. "Busta might have felt like he was' getting the proper energy he needed to get, so really one ain't have nothing to do with two, but you never know at the end of the day, you know what I mean. I don't know, I can't call that." (XXL Mag)

He previously expressed his excitement to SOHH about joining forces with Dre around 2006.

"It is a privilege to be signed to a label such as Aftermath," the Chef said. "I am honored to be working with Dr Dre. I look forward to releasing my album, Only Built for Cuban Linx 2 in 2007, which will feature production from Dr. Dre, The RZA and other legendary producers. Get ready for the New York takeover!" (SOHH)

The rapper announced his deal with EMI late last month.

"The project is viscous right now," Raekwon said in an interview. "The album is done. I just closed my deal...I just signed with EMI...That's real news, that's real talk. I just signed off yesterday, you know what I mean. Made everything official. EMI is the home right now. They the ones that's paying me. They gave me a nice piece of what I needed...At the end of the day, it's gonna be raw hip-hop." (On-Air Idiots Show)

No I.D. Says Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 Is "Full-Fledged Classic"

Author: Andres Tardio

When Jay-Z announced that he'd release a third installment to The Blueprint series, anticipation blew up. The buzz around the LP has grown tremendously and now we have some information on what has been quite a secretive project to date. Chicago's own No I.D. has been in the lab working on the highly anticipated Jay LP and he's one of the few speaking on the overall sound of the album.

"Me and Kanye [West] been doing a lot of work. We worked on The Blueprint [3] together," he recently said in a video interview with RealTalkXpress.com. He also compared his relationship with West to that of Dr. Dre and Mel-Man, noting that he's put his ego to the side to play the Mel-Man role.

When asked about the album's progression, he spoke on the LP's overall theme and how it connects to Kanye's most recent effort.

"We were doing Blueprint 3 when we did 'Heartless'. ...Everything on Blueprint 3 is...It's like 808's and Heartbreak, but more Hip-Hop."

Before ending the video, he offered this to help anticipation grow even more.

"It's gonna be a full-fledged classic."

De La Soul Prepares Album With Nike, Drops Tomorrow

Author: Salima Koroma

Pioneering Hip Hop group De La Soul will partner with Nike label SportMusic to release their first full album in five years on Tuesday. The project, a 44-minute workout LP titled Are You In?, will release as the trio celebrates the twentieth anniversary of their hailed debut, 3 Feet High and Rising.

“The set we did is an actual album, with eight or nine songs, not one long deejay set,” says group member Posdnuos. “We recorded the songs and took them to Nike for feedback, and then brought in Flosstradamus to mix it all together.”

The group chose to work with Nike instead of an independent or Big Four record label and found that the brand encouraged creativity, something they felt was lacking from major labels.

“[With Nike] it's more like a mesh of the minds and a mesh of the creative aspect of things,” said Trugoy the Dove, to Madison and Vine. “I think Nike approaches this on a creative level just as much as on a business level. And I think that's what's cool about it. We sit down with an objective and try to accomplish it. The objective of a record label is just selling records. I think they could almost care less about the creative aspect of it. So this is cool, you've got a company that creates. They design, they actually focus on an audience, and I think that's what De La is about as well. It's not what labels are about.”

The group had previously helped Nike to design two signature versions of the Dunk SB shoe, and also performed at several of the brand’s events. While branded music has struggled to compete with big record labels, Nike has been successful with its SportMusic albums, signing on LCD Soundsystem, Aesop Rock, and Crystal Method for previous projects.

In addition to releasing the album and celebrating the twentieth anniversary of their debut, De La Soul is planning to tour Australia, Europe, and the UK, and is also working on another full length album.

Are You In?: Nike+ Original Run, is available on iTunes for $9.99 on Tuesday, April 28. The release features Raheem DeVaughn.

Stax Records Releases Hip Hop Sample Compilation

Author: Jake Paine

A year after a similar compilation was released by Blue Note Records, Memphis-born Stax Records is honoring the producers, breakdancers and Hip Hop audience with The Soul of Hip-Hop.

The onetime home to Sam & Dave, Booker T. & The M.G.'s and Isaac Hayes is releasing a 14 track collection, sporting the original, some out-of-print samples, used to craft such Hip Hop hits as Notorious B.I.G.'s "Who Shot Ya?," Wu-Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M." and The Geto Boys' "My Mind's Playin' Tricks On Me."

The release is due April 28th, in CD and digital formats.

In January, RZA spoke to HipHopDX about his influence under Isaac Hayes and the Stax sound. "When I first sampled ['As Long As I've Got You'] by The Charmels for 'C.R.E.A.M.,' he remembered the whole melody of it. He moved his fingers the way he did on the on the keyboard when he made it. It's been an honor for me to use his music and help bring it to younger generations."

The Charmels' "As Long As I've Got You" appears on The Soul of Hip-Hop.

KRS One, Boot Camp Clik Discuss Asher Roth, Rick Ross

Author: Anthony Springer Jr

As the Rick Ross vs. Asher Roth first week sales battle comes to a close, several artists in the Hip Hop community are weighing in with their opinions.

Buckshot from the Boot Camp Clik chose to remain diplomatic about the two artists, saying he liked both, and did not prefer one over the other.

In terms of comparing the rapper’s albums, Dru Ha did not take the middle road.

“My vote is for Ross,” he told Mikey Fresh. “On the album tip.”

“I think Asher is doing his thing too.”

Druha also gave love to Roth, saying he wouldn’t want to battle the Philadelphia emcee.

“He would do me ugly,” he said of a potential battle. “I’d be in trouble.”

Hip Hop pioneer KRS One threw a curve ball into the Ross vs. Roth debate.

“From a strictly unfair political point of view, I’d go with Rick Ross,” KRS said before saying his pick was “Joe Budden.”

Producer Says B.I.G. Inspired Production For Rick Ross

Author: Slava Kuperstein

Producer Colione of the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League recently spoke to Vibe Magazine about the impact The Notorious B.I.G. had on the production for Rick Ross' latest album, Deeper Than Rap.

"We actually went to the theaters and saw the Notorious," said Colion when prompted about the inspiration for Ross' song "Magnificent". "When we got home, we were inspired to work with B.I.G. So we started making tracks for him and 'Magnificent' was one of the beats that came out. We were like, 'Yo, if Biggie was alive today what would he rap to?' We were actually doing it for ourselves. Actually, our management sent that to Ross."

In a his interview with HipHopDX , Rick Ross spoke about Biggie's influence on his style.

"A lot of people make those references, and it would be natural for me to emulate Biggie in some form or fashion – me being a diehard fan of his," said Ross of the late emcee. "And most definitely there needs to be a little class, a little dress-up sometimes to give people that energy and that vibe."

In related news, Rick Ross is expected to capture the number one spot on the album charts this week with the debut of Deeper Than Rap.

Method Man And Redman Talk Blackout 2, How High Sequel

Author: Rashad Phillips

Redman released his debut, Whut? Thee Album in 1992, while his partner in rhyme, Method Man, dropped Tical two years later. Well aware of how much things can change over the course of 15 plus years, the duo talked about appealing to a generation of fans who might have been infants when they first debuted.

"We're maturing," Redman recently told the New York Daily News. "We evolved and learned a lot more from when we dropped the first album. And the shit we did in the 90's we can't do now."

Red described Blackout 2, which drops May 19, as a blend of old and new school. After releasing the singles "Ayo" and "Mrs. International," Method Man expressed his hopes for the group's sophomore effort.

"Honestly, I just want this [album] to be heard," Method Man explained. "That's all. If you listen to the song that we're doing for the video right now, it's like, ‘Is this a Redman and Method Man song?' It doesn't seem like we would ever make a song like this."

Despite having his feathers ruffled by an earlier Daily News report that he got high and forgot to pay his taxes, Meth says he and his partner also have plans to move forward with a follow up to the movie How High.

"We're pressing forward with 'How High 2,'" Redman said. "We shot the first one way under budget. We gave them money back and shot extra scenes! And the movie made money! So I don't know why they ain't giving us another shot. I'm about to go get $20 more million and shoot it myself."

Hot 97 Denies Flex's Interscope Boycott

By Roman Wolfe

Representatives for Hot 97 have denied popular DJ Funkmaster Flex’s claims that he would no longer be playing records released by Interscope Records, home to superstar rappers like Eminem, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre.

On his April 21 show, Funkmaster Flex blasted executive Nino Cuccinello at Interscope Records/A&M/Geffen, which also has artists like Soulja Boy, Lady Ga Ga and Akon on the roster.

“New York I am talking to a person who makes decisions who does things up there, moving funny style,” Funkmaster Flex fumed. “Nino is moving so bad. If you are anywhere in the tri-state area, I’m talking about people New York that control the music business and they control certain artists that they do not want you to see, but they want the pop stations to have. This is where I come in.”

That’s when Flex apologized to Interscope executive Step Johnson and stated that he would not be playing any Eminem or Dr. Dre records.

In today’s New York Daily News (April 28), Hot 97 Program Director E-Bro Darden said Flex’s statements were entertaining radio that had simply gone too far.

"We've never held back on a whole label's music," Darden told The New York Daily News. "And we won't.”

Darden stated that Hot 97 maintained good relationships with various labels and joked: “we had to muzzle Flex, ... people know a lot of what he says is showmanship, but that went too far."

In related news, Funkmaster Flex’s Custom Show and Bike Tour 2009 will stop in Louisville Kentucky this Sunday (May 3).

Miami rapper Rick Ross will make an appearance at Flex’s car and bike show, which is taking place at the Louisville Water Tower from 12-8PM

Ras Kass Secures May Release Date From Prison

By Ismael AbduSalaam and Remmie Fresh

After nearly 2 years of incarceration, West Coast lyricist Ras Kass is set to be released from jail late next month.

Frequent producer/collaborator Domingo told AllHipHop.com that Ras Kass is scheduled to be freed on May 29.

The rapper, real name John Austin IV, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in Los Angeles. Rumors were spread that he was jailed in 2007 for violating his parole by flying to Atlanta and attending the annual BET Awards. He was jailed shortly after he was seen freestyling in “Cipher 3” with Joell Ortiz, Flo, and Cassidy.

Ras Kass’ issues with the law have been a career hindrance for the last 6 years.

After months on the run, Ras Kass was apprehended by Las Vegas Police in May 2003 and served 19 months in prison for his third DUI conviction.

During this time, the rapper struggled to be released from his contract with Capitol Records, who had previously refused to put out his planned third studio LP, Van Gogh.

Although nothing has been confirmed regarding a possible new label home, the West Coast lyricist was in preliminary talks with Def Jam and G-Unit Records at the time of his 2007 arrest.

Ras Kass’ last album, 2008’s Institutionalized Vol. 2, was released independently on Babygrande Records.

Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival Lineup Announced

Author: Edwin Ortiz

The Fifth Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, which has staged such acts as Big Daddy Kane, Lupe Fiasco, and Ghostface Killah in past events, recently announced their featured guest artists for this year. All New York-based, rappers Styles P, Pharoahe Monch, and Smif-N-Wessun will take the stage June 20 at the Empire Fulton Ferry State Park.

Wes Jackson, executive director of the festival, expressed his satisfaction on the artists decided upon for this year. “We are more than pleased when we look at our lineup so far. Our goal has always been to unite the Hip-Hop audience under one banner. Monch, Styles and Smif-N-Wessun represent different branches of the Hip-Hop tree. They defy the labels stamped on them,” he said in a press release.

Continuing, Jackson explained the diversity this year’s lineup allows festival-goers. “Monch is a conscious rapper who is at equal ease on the bully pulpit as he is in the club. Styles P is supposed to be a gangster rapper, but has done some of his best work with Talib Kweli. Smif-N-Wessun is a local act that is just as popular in Japan as they are in Crown Heights. This lineup is diversity. This is Hip Hop.”

Another participant in the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival will be DJ/producer extraordinaire J Period, who plans to compile a mixtape of the artists from this years lineup, as well as create an exclusive mixtape of live material directly from the festival performances.

Ol' Dirty Bastard Tribute Album Coming In May

Author: Edwin Ortiz

Through a few unreleased verses in the last couple of years, along with “Life Changes” off 8 Diagrams [click to read] dedicated to him, Ol’ Dirty Bastard has been given a decent amount of respective exposure since his untimely death in late 2004. With that said, O.D.B.’s cousin Raison Allah is hoping his futures contributions will imprint "Dirt McGirt’s" musical legacy.

Currently working on a tribute album called All In Together Now Raw: A Tribute to Ol' Dirty Bastard, as well as a documentary entitled Dirty: One Word Can Change the World, Allah stated he made a vow to O.D.B. that he would carry on his name. While his work initially began on just the documentary of Dirty’s life through his company Zu Films, Allah soon found that interviews and a historical past couldn’t fully tell the story of Russell Jones.

“With all the footage and interviews I still felt like something was missing; Dirty was all about the music. When word got out that we were working on a documentary, Wu fam started sending me so many tracks. We had so many dope tracks that we didn’t want to wait until the soundtrack until the DVD to put them out,” Allah said in a recent press release.

A Tribute to Ol’ Dirty Bastard is expected to feature verses from fellow clansmen RZA [click to read] and Masta Killa, as well as affiliates Killarmy and 4th Disciple. While they have no set release dates, Allah also plans to put out a few more musical projects, as he explained, “Each tribute disc will include a short trailer to promote the upcoming DVD documentary.”

All In Together Now Raw: A Tribute to Ol' Dirty Bastard is expected to drop next month, and the documentary Dirty: One Word Can Change The World is scheduled for release in November.

Keith Murray Speaks On Album With Canibus, Misconceptions

Author: Jake Paine

After releasing albums that were not the best received, 2007's Rap-Murr-Phobia [click to read] and 2008's Intellectual Violence [click to read], Keith Murray has joined forces with longtime friend and fellow onetime Def Squad affiliate Canibus [click to read] to focus on restoring hard-nosed lyricism in Hip Hop. After Erick Sermon [click to read] initially spilled the beans to MTV News about the project being well underway, the Long Island emcee spoke to HipHopDX about the status and sound of this historic union of '90s masters of simile.

"Me and Canibus have been friends since we both came out in the early-to-mid-'90s, like ’95. We’re real good friends, and he was on ['Some Shit' from 1999's It's A Beautiful Thing]. We were always supposed to do [an album], but the courses of our careers took us in two different directions. So then, I finally got back up with him through a dude named M-80 [click to read], he was doing a tape and putting me and Canibus on the same song...then we decided to do the group, ‘cause our rhyme style is universal and scientific." Keith continued, "This addition to Hip Hop is going to show wordsmith at its finest, like the art of using rapping as a tool to communicate on a universal level."

Talking specifics, Murray added that that the sound of the project is best described as, "We go line for line, from [literary figure] Ichabod Crane to [references to] old Mike Tyson [fights], just bounce off each other’s brains and energy off the beat. It’s just universal. [You will hear] ambiguous metaphors, four syllable words, bouncing around to the beat, stuff like that. And it’s very aggressive, very aggressive."

Coming on Sound Records & Entertainment, the collaborative album is almost finished, intended for strategic release after Def Squad affiliates Method Man and Redman release Blackout 2 [click to watch]. Canibus and Keith Murray, presently doing spot dates, hope to be an opening act throughout Red and Meth's subsequent touring.

Performing is something that Murray treasures in his tool-kit. From his Beautiful brand to his role in light-hearted, hardcore Hip Hop group, Def Squad, Murray's music and his personality have led masses to believe he is a nice guy, who can simply be malicious on the microphone. However, stemming from recent interviews, DVD documentaries and high-profile feuds between artists like Prodigy and K-Solo, Keith, who spent a part of his career incarcerated, says his image has been compromised by the media nad industry. "Through the years and things, growing up, I got into some issues that carried over from where I grew up at. I’m an artist, so the things you do like running the streets and getting into the trouble you get into, it carries over. Unfortunately for me, it happened, and then that rep right there gave the media and certain people and things like that, ammunition to really ride with it and really misconstrue who Keith Murray is."

Having performed alongside EPMD, Redman and Method Man at last year's New York stop of Rock The Bells, Murray says he wants the kind of opportunities belonging to a 15 year veteran of releasing acclaimed albums. "Promoters are reluctant to book me for shows because they felt like I may have a temper problem, or [I may] get into it with another artist, or something like that, and become a liability. And this is my work, I take care of my family like this, and my show is great, and there’s not too many people out there that can match my show. I’m like, ‘Nah, you don’t have to feel that way, give me this shot,’ ‘cause there’s this tour coming up and I had a possibility of going. [The promoter] was like, ‘Well, how is his mental? Is he going to be alright, or is he going to be like they say?’"

A clearly hurt Murray defended, "I’ve had people tell me, ‘Yo, you saved my life. I was going to committing suicide, and then your record came on, and I realized I ain’t have to do it.’ All over the world, stuff like that [is told to me], so I just want to tell them, stop hating on Keith Murray! This guy’s a smart, respectable guy. But you know, you’ve got those phonies that people run with, and me, I’m not really one who been in the press doing much damage control, but now it’s time for me to speak out against it because it ain’t right." Speaking to radio, media and industry, Keith asserts, "I’m a real essential part to Hip Hop ‘cause I live Hip Hop, and I live for the culture. I represent it, so represent me right, too."

Professor Griff Talks New Album, Performing With The Roots

Author: Jake Paine

Public Enemy member Professor Griff is a busy man as of late. The Long Island-born emcee and activist is preparing his latest album, with band 7th Octave, titled A God Damage. The work is the latest in a discography for Griff, who, outside of P.E., has been releasing material dating back to 1990's Pawns In The Game. "The first one was real a real heavy, Metal-like Rock sort of thing. It was a fusion. This one's gonna be a lot more funkier [sic]," Griff said to HipHopDX Tuesday of the progression between 2004's The Se7enth Degree, released on P.E. partner Chuck D's Slam Jamz imprint.

"It's not really a change of direction. When you talk about changing directions, you're talking about driving to the west coast, then turning around and going North. [Laughs] I'm not changing directions; I'm bringing out certain flavors that were already there, because the formula that we use was Funk - we pride ourselves on the old Sly & The Family Stone, James Brown [sound]. That, of course, was the formula that Hip Hop borrowed from, in its breakbeats and that kind of thing," he explained. "This time, we're gonna blend it a lot better, and bring out the funkier aspects of it. As we performed, we saw less women [laughing], and we want people to vibe to it. The main ingredients will appeal to women."

With songs like the thematic "Why You Want To Kill God?" already recorded, Griff says he's hurrying to finish the album, without compromising quality. "Me and a brother of mine from Uniondale, New York, Society, who's been with me since my first solo album as a writer, we're writing like every other day," said Griff. "I don't just want to put songs on the album. I want to do something very conceptual - even the title of the album, A God Damage, I don't define it. People hear it and ask me what it means. You tell me. That's what it means, whatever it means to you. I'm tryin' to be artistic with it, bro."

Outside of music, Professor Griff is also very involved in the Black History 101 Mobile Museum [click to read]. With museum touring season upon us, Griff stated, "I would really like to take it a lot deeper, man, and start talking about some of those black, historical facts, that we don't get a chance to talk about in the classroom and in the lecture hall and over the dinner table in black homes. The only way other races and cultures are going to appreciate it, is if we, black people, bring it to the damn table." Specifically, Griff is hoping to educate this season's visitors on the creation of Rock music, with an emphasis on black women Rock pioneers, as well as teachings on the black role colonial America and education initiatives.

On June 6, Public Enemy will join The Roots [click to read] at their annual picnic in Philadelphia [click to read], to perform the seminal 1988 album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, an album that Professor Griff worked on. Excited about the concert, he said, "From a historical perspective, performing and doing [It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back] with The Roots is going to be monumental to me personally. [This is] in line with what other groups have come together and done. Hip Hop needs to do that at this particular time, and I'm sure you will agree with me. We can [talk] for an hour on all the reasons why Hip Hop needs to do it. [Laughs] For The Roots, who have maintained the whole concept of a live band, to do it with a Public Enemy, is very, very, very important." There may be a deeper message here too. "We need to show young kids, we need to show Hip Hop heads that yes, you have to perfect your art - and yes, you can be a musician and be in the game. You don't only have to be an emcee, deejay or producer. Yes, you can play the flute, trombone, percussion, whatever you do. Then, as a group - I want to see groups again, man! I want that whole concept of people working together, and to be in harmony, to be in sync, and to be on time...we need that."

The concert was announced shortly after a latenight network performance, which affected Griff's own contemporary music. "When we, Public Enemy and The Roots, performed 'Bring Tha Noize' on The Jimmy Fallon Show, man, it brought chills! Whew! If you pick apart what each instrument is doing, it's like 'Damn!' It made me go back to the drawing board with The 7th Octave, like, 'Man, we need to do that! A cover or somethin'!'"

This event may be historical to Hip Hop, and to the 20-plus Hip Hop veteran that's made history books. "I told Chuck, I just want to open up and do a couple songs. I want to be a part of the whole experience, so when we look back, and read the history, we can [all] look back and say, 'Damn, I was there!'"

A God Damage is intended for summer release.

Big Pun: The Legacy DVD Coming This Summer

Author: Jake Paine

After lots of anticipation, a polished documentary film production of Christopher Rios' life, better known as late Bronx emcee Big Pun, is finally about to be released. Director Vlad Yudin is unveiling Big Pun: The Legacy, this summer through his Vladar production company. Last week, HipHopDX spoke to Yudin about the film's making, its direction, and how the legacy of the superstar emcee can be properly evaluated, amidst several posthumous controversies.

Yudin explained his motives for telling the story, as the film began pre-production over two years ago. "Originally, we were all Big Pun fans; that’s what sparked the interest in us doing it. We were running a production company, and we all felt like Big Pun deserved more attention, in the media especially, because we all felt that he’s definitely getting a lot of respect from the Hip Hop community and people always remember him, but he never truly got a lot of attention from the media."

As many Hip Hop historians largely acknowledge Pun for his race and physical size, Yudin and crew acknowledged the man's unique microphone skills. "We talk about things that prior to that were not really talked about," began Yudin. "People always know him as the first Latino rapper to go platinum. People don’t really go into detail how he made his first album, how he got signed in the first place, who were the people closest to him that helped him to where he got, and really, what he was like after the success as well. It covers all of those aspects. People will definitely find all of those interesting details. What he was like in life with his family, an interesting approach as well, what kind of relationships he had with people. We really had a wide range of people that we interviewed, from executives that signed him to his record label, to his closest friends, to people basically from all over the US, various rappers that either worked with him or just recognize him." In regards to Pun's family, Vlad has worked closely with the rapper's widow, Liza Rios, making the work all the more authorized by the estate.

Because of this authorization and access, the documentary will prominently feature never-before-seen footage of Pun's life and music. "That was actually one of the hardest things to get because it was a lot of research done by us. There’s definitely a lot more material on various other rappers, but on Big Pun, it was definitely very difficult to come by," Vlad admitted. "There’s definitely going to be a lot of exclusive footage that people have never seen before. [There’s] some stuff never seen by anybody from the family archive, like you said, from Liza’s [role in the project], but also some stuff that we found [from] before the deal and after the deal, so definitely there’s going to be some things that people have never seen before - the majority of it, actually. Besides the music videos that people have seen, everything’s going to be exclusive."

With interview commentary from Snoop Dogg, Method Man as well as The Terror Squad, Big Pun: The Legacy also tries to acknowledge the rapper's acceptance in underground, street and mainstream levels. "He always got respect from the Hip Hop people. He’s always being remembered. We interviewed people from all over the place [and] people loved him. They loved his style. He was able to be commercial and at the same time, be loved by the community. So we did interview superstars in Hip Hop, we interviewed people from the underground, and everybody has pretty much the same response," said Vlad, who also spoke to Jim Jones, Xzibit, Rosie Perez and Loud Records CEO Steve Rifkind.

From these interviews, both Vlad and producer Edwin Mejia were surprised by some of what was revealed. One interesting tidbit tha Yudin found interesting was shared. "When he was already a platinum artist, when he was already very successful, he was always seen in his community. He never moved out of the Bronx. He pretty much lived in the same area as where he was from originally, he just moved into a bigger house. [He] never left. There’s a segment in the film where we talk about rappers going to Jersey or Connecticut or upstate New York, but he stayed in that same area."

Staying close to the hood, video footage and Terror Squad disputes have challenged Pun's actual legacy. The film realizes this, but lets the story tell itself. "There’s been different controversies, especially the things after his death. We tried to focus more on him when he was alive, about his career. So we didn’t go into the problems after the whole break-up of the crew and everything like that," said Yudin.

Mejia interjects, focusing on the positives, "What I’ve learned through all the interviews that we’ve done, whether it’s from Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Jim Jones, whoever it may be, we learned that he was a comedian. He had a great sense of humor and he was able to carry that throughout his career, throughout his life, regardless of how successful and famous he was."

As far as the time-table to make the 90 minute film available to fans and students of Hip Hop, dates are materializing. "We’re planning to make an announcement in the next couple of weeks. The film should come out, we hope, this summer. I can’t tell you the date yet, we’ll make an announcement…We plan to have a few more screenings in theaters."

Pharoahe Monch Joins Brooklyn Hip-Hop Fest; Plans New LP W.A.R.

By Ismael AbduSalaam

This year’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival (BHF) will showcase different vibes on the Hip-Hop soundscape with the addition of rappers Pharaohe Monch and Styles P.

The fifth annual event, which takes place from noon to 8 p.m. June 20 at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, marks the latest endeavor for Monch, who is best known for his classic hit “Simon Says” as well as his popular collaboration with Mos Def and Nate Dogg, “Oh No.”

In addition to the BHF, the Organized Konfusion co-founder is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming opus, W.A.R. (Let My People Go).

The album, which includes production from Black Milk, Mr. Porter, Lee Stone & M-Phazes, is slated to come out this year.

“Monch is a conscious rapper who is at equal ease on the bully pulpit as he is in the club. Some know him for Organized Konfusion's ‘Releasing Hypnotical Gasses.’ Some know him for the anthem ‘Simon Says,’” BHF executive director Wes Jackson told AllHipHop.com in a statement.

For this year’s event, BHF organizers hope to unite Monch onstage with Styles P to perform the D-Block affiliate’s 2002 hit, “My Life.”

The pair, along with famed mixtape DJ J. Period, joins previously announced performers Smiff N Wesson as they take the stage for the BHF.

According to Jackson, the new additions represent an effort to give festival attendees more bang for their buck and a well-rounded dose of Hip-Hop in all its forms.

"We are more than pleased when we look at our lineup so far. Our goal has always been to unite the Hip-Hop audience under one banner,” Jackson said. “Monch, Styles and Smif N Wessun represent different branches of the Hip-Hop tree... And J Period is the glue that keeps us all connected. This lineup is diversity. This is Hip-Hop."

Tickets the fifth annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival start at $10.

Reef the Lost Cauze Releases The Big Deal EP

Author: Slava Kuperstein

Today (April 14) marks the release of Reef the Lost Cauze's Big Deal EP, in stores now.

The EP, which is being released via Well Done Entertainment in association with F.U. Pay Me Records, features Brother Ali and King Magnetic, along with production credits from Eyego/Direct, Marco Polo (on the previously released lead single "I Wonder"), King Magnetic and Astronote.

Online consumers can find the Big Deal EP, which includes the Brother Ali feature on the "Big Deal" Remix [click to listen], as well as the "I Wonder" single at all digital outlets including iTunes and Amazon.

"'Big Deal' is just a throwback type track, the vibe of the beat is real Marley Marl so it made me write with that type of spirit, just braggin' and boastin'. Ali and I met years back and he's been a huge supporter of my music, took me on tour and everything so I was honored when he blessed the remix." says Reef of the Big Deal EP.

The digital version boasts two bonus tracks ("King & The Cauze" [click to listen] and "Hit'em Up"), from the King & The Cauze EP.

On working with King Magnetic, Reef explains, "Me and Mag met thru [sic] my man Adlib years back and we've been working together ever since, I think he's one of the illest and he brings the best out of me. We have a great chemistry so it's only natural we do this project."

King Magnetic also spoke on their partnership, saying, "Reef and I had done a show or two together in 2002 and when I made bail in New York City later that year, we were officially introduced. We didn't do any music the first three years, just hung out here and there and drank way too much on his stoop. When he was working on Feast or Famine, I came to a bunch of sessions and we did 'Crumbs.' Then I brought some beats out and we did 'The Sound of Philadelphia' on the spot. He literally wrote a verse before I could dump the track on ProTools. For the King & The Cauze album, we left all the scraps on the cutting room floor. Raw, yet polished sound. Reef and I bring the best out of each other on each track. Period."

While fans will have to wait until this summer for King & The Cauze, they can still scoop up the Big Deal EP in stores now. Also, the two artists have linked up with ThisIs50.com, DJ Whoo Kid and Dre Boogs of the Shadyville DJ's to release a free download today.

MC Eiht Talks Prospects Of Album With DJ Premier

Author: Jake Paine

West Coast pioneer MC Eiht is deeply respected for classics like "Hood Took Me Under" and "Def Wish." The Compton emcee, actor and businessman was mentioned in a recent interview with Hip Hop production icon DJ Premier as a potential partner for an upcoming album.

Earlier this week, Eiht took some time to confirm the likelihood of such a cross-coastal collaboration with HipHopDX. "I really think it’s up to the fans to just demand and want the record. True fans of Eiht or Premier, who’ve been following us over our careers, they know what we’re about, and I think it’s just for the fans, that people get to talking about it and wanting to hear it. Like, somebody called me and said they heard it on G-Unit Radio last weekend, so it’s like word of mouth is traveling. Me and Premier just talked about it like a week ago, so I think it’s something [that] if the fans want it and they keep requesting it, and they keep wanting to see it, and they’re positive about it, it can happen because it’s always supply and demand.

As rumored collaborative albums in the past with Nas and Royce Da 5'9" have been halted or delayed, Eiht knows Premier's repuation. "He’s busy. I mean, Premier does tracks for 50 [Cent], and Fat Joe, and whoever else. He’s a big-time producer, so I’m just honored to be in good graces with him, to know him for so long that he wants to extend his hand to work with me, so when people come back and tell me, ‘Aw man, that’s hot, man, we want to see that happen,’ it’s just my ambition to push it, and basically, if the fans say they want it and they keep communicating that they want it, it’s going to happen. It’s my hundred percent ambition to put this project out, and just like we talked again a couple days ago, it’s on the fast track right now. We’re a hundred miles and running and we’re probably going to get it done."

However, liner-note readers and '90s Hip Hop fans know that this union has manifested decades ago. "I’ve been knowing Premier since I got started rapping. We did our first concerts together back in the Celebrity Theater in Anaheim," revealed MC Eiht, who has been releasing material on record since 1986. "[Gang Starr] came to the west coast and their first show, so I’ve been knowing Premier since him and Guru [click to read] was together, since they first started."

Thus far the two have one record together, a 1992 remix. "Every time I go to New York, I kick it with him, we chat, you know, whatever. We used him to do the “Def Wish [II] ” remix on the Music to Driveby record. It’s just a mutual friendship I’ve been having with Premier."

As DJ Premier has since worked with west coast artists like Dilated Peoples, Snoop Dogg [click to read] and Ras Kass, Too Short and MC Eiht were among the first. Eiht recalled to DX how his 1992 "Def Wish II" remix came to be. "At the time, Epic [Records] was based in New York. [That] was their main office, so me going to New York every year doing promo tours and just keeping in contact with Premier. The A&Rs who ran the Rap Department knew that basically, me and Premier had a straight friendship, so they stepped to Premier and asked him to remix the record. I didn’t even have to ask him; they stepped to him and asked him to remix the record because our relationship was based more on friendship than me trying to exploit, you know, ‘Aw man, do a favor for me, do a favor.'" He continued, "We was basically just homies, kicking it, smoking blunts, riding around in his [Mazda] MPV van. That was our thing."

For Compton's Most Wanted, the song only added to their regional acceptance in New York at a time when coastal fences were much taller than today. "As far as New York is concerned, I was one of the very few artists who got respect from a lot of New York cats, so it really just boosted up my credibility with a lot of cats in New York for a nigga like me, you know, ‘This is MC Eiht-gangsta rapper, west coast, strictly gangbanging, drive-bys and shit like that.’ So for me to get with Premier and for him to remix the record, it opened people’s eyes and their ears to the versatility of what Eiht and Compton’s Most Wanted could do as far, as production was concerned. Everybody always thought we had off-the-wall production, but as far as getting one of the hottest producers [too, only built upon that]." Eiht credited some of his peers in that early national movement. "Ice Cube went to the Bomb Squad [click to read], King Tee had Marley [Marl remixes], but it was basically like unheard of, so for Premier to do that for us and to do the 'Def Wish' remix was like, man. It was hot."

Right now though, Eiht remains ever-active in his pursuit of delivering high quality and quantities of music. "Right now, I’m working on finishing up the second mixtape, All-Stars and Straps Vol. 2," said Eiht. "The Warzone project was put on hold for a minute, but we finished it up finally, so we’re waiting for that to see where it’s going to happen," he added of the Snoop Dogg-endorsed group of Eiht, Kam and Goldie Loc. "The Warzone record is a good album and it’s representing the west coast to the fullest and it’s not just sticking on to what people try to stereotype about west coast music, you know, gangbangs, bandanas and all that bullshit. It’s dealing with a lot of issues, as far as females, and what happens to hustling, and what happens to guys when they’re caught up in the system. It’s a versatile album, so I think when people really sink their teeth into it, they’ll be able to get into it real tough."

Before leaving, Eiht also spoke on CMW's status as a group, having worked in three, soon-to-be-four decades. "The status [of the group] is that we still communicate. I’m still in communication with everybody. We’ve worked on songs. It’s like we’ll do two or three songs, and then, I’ll get to doing my stuff, and the other guys will get to doing their stuff, but then, we’ll still have the ambition to come together and put together a project."

He continued, "We’re just waiting for the right time to put the project together, ‘cause like you said, I want it to be in anticipation of something people are going to expect and they’re going to appreciate and they’re not just going to get hauled up in the masses of this singer-talk rapping, [with] no promotion or whatever. Something that people are going to accept and they’re not going to look and go, ‘Aw, these some old cats. They don’t know what they’re talking about,’ because it seems like a lot of cats don’t want to pave the way for the pioneers. But then a lot of these cats nowadays ain’t really talking about nothing. They ain’t informing the youth about nothing. They’ll teach them a dance step or how to wear a chain. That’s where it goes, so Compton’s Most Wanted and Warzone and myself, we try to make songs that are still going to be resourceful to artists and to fans that are going to buy the project. I try to make music to where I’m informing people where it’s going to go, why it’s happening, what it’s going on."

Evidence Says He Has New Deal, New Album

Author: Andres Tardio

Evidence has been calmly bubbling in Los Angeles. His west coast buzz has generated attention with his participation in the Dilated Peoples' discography, but he's also garnered love for his solo material. After releasing The Weatherman LP. Now, he's prepping the release of Cats and Dogs, his latest solo effort. This week, he spoke exlusively with HipHopDX about the new album, his group, The Step Brothers with Alchemist and a label deal that may shock his fans.

When asked if Cats and Dogs would be a follow up, conceptually, to the Weatherman LP, Ev replied that folks shouldn't expect that.

"I don't like sequels," he added. "I like Jaws. I don't like Jaws 2. For the most part, I'm just making something new. I can't do the same record twice. When I made Weatherman, it was based around a lot of dark imagery, the passing of my mom, certain things that I just really had to talk about. Since then, I've experienced a whole lot, though. I really feel like I have something to offer with this album."

The production may just be similar to his latest releases.

"[Alchemist's] done the majority of it, so far. Working with DJ Khalil, Exile, myself, Babu and Sid Roams."

Also, don't expect too many emcees flooding the album. So far, no guests have been added.

"I don't have guests, but in a perfect world, I'd love to have Mos Def and [The] Game on this album."

So, what about the label? He didn't want to elaborate on the deal too much, saying he'd rather not speak on it until it's done. However, he did manage to give us a hint on what record label it may be.

"I'm finishing a deal right now. When you find out who I'm doing it with, it's gonna raise eyebrows. Trust me."

The hint?

"The label is not based out of California or New York."

Fans will have to wait. The album isn't set to hit stores until next year.

"Cats and Dogs is coming out in the first quarter of 2010. Step Brothers will be constantly pushed. It's gonna be out when it's right. In the meantime, there'll be a lot of things to keep you entertained. Trust me."

Pacific Division Talks Album, Mixtape And Internet

uthor: Edwin Ortiz

As Hip Hop has progressed in the last few years, so has the talent at the forefront of its future. DXnext alums Pacific Division [click to read], consisting of Mibbs, BeYoung, and Like, has been a part of this movement, emerging from Palmdale, California with the skills and confidence necessary to make the leap from underground lyricists to regionally-acclaimed artists. Signing a deal with Universal Motown Records last summer, this trio sealed the notion that they were on track to begin a Pacific takeover. HipHopDX got a chance to catch up with the trio, who spoke on their major label debut, performing live, the state of internet Hip Hop, and why they’re competing with The Cool Kids.

While the title by their name says Universal, Pac Div member Mibbs adamantly explained that going to a major record label hasn’t hindered their work ethic. “It’s pretty much the same because our level of work always stays the same. Now it’s just bigger business moves and meeting important people that can change your life everyday all the time. That’s the best part; building relationships and meeting new people. It’s exciting. This is what we’re supposed to be doing with our lives.”

With their Pac Div EP recently released on iTunes, the trio has their energy now focused on two projects; their mixtape Church League Champions and their debut album Grown Kid Syndrome.

Gauging Church League Champions at about 80% done, Mibbs insists the project is much bigger than a “mixtape” title allows. “We would like to call it a body of work, because it’s coming along with videos, and were trying to do some different stuff so people can look at us in a whole different light…The bigger you get in notoriety, the bigger the stuff you have to put out, you know? You can’t be like, ‘the homie picked up the camera and we just started filming.’ Everything has to be quality, and that’s the best thing [for us]. Our level of quality has gotten way bigger. Church League Champions sounds dope as hell. It sounds better than a lot of people’s albums.”

Despite other artists attempt to flood the Internet with music, Pac Div have released records from Church League Champions very sparingly, aware that building a steady fan base shouldn’t equal quantity over quality. “We don’t put too much stuff on the 'net because we want people to appreciate the little bit that we put out so they can get to know it,” Mibbs added.

Switching to Grown Kid Syndrome, Pac Div let DX know that in-house producer Swiff D will act as the official beat smith behind the rhymes. “The only [other] production on Grown Kid Syndrome is Swiff D and DJ Khalil on 'Taste.' But 'Taste' may not make the album because it’s already on the [Pac Div] EP, so it’s gonna be a bonus track. Basically then it’s just Swiff, but that’s one thing the label allowed us to do. We get to do everything how we’ve been doing it,” Mibbs stated.

Currently finishing up a three-show stint with The Roots, Pac Div expressed their gratitude in sharing the same stage with the Philadelphian septet. “It’s a pleasure man; you gotta recognize them for the foundation they laid down. They made it possible for groups like us to even be able to do tours and be welcomed as a rap group people wanna see. They can do shows for the rest of their lives without putting out a new record based off the reputation of doing good shows. To share the stage with them, you gotta tilt your hat to that,” BeYoung said.

Honing their performance skills likewise, he continued, “We figured out how to get people into this energy we got that we create through the music. So every time we come out to a show or put out a new song, it’s that energy that people pick up. We want our music to feel like that energy when you listen to it. It doesn’t feel bogus or corny; it feels like BeYoung, Mibbs and Like.”

While this genuine style has pegged Pac Div as one of the major up-and-coming acts to look out for, Like mentioned his concerns with the overwhelming online presence of artists who aim to get their 15 minutes of fame at the cost of the music. “It’s not only hindered [Hip Hop], but it’s taken away from the authenticity. It’s like when you have too many chefs in the kitchen, or when you have too much of something. Somebody told me, ‘Do everything in moderation,’ because once you start to over-saturate things, it loses its appeal…People don’t even know the difference between what’s good and what’s not good.”

Continuing, Like explained that Pac Div arrived at their current position through paid dues and honest music. “We didn’t come up off the Internet. We earned our stripes rapping at the Wake Up show with Sway and Tech, with very harsh critics. We worked really hard, doing shows with everyone from Ludacris to The Roots to Nas; that right there, you can’t create that from the Internet. Everything that people are beginning to see bubble has definitely been off the strength of word of mouth. It’s a pure, organic and non-generic movement that we’re doing, solely off of our passion for music.”

With various beat contributions from a wide array of west coast producers, it was only fitting that Pac Div received some love from Jake One, who reportedly has the group in competition for a particular beat in his catalog. “[Jake One] has this one beat we fighting over with The Cool Kids for that uses the [Zapp] ‘Computer Love’ sample. He played it for me in L.A, at the Red Bull studio, and me and Swiff were wildin’ like, 'oh my god, we need that,’” Like said.
Sending out a PSA announcement to the Seattle producer, Pac Div pleaded, “Jake, we’re still trying to work out how we want to do that joint, but please, don’t sell it yet!”

Pacific Division’s Church League Champions will be dropping soon as a precursor to their debut album Grown Kid Syndrome, which is scheduled for release in the fall.

Jay-Z, T-Pain Assist Fat Boys' Kool Rock on New LP

By Ismael AbduSalaam

Kool Rock, formerly Kool Rock-Ski of 80’s pioneer group The Fat Boys, will step out on his own tomorrow with an all star, 4-track EP entitled Party Time.

Years away from the limelight hasn’t dimmed Kool Rock’s respect in the eyes of his Hip-Hop colleagues.

For the first single “We Can Talk,” the veteran rapper was able to obtain the services of superstar Jay-Z.

Both emcees enjoyed bridging the gaps between their eras, and Rock made note of Jay’s appreciated namedrop of the group on his seminal Blueprint album.

“Man, you know it was like two decades since I been in the game. To get in the studio and do a track with Jay-Z on it was a great feeling man,” Kool Rock told AllHipHop.com in an exclusive interview. “That's right, me and Jay was laughing about his line ‘First the Fat Boys break-up’ [from the track ‘Heart of the City‘] and he was really happy to see we back [again]!”

Another surprise guest was in-demand songwriter T-Pain.

Acknowledging his elder statesman status, Rock is amazed at how far the music has progressed since The Fat Boys’s self-titled 1984 debut.

“T-Pain is a trip man, I think he was in diapers when my first record went platinum [laughing] and here I am, a grown ass man, learning from him!” Kool Rock exclaimed to AllHipHop.com. “My single [with T-Pain] is called ‘Stop Playing With Yourself.’ [It’s] one of those jams that just gets stuck in your head. As a matter of fact, I bet it will be a strip club anthem in a minute. ‘Stop Playing With Yourself,’ get your hands out your pants [laughing] you nah mean?”

In 1995, original member Buff Love passed away of a massive heart attack at the age of 28.

Since then, surviving members Prince Markie Dee and Kool Rock have made concerted efforts to watch their weights while retaining the flair the Fat Boys were known for.

And with the duo launching a comeback last year through http://www.originalfatboys.com, Kool Rock is excited about introducing the group to a new generation of fans.

“This release is my bread and butter right now,” Kool Rock stated. “The industry that we [The Fat Boys] helped forge has grown and as I hit my 40s I'm having the time of my life, I'm grown and sexy. I'm 175 pounds, I am in incredible shape; I got a 6-pack ladies! No pun intended, but I gotta eat now, it's been a long time, [legally] download my album!”

Kool Rock’s Party Time EP debuts tomorrow (April 14) on iTunes.
