King Myers Discusses Upcoming Debut LP "Kingology," Working With Rakim
by Homer Johnsen
Today, King Myers has just put the finishing touches on his debut LP, Kingology, due in stores on November 2. The album features veteran emcees like Rakim and Bumpy Knuckles, as well as Fred The Godson. The album boasts a wide range of beats, ranging from classic breakbeats to slow-tempo, chopped-and-screwed tracks. “I want everything to have a completely different sound, and that’s what I was trying to do with the album,” said Myers, during a recent phone interview with HipHopDX. “I wanted to make sure it was very diverse so all people could feel it.”
During the interview, Myers’ drive for success became notable quickly. He’s a very mature teenager, and he’s realistic about his prospects going forward. “Right now, basically I wanted to focus on getting my respect first rather than coming up in hype,” says Myers. The Bumpy Knuckles apprentice

Most

Skyzoo Set to Release His Acclaimed Album “A Dream Deferred”; Explains Split from 9th Wonder’s Jamla Records
by Ron Johnson
Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn MC Skyzoo is releasing his Langston Hughes title-inspired album, A Dream Deferred, next Tuesday (October 2), through his own Duck Down Music-distributed label, The Faculty.
Named after legendary Harlem Renaissance poet Hughes’ poem of the same name, Skyzoo’s fourth album uses a more diverse variety of features compared to his 2009 debut, The Salvation, boasting appearances from Jill Scott, Freeway, Raheem Devaughn, and Talib Kweli.
“I feel like a lot of people are at a point where they know what it is that they want, and they have this dream that they’re going towards. But what happens when things don’t go the way you thought it would?” Skyzoo recently told AllHipHop.com in his thick, New York bravado.
“The closer you get to it, the more you realize it’s nothing like you thought it would be. What happens then? I think that’s what that poem meant, and that’s what I wanted the album to be about,” Skyzoo added.
As an avid fan of the Jazz sound that filled the Harlem air during Hughes’ time, Skyzoo described the incorporation of live Jazz instruments and string sections that producers like DJ Khalil and co-executive producer !llmind brought to the project.
“It stays true to the root of what people know me for rhyming over. Dirty drums, good baselines, and that core feeling. But it’s not sample heavy,” said the lyrical story-teller. “It’s a bigger sound. More lush. We had people come in and play stuff. We arranged it, wrote music pieces for it. I wanted it to sound like a dream.”
Grammy winning producer 9th Wonder’s trademark presence is not as strong on the upcoming album as on Skyzoo’s debut album, The Salvation, which was released on 9th Wonder’s Jamla imprint. Although the North Carolina producer lends to the album’s first single, “Jansport Springs (One-Time for Chi-Ali),” Skyzoo claims that for the majority of A Dream Deferred, he wanted to stray away from the sample-heavy beats which permeate 9th Wonder’s signature sound.

Rock The Vote Bus to Stop in Philly on Voter Registration Day; Talib Kweli and Dice Raw of The Roots Set To Perform
by Seandra Sims
Tomorrow (September 25) is National Voter Registration Day, and organizations across the country have planned rallies, voter registration drives, and other events to encourage voting in the 2012 Election.
One of the leading artist-supported, voter engagement movements among young people in the past few elections has been Rock The Vote, and their previous “Road Trips” have helped to register thousands of Americans in preparation for casting their ballots in November.
Key among those who lead election efforts are opportunities to help educate people about voter ID laws and registration practices, especially in swing states such as Pennsylvania, where the number of Electoral College votes can have a significant impact on overall election results.
To that end, Rock The Vote will bring its bus to the Community College of Philadelphia on Tuesday, September 25 from 12-4PM to celebrate voting rights and offer on-location registration for students and the general public.
Rock The Vote won’t be all engagement-based, however. Organizers plan to “unfold” the bus during the afternoon for a special concert featuring Brooklyn rapper Talib Kweli, along with Philly hometown artist and Roots collaborator, Dice Raw and his Raw Life label family.
Also set to appear are Miss USA Olivia Culpo and DJ Jeffrey Tonnesen.
The event is open to the general public, and details are as follows: Rock The Vote Philly, Tuesday, September 25, 12-4PM, Community College of Philadelphia, 1700 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA.

Lupe Fiasco Says Second Disc Of "Food & Liquor 2" Will Drop After Christmas
by Sean Ryon
Lupe Fiasco reveals that the second disc to "Food & Liquor 2" will drop after Christmas.
This September 25, Lupe Fiasco will release his long-awaited Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1. Now, in a recent interview with Australia's Music Feeds TV, the Chicago rapper gives an update on the second part of the forthcoming album.
Lupe said that that Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 2 should be coming out sometime after Christmas. He said initially, he wanted to release both LPs as a double CD project, but that his label wouldn't go along with the plan.
"I originally wanted to do a double CD, and we were gonna put it out on Christmas," he said. "But the label didn't want to participate in that, so we'll do a part one and a part two, put the part one out earlier than Christmas, and the part two after Christmas."
Lupe also explained that the inspiration behind the all-black album cover to the first part of Food & Liquor 2. He explained that the decision to make an completely blank album was that he simply wanted to push the limits of his label Atlantic Records. Still, although he wanted to give Atlantic a hard time, he made sure to never sacrifice the quality of his music.
"The entire album is black - there's no pictures and words in the album," he said. "[The inspiration] was more - can I get the label to do that? Can I make that happen? Can I say, 'Hey, I don't want to put anything in the album and I want to make that happen?' It was like a challenge almost, and I had to go through some legal battles and some wrangling back and forth, so it wasn't as easy as I thought to put nothing in there. It was like one of the hardest albums that I had to do with putting nothing in it."
He added, "[My relationship with Atlantic Records] is coming to a close, but we're definitely going out strong and we're definitely going out with good music. I'm definitely not going to cheat the fans or short-change myself or short-change my art for the sake of pissing my label off. It's almost like I'm not even thinking about it; it's just kinda like, 'Let's do the rest of these albums we have together and then off into the sunset."

Double A.B. & Dub Sonata Discuss "Media Shower," Working With Sean Price
by Homer Johnsen
The veteran rhyme and production pair talks about their first truly joint album, and working with Man Bites Dog Records, Scram Jones and Roc Marciano.
Since 2003, Double A.B. and Dub Sonata have been making music. Now, almost 10 years later, they are ready to give the best of their work to the general public. Media Shower, which released earlier this week - featuring appearances from Sean Price, Evidence and Rhymefest, among others.
The two first got acquainted at the State University of New York at Purchase in Upstate New York. There, they were deeply involved in the cooperative effort, Atoms Family which included Cannibal Ox and Hangar 18. They took separate paths when Double A.B. began battle rapping through popular media outlets like MTV. Dub Sonata stayed busy too, producing for artists like Dom Pachino, C-Rayz Walz and Sadat X. Eventually, the two were reacquainted decided to collaborate for an album.
The album is essentially a compilation of Double A.B. and Dub Sonata’s finest unreleased work, ranging over a course of 10 years. “A lot of these songs came together over many years…And this is kind of just a body of the best of our work,” said Dub Sonata during the duo’s recent phone interview with HipHopDX.
Both of the artists touched on a number of topics, including their previous work, working with new, veteran emcees, and their lessons learned under the guidance of producer/songwriter, Scram Jones.
HipHopDX: When did you two first get acquainted?
Double A.B.: We got cool probably around [the] late ‘90s, early 2000s. We both went to school together [in] upstate New York. We both from the city, but we both went to school upstate, to S.U.N.Y. New Paltz. I remember they had a poppin’ little scene up there. Like real Hip Hop scene, a lot of- Atoms Family, whose crew members eventually became Cannibal Ox, and Hangar 18, and you know, different Rap groups spawned out of there. That’s basically where we first ran into each other.
DX: Your new album is called Media Shower. What’s the significance of that title?
Double A.B.: The title basically is- we have a song called “Media Shower” featuring Rhymefest, that’s the title track for the album. That’s basically just saying how the current state of society is just: the next gadget to the next gadget. Everybody walks around with their face in the screen, looking at the next YouTube post. It’s basically a statement to that; how we’re bombarded with different types of media be it music, movies, television, YouTube.
DX: I hear that. What was the creative process like?
Dub Sonata: We’ve been working together for about 10 years or more, so we kind of just work fast and naturally. A lot of these songs came together over many years, adding different elements and arranging. And this is kind of just a body of the best of our work that would work as an album.
DX: How long is the [time range] of material, would you say?
Dub Sonata: Well, a couple of the songs probably go back to like ’03, right A.B.? Like “Drug Wars”?
Double A.B.: Yeah, one song is the old song that we kind of re-did. But besides that, I’d say most of the songs are in the last two to three years, and then maybe as far back as five for some of them. But yeah, like you said, some of them go back a long time.

Immortal Technique Compares Being Signed To A Major Label To Being In An Abusive Relationship
by Danielle Harling
Immortal Technique expresses his distaste for major labels, says he has two EP's in the work with two underground Hip Hop legends.
Harlem rapper Immortal Technique has never been one to hold back when it comes to the debate between remaining independent and being signed to a major label, and during an interview with Hard Knock TV the noted emcee offered up quite the interesting analogy.
While speaking on his documentary, The (R)evolution of Immortal Technique, Immortal Technique compared being signed to a major label to being in a relationship with an abusive, rich man.
“It’s like a woman that wants to marry an abusive rich man because she figures she can take the ass-whooping for a few years and get some money from the divorce,” said Immortal Technique in a video posted on 2DopeBoyz. “That’s just the ass backwards way to think to me. I’ve always told people that independent was the way to go. I’ve always pushed that message and I think that the movie is a big part of that. Saying ‘Look, if I was signed to a major label this couldn’t happen.’ They don’t want me. They don’t want the real thing. They want what looks like the real thing because the real thing would tell them something about themselves.”
Although fans are still eagerly awaiting the release of Middle Passage, the rapper revealed that on top of that album he also has two EP’s in the work with artists he referred to as “underground legends.”
“Middle Passage and I’m working on two EP’s along with some other people. Famous underground legends and it’s gonna be big news. I can’t announce it yet but it’s gonna be some real big shit,” Immortal Technique explained. “It’s not just the Middle Passage coming, I got two [little] records coming after that and it’s gonna be amazing yo. It’s gonna be real big for the underground, real big for independent music. And this year and the following years are all about building together for me.”
Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..." Purple Tape Limited Edition Cassette Sold Out
by Jake Paine
Matt Welch of Get On Down Records reveals to HipHopDX how the label sold out of the 1,000 limited edition box sets in less than 48 hours at retail.
For over 17 years, one cassette tape in Hip Hop has received a mythology all of its own. There is a reason that Chef Raekwon's Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... is more commonly referred to as "The Purple Tape" no matter its format. The August 1995 Loud/RCA Records release was originally released to cassette in a distinct purple plastic that made the packaging as unique as its game-changing musical contents. Like color-specific caps on crack viles which sales inspired many of the Wu-Tang Clan emcee's rhymes at the time, the product was one of a kind, and stood out from the basic.
In the years since, The Purple Tape has been one of Hip Hop's most coveted pieces of memoribilia. It signifies a veteran purist fan from a bygone time in the music listening experience. Original tapes commonly drawn three figures on eBay as Rae even partnered with Fat Beats to release the vinyl version of his 2009 Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...Pt. II on purple wax.
This week, Boston, Massachusetts-based Get On Down Records has partnered with Sony to re-release The Purple Tape in its original format. Expanded liner notes with Rae, 1,000 hand-made lacquer display cases, and additional throwback promotional goodies are available for the cool price of $44.95.
"The future of being a good distributor is broadening your base," says Get On Down's Matt Welch, about making a product that will be sold in sneaker and fashion boutiques as well as in mom-and-pop record stores. Matt is leader in the small crew of culture curators (also including former Scratch editor/journalist Brian Coleman) who have previously liberated fan-inspired releases from Ghostface Killah, The Pharcyde, Tom Scott & The L.A. Dreamers and Common. Welch, a veteran decision-maker at both Landspeed Records and later Traffic Entertainment, explains what goes on behind the scenes to liberate the cool, and shifting the paradigm back to physical products in the digital age. On Friday (September 14) HipHopDX spoke at length with Matt about the G.O.D. operation and the color purple.

Xzibit Previews New Album “Napalm” Featuring Dr. Dre, Game, Wiz Khalifa, Alkaholiks and More
by Jake Crates
AllHipHop.com sat with Xzibit yesterday (September 14) in his studio in Los Angeles, to get an exclusive listen to his new project Napalm.
The album is Inspired by trips to United States bases in Iraq.
Xzibit gives fans 18-tracks that convey the raw emotion of the war that United States troops endure on a daily basis, while living in a combat zone.
The project also pulls together a host of features that X acquired over the course of a year and a half of recording.
While at the listening session Xzibit told stories of how the threat of violence was real when he was visiting Iraq.
From the threat of getting sniped in a helicopter, to dodging RPGs, the rapper saw what it was like to be in a real war zone, while touring nine bases in five different cities throughout Iraq.
“The response was dope, we were on the base that had Iraq and U.S. soldiers. Someone was screaming, ‘Concentrate,’ I could hear people were requesting my songs,” Xzibit told AllHipHop.com of his tour.
Xzibit was so inspired by the trip that he even included actual members of the United States Armed services in the song “Meaning of Life,” as Xzibit called on retired Staff Sgt. Shilo Harris to speak on the song.
The lead single on the project is titled “Up Out the Way” featuring E-40, while Xzibit’s son Tre Capital, who is now 17, is featured on Napalm also.
The album also features the introspective and emotional “1983″ that features Xzibit’s late mother and “Enjoy the Night” which features Wiz Khalifa and is produced by and featuring David Banner.
Dr. Dre also makes an appearance on the project, as X joins forces with Tha Alkaholiks and King T for the track “Louis XIII”
“The lyricists of the West Coast, we take our shit very personal we got myself, Game, Crooked I, and Slim the Mobster,” Xzibit said of the West Coast inspired anthem “Movies.”
Next Friday, Xzibit hosts his birthday party with Power 106 in Los Angeles.

New Tupac Documents; Website Slated To Hit the Internet, Twitter In Honor Of Rapper’s Death
by Grouchy Greg Watkins
Investigative journalist Chuck Philips is launching a new website today (September 13), that will focus on the unsolved murders of the Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.
Beginning today, Philips will use Twitter to promote an exclusive 1,200 word news story, which will be published on his new site and released via Twitter, 140 characters at a time.
According to a press release issued to media outlets, the first story will focus on Sean “Diddy” Combs and his relationship with late Harlem drug dealer Eric “Von Zip” Martin.
Zip was a New York legend who passed away last month. His funeral in Harlem drew a large procession, complete with a horse-drawn carriage, that carried his casket through the streets of Harlem.
Eric "Von ZIp" Martin
Eric “Von ZIp” Martin
Artists like Jae Millz, Lil Kim, and Cam’ron attended services for Zip, while Diddy himself offered up words during a memorial service.
According to Philips, as well as several other published reports, Zip was the connection to Sean Combs and the Compton Southside Crips.
The gang allegedly provided security for Bad Boy Entertainment during a violent feud with Death Row Records throughout the late 1990s.
Tupac was shot on September 6, 1996, and he died seven days later, on September 13.
Police believe the shooter was Orlando Anderson, with whom Tupac had a physical confrontation with, inside the Las Vegas MGM Grand, just hours before he was killed.
According to multiple sources, Zip had a previously established relationship with the Southside Crips, who allegedly sent heroin to Harlem and other drugs to Harlem via the street figure, who had ties that stretched back to Frank Lucas and Ellsworth “Bumpy” Johnson.
In fact, Zip’s restaurant “ZIP Code” hosted the book release party for Bumpy Johnson’s 93-year-old widow, Mayme, when she released her book, Harlem Godfather, in 2008.
Chuck Philips is planning an article that will focus on the relationship between Zip and Sean “Diddy” Combs and any possible connection to Tupac’s death.
According to multiple reports, including police investigations, it was Zip who introduced Diddy to a man named “Keefe D.,” a Southside Crips shot caller, who allegedly admitted to police that he helped orchestrate Tupac’s murder.

The website where the documents in the article will be published is ChuckPhilipsPost.com.

ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul & Jay Rock Confirm That A Black Hippy Album Will Not Be Released
by Danielle Harling
The Black Hippy's confirm Ab-Soul's previous statement that a Black Hippy album will "never, ever" be released.
For those who may have had a little hope when it comes to a possible Black Hippy album being released, ScHoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock likely dashed those hopes during their interview with Page31.com. While being interviewed each of the three rappers was asked if a joint Black Hippy album will ever surface and all three responded with a swift no.
According to ScHoolboy Q, at this time in their careers a Black Hippy album won’t work because of the current emphasis on individual projects.
“It’s not,” said ScHoolboy Q when asked if a Black Hippy album will be released. “Like why [do] nigga’s want a Black Hippy album? It’s so corny. Why you want the hardest nigga’s to do an album? Why we can’t just do our own shit? Why ya’ll want all of us to do it? It’ll never come out right. When the hardest nigga’s always get together it never come out right. That’s how I feel. We the hardest nigga’s, but I just don’t feel it’ll come out right. At least right now.”
“It won’t. I don’t know man…I don’t think it’ll ever be a Black Hippy album,” Jay Rock added.
ScHoolboy Q did add a small glimmer of hope when he revealed that while a Black Hippy album won’t happen now, they may be able to work something out in the future.
“I think maybe later on when we a little older, right now we cool. We too stuck onto our own shit,” said Q in a video posted on HipHop-n-More.

Crooked I Says "Fuck The Radio," Explains Reasoning
by Steven J. Horowitz
Crooked I explains that Hip Hop culture needs the radio, but that he doesn't get any airplay.
Crooked I has some vicious words for radio. During an interview with ThisIs50.com's Jack Thriller, the Slaughterhouse member said that Hip Hop culture needs the medium, but that he doesn't get any airplay and has some harsh feelings about it.
Crook said that Thriller should have his own radio show, but that radio is too afraid of having "real" personalities on the air. "They scared that you gon’ say some real shit that’s gonna be funny as a motherfucker. Same thing with the Rap shit. Nigga, we don’t get a whole bunch of radio play. I don’t get a whole bunch of radio play. Nigga, honestly, fuck the radio. We need it, but we don’t get it. So fuck ‘em," he said.
He continued by explaining how radio is valuable to Hip Hop, but that artists such as himself don't get any love from it. "I think you need the radio. But I’m a lucky ass niga. I’m finna do House of Blues, boom. I got a song out, radio don’t play it. But at the same time, I don’t care about none of that shit. I don’t give a fuck. I don’t think they’ve seen a nigga like me since N.W.A., to be honest with you, because I be thinkin’ like, who, who, who, who? What nigga can go without radio, can go without any of this shit and be right here shooting videos with Interscope and Jimmy Iovine and Paul Rosenberg over there? What nigga can do that? I got a new campaign: regular nigga.”
The Wrecking Crew "Wu-Tang Pulp" Mixtape Stream
by Jake Paine
Has-Lo, Zilla Rocca and Curly Castro deliver of a Philadelphia homage to Shaolin in this highly-conceptual tribute to Wu-Tang Clan.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based Hip Hop group The Wrecking Crew just released their first full-length project, Wu-Tang Pulp. The free effort by DXnext alum emcee/producer Has-Lo, emcee/producer Zilla Rocca and emcee Curly Castro is an homage to the Wu-Tang Clan, with the trio reconfiguring the production and verses to selected cuts from the '90s icons' catalog.
Zilla wrote of Wu-Tang Pulp, "What started as a simple idea in 2009 has formed into a completely flushed out re-imagining of the most iconic collective in Hip Hop history. Wu-Tang Pulp is an album shaped from the hearts and minds of three die-hard killa bee fanatics who spared no details in paying the ultimate homage to their heroes. Tackling records from RZA, Ghostface, Method Man, etc. is no easy task when you grew up with 36 Chambers in your Walkman, drawing the "W" on your high school composition books, and rocking Tommy Hilfiger tees in the summer because Raekwon said so."
Last year, Doomtree member Cecil Otter and Swiss Andy gained some mainstream notoriety for his Wu-Tang Clan mash-up with band Fugazi,13 Chambers (as Wugazi).
